Ahhaaa. Many villains to select from. Eager for the Ball. I just bet Clark dresses up nice. Don't like either Linda or Lana, but we must have villains.

Four years to write?! Wow! That's amazing!

He’s currently working for the Metropolis Museum specializing in French history specifically Napoleon Bonaparte, you know, the short man who became Emperor of France?

As a Napoleon fan and history teacher, I must object to this. Napoleon was 5 foot 6 inches, which was average height for a man of his time.

Quote
Right now, we are working on creating an exhibit depicting Napoleon’s base camp at Waterloo

Technically *near* Waterloo wink
Napoleon's Last Headquarters

Vive l'empereur! laugh

So, they're both taking things very slowly. Six months in this part, giving time for their working relationship to evolve, and six months to allow Daae and his conspirators to work through their plan. Lana's possessiveness has the effect of tempering any thoughts of a personal relationship - Clark is immediately marked as off limits to Lois. I like that she acknowledges Clark's attractive qualities, and that her mind is processing the odd connection between his arrival and a drop in the city's crime stats. We didn't get Clark's perspective on this time period, though - how he's feeling now that he has met and worked closely with Lois, and how he's feeling about Lana right now. He defends her outwardly as "not possessive", and yet he can't be oblivious to her marking of her territory.

I'm just really drawn in to this world you've created, and am definitely looking forward to the next part. thumbsup

The first Duke of Wellington was about 5 ft. 10 inches, but he was very thin and slender and stooped a lot, so he appeared shorter.
I took Lana's comment as another reason to put down someone who was famous. Actually the rep for Napoleon's supposed short height was due British propaganda that still holds sway today. I was in London for the 200 anniversary memorial of the Battle of Waterloo. One of the things mentioned there was that Napoleon's map of the battlefield was incorrect and that the British forces were not where the French thought they were. Also it was just the British Napoleon was up against, it was the Kaiser too.
Great story though with many many villains. Looking forward to more.

The persistent myth about Napoleon's height really demonstrates the power of propaganda! Waterloo was a muddy mess that could have turned out so differently without the rain, or without the terrain, or if it had started earlier...I'm sure Napoleon played the "what if" game over and over as he sat on St. Helena for the rest of his days!

All the more reason that Clark needs to kick Lana to the curb and sweep Lois into his arms! laugh But I suspect that may happen a little later in the story. wink

Susan, whose defense of the emperor has little to do with the story and much to do with the fact that she so rarely gets to discuss him without bored 8th graders rolling their eyes at her. lol

There are a many villains in this story, all of whom will have an impact on Lois and Clark.

Lana is not a likable person, her character is drawn totally from the series. The actress did a good job presenting her as rather domineering and possessive of Clark. Here Lana's personality is more rounded, yet still difficult.

Yup. The rough draft was started in July of 2012. It took that long to create this world while writing my other stories. So many drafts and edits along the way and I'm still making changes to the final draft. Whew! dizzy Without the assistance (and persistence) of my betas, it is unlikely the story would have ever seen the light of day.

To pull off the kind of stunt Daae and company are planning does take time, especially since EVERYTHING they are doing is illegal. sad

I want Lois and Clark to work together as a team and get to know one another better. There is a definite attraction there, but Lois has been badly burned in the past, that and the fact that Clark is in a committed relationship already is holding her in check.

There is another reason which won't be revealed for awhile yet.

As for Clark? Oh he is aware of his partner and that will become evident eventually. whistle

I am learning a lot more about the French Emperor and the first Duke of Wellington. Lana's comment was a combination of my belief that Napoleon was short and her desire to put him down. I love this kind of back and forth discussion between readers in the feedback threads! This is what we writers live for!

Now I better make sure my research on Napoleon is airtight! Groobie keep pointing out any errors I make! thumbsup

I like that you've given Lois and Clark a good six months to work together. Things aren't 'new' between them--by now they'd be fairly used to each other, comfortable around each other, settled into working as partners. The fact that they have been in each other's lives a bit, witnessed day-to-day stuff, I think adds more to them becoming close and (hopefully wink ) falling for each other. There's more 'history' between them and more for them to gain from each other.

Lana...wow. You've made her equally as easy to cringe at as in the series smile. Great job! She is just so perfectly annoying and stuck up. Clark, come to your senses ASAP!

I am very much looking forward to the Ball. I can only imagine how handsome Clark will be when he shows up. And this Lois acknowledges the attraction, so she's sure to be swept off her feet. Can not wait!

Awesome!

Yes! clap I have never been the writer who has Lois and Clark fall madly in love with each other at first sight. In the series, the expression on Clark's face when he sees Lois for the first time is one of attraction, but not of falling deeply in love. Being in love happens over time. As you mentioned they have a history together. In this universe Lois is not thrown off balance by her relationship and engagement to Lex. This way they get to spend time together as co-workers which will gradually lead them to something more.

“Oh my…,” she whispered reverently. “Hubba. Hubba.”
This Lois knows what she's looking at. Too bad Lana's in the picture.

He smiled graciously and tore the blue wrapping off, then opened the box which held a large gold picture frame containing a color photo of Lana, her left hand touching her face and on the ring finger was Clark’s college ring. He looked down at her and she grinned happily.
Lana is definitely marking her territory.

Quote
After one such mishap, followed by her partner’s disappearance, Lois mused about him, <He’s around when things happen, than he’s not around when they happen. Maybe he’s the one that makes them ‘unhappen’?> Lois chuckled. <Where did *that* thought come from? I must be going crazy, how could a guy like Kansas be anything but a mild-mannered reporter from the Midwest?> Nonetheless the odd occurrences continued and Lois’ intuition worked subconsciously to make sense of the matter.
Keep going, Lois ... you're getting warmer.

Quote
Clark stared hard at her, the tone of his voice steely, “Lana is not possessive.”
If Lana were any more possessive, she'd put Clark on a leash.

The man on the other line spoke softly, as if he did not wish to overhear. “This is not about a job interview. Perhaps we should meet; my colleagues and I have a fascinating story to tell …”
Hmm ... is this about Daae? Lana? Luthor? Clark's extracurricular activities?

“Good Day Monsieur Templar. I trust you have enjoyed the perks of our association?”

Jasper Templar stood by a bookshelf looking over the leather bound classics such as Moby Dick, by Melville, Tale of Two Cities, by Dickens and War of the Worlds, by H.G. Wells. He angrily grimaced at the last volume than turned and smiled at his employer.
Tempus?

For a brief moment he was a younger man, happily in love, but all too soon the blissful memories were overcome by distressing ones of her decision to marry Lex instead of himself. He spoke aloud with a voice so filled with anguish and hurt no one would have recognized it as the voice of Gregory Daae. “No Arianna, you wounded my spirit a long time ago. Only a fool would allow something like that to come about again. Our ship has sailed once and for all.” He sighed sadly and departed for his townhouse in order to prepare for the ball.
A brief moment of humanity for Daae!

I'm enjoying this story.

"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

Years ago Janet Owens used that phase to describe Clark. So glad to use it here! smile1 Lois openly appreciates a very handsome man. Even if he is with Lana, who is most definitely possessive and marking her territory. She is perfectly well aware of how handsome her boyfriend is and has determined not to let anyone sink their claws ...uh ... nails into him.

Clark is still a reporter and one who by this time is developing a good reputation for honest reporting in Metropolis. Tipsters and other folk call him all the time about things brewing in the Big Apricot! All will be revealed in time ... smile

Well Lois finally returns to find that she has a new partner. While showing the typical Lois annoyance at having not been consulted on this action however she did quickly adjust to the situation by grabbing Clark to go to the White Orchid Ball with her. This Clark will have to put his foot down soon as Lois will run all over him until he does.

Hello Mike and FoLCs!

I have been on vacation, away from Internet and WiFi. Returning home today. Thank you for all the kind comments! New parts will be up soon!

Yes, she has returned to Metropolis to find a few changes in the bullpen, some most definitely not to her liking. But like a cat, Miss Lane lands on her feet with grace and like it or not Clark is in her orbit. More to come! jump

“Oh my…,” she whispered reverently. “Hubba. Hubba.”

Catherine Grant came over to her side and said sotto voce, “Down girl. He’s got a keeper.”

Lois was about to ask who, when she noticed a petite blonde with shrewd blue eyes pop out the elevator and take the hunk’s hand. She seemed to be reminding him of something very important. Her pointed tone of voice and body language gave off a definite aura of ‘Keep Off, He’s Mine.’

<Keeper indeed,> Lois thought with a mental sigh. <She must be the girlfriend.>

Okay, can I just say I really love the Lois / Cat friendship going on. I love that they're not over there trying to claw each other's eyes out but rather being supportive of one another. You see this so much in the workplace... Like don't you have enough issues in the workplace without turning on one another. Okay jumping off my soapbox.

And the hubba hubba comment lol

Clearly Kent let his girlfriend walk all over him. Great, so much for the Hotshot journalist.

Yeah I'm with Lois. Stop letting Lana walk all over you Clark!

“Isn’t it just perfect?” Before he could answer she looked at her watch and said, “It’s getting late, I need to get to work.” She started to walk away and added, “Don’t forget, on the steps of the museum at 6:00pm sharp. You know how Daddy hates to wait.”

Marking her territory I see...

“Hey Clark… Do you have a tuxedo?”

Clark looked up suspiciously and responded, “No. But renting one shouldn’t be a problem. Why?”

Lois rolled her eyes impatiently. “Tomorrow night Lex and Arianna Luthor are hosting their annual White Orchid Ball. It’s only the biggest social event in Metropolis second only to the Metropolis museum’s costume exhibit gala. Daily Planet reporters always cover it.”

“My usual date for these things, Mitchell Samuels, has another one of his ‘colds’. I need an escort and since you work for the Planet you might as well come along.”

“Escort? But … but what about Lana? Does she get an invitation?” Clark asked.

Well, that's rude.

'Hey I've got tickets to this event. Wanna go?'

'Can I bring my girlfriend?'

Maybe it *was* time to update his wardrobe.

He did need to look more the part of a seasoned professional, not a world tramping hobo. Even though being a slave to fashion was not his style, it might be better to have at least a couple of new suits and casual outfits in his closet and definitely a new pair of shoes. The ones he had on were polished and well maintained, yet they had a lot of mileage on them and regrettably, it showed.

How had he not updated his wardrobe and Ms. Queen of Sheba not said/done anything? I mean she has to be seen with him right?
