Wow, this is a much better recption than I was expecting! (See thread on writer insecurity...
)
The whole story seemed like a silly cobbled-together nonsensical mess. It did improve a bit when I went back over it one last time before posting (unusual for me -- I generally can't edit my own work), but I still didn't think much of it.
So, the reactions I did get were a real surprise. Thanks to everyone who posted! I really appreciate it!

Of course, now I will have that Beatles song stuck in my head all night...
Yeah, I grew up on the Beatles. Of course, the song reference was just a last-second addition. The song
I've had stuck in my head is very different, and it doesn't help that it only exists in my head.
(I do that. I don't know why. I walk around, I see something, I adapt a song to it, and then I get that song stuck in my head. Every time Mom and I go through VA, I get a song in my head. "If I were in Richmod, de-dee-del-dee-del-dum, all day long I'd biddy-biddy-bum, if I were a Vir-gin-ian! ...")
So far, the song goes like this:
All the sands are brown,
and the seas are grey.
I went for a swim,
on a winter's day.
I'd be safe and warm,
if I was in the bay.
Calamari dreamin'
on such a winter's day!
I stopped by an old reef,
I passed along the way.
I got down on the beach
and I pretend to sway.
Oh, the moray likes the salt,
he knows I'm not gonna stay.
Calamari Dreamin'
on such a winter's day...
Unfortunately, that also reminds me of another song, which goes:
When an eel
is in the sea,
living near
a coral reef,
that's a moray,
that's a moray!
<sigh> You see what I have to live with?
But tell me, was this a coincidence? Where did you find out my *other* alter-ego? I don't remember mentioning it... or did I?
The URL in your sig was already pointed out, so I guess I don't need to explain that. Darn, I was kinda looking forward to it...
(Sorry, Kae. Hope you don't mind me using your personal graemlin...
)
Sara - Thanks for the great comments, here and on IRC! (I really should get on IRC more often...).
Since I don't want to keep repeating myself, I'll limit myself to one more time. Thanks again to QoTC, Sara, Jose, Ethnica, Anna, Laura, Tipiwoman, and Tricia for all your wonderful comments.
