So today I had this idea... It comes from something the surrealists used to do together. They'd gather a gang of people together and play surrealist games that included writing and artistic exercises, all collaborative and all very random. They came up with all kinds of crazy/funny/dreamlike pieces. I thought it might be fun to try a Lois & Clark one here. So this is the deal--I'd like to facilitate a Surrealist Challenge here. For those that want to participate, this is how it will go: * Comment here that you're "in" * I will e-mail you two lines of dialogue. Here's an example: Your story starts with: "What are you talking about, Lois? That's crazy!" Clark exclaimed. Your story ends with: "Clark, what happened to your umbrella?" Lois asked hurriedly. * For the sake of this exercise, the only 2 characters will be Lois and Clark. * You will write what's "in between" the 2 lines of dialogue I've given you. I'd say a good length would be 1-2 pages (or even less; could be just a few paragraphs). Your part is NOT going to be a complete story. Far from it. But, what you should do as a writer is establish a bit of a scenario and an environment (Where they are, what they're doing). * You must begin and end with the given lines of dialogue. Don't write further after your "end" line. Yes, I realize your story will not be finished! * You will then email your part to me. * I will assemble the parts together of everyone who participates. They will become one, big (probably hilarious) crazy story! --Why?-- You ask? * Because YOUR last line is somebody else's FIRST line! * So, we'll have several different premises, and the only link will be the transitions in the dialogue! I think it will be fun! Who's in? And... do you need more explanation? Does this make sense?? --Wanda

Oooh, a page! I can do that! I think it makes sense. Let's say you end on the umbrella line, and that's my starting line...my piece won't follow yours content-wise...? We'll just be writing at the same time, and when we put our pieces together, it'll be a craze-fest? JD

YES! Exactly!!! And remember that everyone will take it into different contexts. so, yes, craze-fest 2004! I take it you're interested? I'm sending you some quotes. There is no limit as to how many people I can add onto this thing! Any other takers? --WD

I'm in. I shouldn't be at this time of the year, but I can't resist. One question: do the authors know anything at all about the story as a whole -- particularly the time it takes place, and all the ramifications thereof (does Lois know, are L&C married, etc.) -- or will we just have to accept changes that way along with everything else? Now why do I suddenly remember the surrealist light-bulb joke...? Phil, cranking up his free-association neurons...

Okay, count me in. LabRat (ignoring the little voice now screaming "OMG - what are you doing?" inside her head )
Athos: If you'd told us what you were doing, we might have been able to plan this properly. Aramis: Yes, sorry. Athos: No, no, by all means, let's keep things suicidal.

Oh, heck. I need a new challenge to get me going again. I'm in.
Does anyone have a fish?
Paul
p.s. Any idea how many total parts there will be? Or does that just depend on the number of volunteers?
When in doubt, think about penguins. It probably won't help, but at least it'll be fun.

It's always such an embarrassment. Having to do away with someone. It's like announcing to the world that you lack the savvy and the finesse to deal with the problem more creatively. I mean, there have been times, naturally, when I've had to have people eliminated, but it's always saddened me. I've always felt like I've let myself down somehow.

Phil, No, there is no time frame; I think that will definitely add to the random-ness. What's your email address? I'll send you quotes right away! --Wanda
