A short story written to the song Always by Bon Jovi. The story is set in the time when Scardino showed up. Yes I hate the guy but don’t worry I didn’t kill him off. Though I was badly tempted. J

this romeo is bleeding
but you can't see his blood
it's nothing but some feelings
that this old dog kicked up
it's been raining since you left me
now I'm drowning in the flood
you see I've always been a fighter
but without you I give up
now I can't sing a love song
like the way it's meant to be
well, I guess I'm not that good anymore
but baby, that's just me
Clark sat on his couch and leant forward, putting his head in his hands. He should have known it wouldn’t work out. How could it? He ran away too often and he was too much of a wimp to tell her the truth about where he was going. But Scardino! Scardino, of all people! Perhaps he was all right really, perhaps it was just his own jealousy that was making him hate Dan. Yes, that and his cheesy ways. Plus, the way he barged in every time Clark had to run off to be Superman. Sighing, he let a tear slip down his cheek and land in front of him on the floor. Perhaps it was for the best.
yeah, I will love you
baby - Always
and I'll be there forever and a day -
Always
I'll be there till the stars don't shine
till the heavens burst and
the words don't rhyme
and I know when I die, you'll be on my mind
and I'll love you - Always
now your pictures that you left behind
are just memories of a different life
some that made us laugh, some that made us cry
one that made you have to say goodbye
what I'd give to run my fingers through
your hair
to touch your lips, to hold you near
when you say your prayers
try to understand
I've made mistakes, I'm just a man
Oh god! He couldn’t do this, he loved her too much. He couldn’t sit there, work beside her, watching her with Scardino. It made his heart ache so bad. It was for the best; as long as he kept telling himself that, he felt the slightest bit better. Not loads better, but a bit. Brushing away another tear, he spun into his suit and went for his daily patrol.
Flying over Lois’ apartment, he saw her just getting out a cab with Scardino. Staying just above the clouds so they couldn’t see him, he listened in on their conversation. He knew he shouldn’t and he knew this was not helping his heart, but he stayed anyway.
“Dinner was lovely, Dan, thanks.”
Dan grinned and leaned forwards, giving her a peck on the cheek. “Glad you liked it. But you’re still not happy. Lois, forget Kent. When was he ever there for you? I’ll be there, till the end of time.”
Lois’ smile faltered at the mention of Clark’s name. But she caught herself, and going up onto her tiptoes, she returned the kiss, kissing Dan on the cheek. “Night, Dan.”
when he holds you close, when he pulls you near
when he says the words you've been
needing to hear
I'll wish I was him `cause those words are mine
to say to you till the end of time
Clark heard no more as he flew away, the tears coursing down his cheeks, blurring his vision until he nearly flew into a tall building. Heading back to his apartment, Clark was surprised to see Lois sitting on his top step. Wiping away a few more tears and taking a deep breath, he turned the corner and acted surprised to see Lois there, which wasn’t that hard to act out.
“Clark…”
“Lois…”
They both spoke simultaneously.
“You go first,” Clark offered politely.
Lois reached up to cup Clark’s face in her hands. “Thanks, Clark. While I was with Scardino, I realized something. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life with him. I want you. I love you.” She proved it by wrapping her arms around his neck and pressing her lips to his. Running her tongue along his lower lip, asking for entry, she was delighted when he parted his lips for her. Pulling apart for air, Lois smiled and hugged him tighter.
yeah, I will love you
baby - Always
and I'll be there forever and a day -
Always
if you told me to cry for you
I could
if you told me to die for you
I would
take a look at my face
there's no price I won't pay
to say these words to you
well, there ain't no luck
in these loaded dice
but, baby, if you give me just one more try
we can pack up our old dreams
and our old lives
we'll find a place where the sun still shines
Scardino smiled from his hiding place behind the corner. He loved Lois and he always would but he knew from the beginning that she loved Kent. He had given it a go but he knew it would never work out. Lois and he just weren’t meant to be. A tear slipped at the thought of what he had lost and he turned and walked to his car. Heading to the airport, he rang his boss.
“Boss, where do you want me next? Job’s finished here.”
