Scavenger Hunt Challenge:
Lois put down her Novel and sighed. Why in books do people always have things work out for them? She knew it was silly to wish some of the fantastic things that happen to imaginary people could happen to an ordinary Metropolitan woman like herself, but a girl could dream right? Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll was a book that Ellen, in one of her sober periods during Lois’ youth, had read repeatedly to the sisters. At the time she hated hearing this story. How often could you listen to the same story over and over again? But recently after talking to Martha and Jonathon about what it was like to raise Clark, she learned that her Mother-in-law had also read this book to Clark and his friends. Not wanting to let it known she had effectively erased the novel from her memory, Lois set down to reread this and other books. She was pleasantly surprised by what she had forgotten.
Putting the novel aside, she stretched her arms above her head and behind before standing. The day was nearly over, and Clark was still in Smallville. His highschool girlfriend, Lana Lang, was having a fund-raiser tonight for new uniforms for the school’s Football team. All alumnae and especially team members had been invited to come along. The organizing committee also included some of Clark’s oldest friends. Chloe Sullivan and Pete Ross were both looking forward to tonight. It had been quite awhile since the three had sat down for coffee. All it really depended on was there being no international disasters. However, they didn’t know that, so Lois had her fingers crossed for them.
Crossing to the kitchen, she recalled that Clark had mentioned wanting to invite Jimmy, Perry and the rest of their friends over for a Mexican fiesta party soon. Perhaps she could start a shopping list for the party while she waited. Rummaging in the junk drawer she shoved aside ticket stubs to Muppets on Ice. Smiling to herself, she recalled how Romantic Clark thought it would be to see Kermit and Miss Piggy on ice. When she asked him what he thought was so romantic about a pig and a frog, he said something she thought of very touching. “We are a lot like Kermit and Piggy. They come from different worlds, the swamp and a farm, but they find each other and fall in love despite everything standing in their way.”
Underneath the ticket stubs she noted a message pad containing an old message to contact Professor Emil Hamilton at Star Labs. He had been working on a possible vaccine against Kryptonite with Doctor Bernard Klein. Protestations on her part aside, that experiment was still ongoing. This message was definitely beyond its usefulness, so she crumbled it up and tossed it into the kitchen waste basket. Finally at the bottom of the drawer she found a pad of paper. Strange that in a house belonging to two reporters, she had to dig so much for something necessary to their profession.
First items on her shopping list: pads of paper.
Hmm . . . If they were going to have a Mexican party, what should they serve? Salsa, Guacamole, nachos, tacos, Tequila and Flan. All these were added to the list. She knew Clark would do some editing and would offer to pick some of these up elsewhere to ensure an authentic look and feel. However, she knew he was aware she didn’t like depending on *super* help. In the end he probably would have to do some preparing at super speeds, but for now, plans would be made like any other married couple.
Looking at her watch she realized she hadn’t used up very much time, and that Clark was probably unaware that she was trying so hard to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon in useful indoor endeavours. Time to carry on.
Now that she had a tentative meal plan, it was time for decorations: Obviously a Pinata of some sort. Was it possible to get it in the shape of Linda Kings head? No, probably not. It’ll have to be a donkey instead, and she could imagine Linda’s head instead. It was bad enough that Linda had sold her story three years ago, but now it was coming on TV with tons of fanfare. Everyone in town was raving about it. Clark said to let it go, it was behind them now. What did he know? She could hold a grudge as long as she wanted, and could pick it right back up where she left it.
Next on the list for decor: Mexican flags, sombreros and cacti. That should be more than enough for the few people they’d have over. They were mostly guys after all, and although most were reporters, noticing their surroundings was not a skill at the top of their lists.
Lois tapped her pen against the counter top for a few minutes. What else did they need? What gives a party its ambiance? Of course how could she forget music? She’ll have to pick up a few Latin cd’s. Enrique Iglesias, Menudo, Ricky Martin and Selena. On second thought, she’ll check to see if Elvis did a Latin album. She doubted it, but if it existed, Perry would probably prefer that to any of her choices.
Okay, what now? She’d caught up on some reading and made lists to plan a party, but couldn’t get much further on that activity without her husbands help. Maybe she could bake a cake? She knew they had about a pound of butter in the freezer, but had no idea what else she would need. She remembered reading somewhere that pound cake had a pound of butter in it.
Rummaging through the Recipe shelf in the kitchen she found a hand written recipe book from Martha. About half way through she found her Recipe: one pound each of flour, butter, eggs and sugar. Well that sounds simple enough, but how do I know how many eggs are in a pound? Letting her eyes run down the page she decided maybe this wouldn’t be a good idea, what the heck is a slow oven?
The recipe book was quickly shoved back in place.
Lois wandered back into the livingroom and turned on the TV. A smile spread over her face as she realized she was on the classic TV show channel, and it was coincidentally on The Muppet Show. On this particular episode Kermit and Piggy were trying to take a flight to Antarctica to see the penguins, but Oceanic airlines wouldn’t let them. Out loud she thought, “well that’s where Clark’s wrong about the similarities.”
As she began to speak the room was filled with a slight breeze, causing her to lose her page in Alice in Wonderland. “I’m wrong about what?”
“About Kermit, Piggy and us.” She grinned. “There’s one thing that separates us from them. If they want to see the penguins in Antarctica, they have no choice but to fly. We have to fly too, but we can take the Superman Express.”
