Thank you for posting this part today! it was great, I loved it!

I have some things which made me think:

a. That was only one half of his secret, wasn't it?

b. He told/tells her in his language so ... if Nor uses those thingys he used in the series (the 'invisible cameras' or whatever they were)?

c. Does Lois develop superpowers ... does she still have them IF they get back to earth? Do Lois genes mutate under the radiation of the NK-sun?

Ok ... next part? Tomorrow? laugh peep

Wow. So, in a number of ways, Kal is basically a ten year old. Obviously he's much more intellectually mature than a ten year old, but his entire life experience comprises just ten years. That is a heck of a secret. But if Lois starts developing powers beyond X-Ray vision, she just might have him beat. Man, do they make an odd couple...

Eagerly awaiting more of this intriguing and original story!

Anyway, that pretty much sums everything up. That was officially the coolest secret in all the history of New Krypton stories.

Looking forward to more!

Well I was right about Kal being in a deep freeze or hibernation but the Lois developing Superpowers was a total surprise! I didn't see that coming. I hope she develops the rest. Imagine she can get rid of Nor or anyone else that threatens him in a heartbeat! AWESOME! Thanks by the way for thinking about an nfic possibility even if it is in the epilogue. I think it will work well with this story even if you get someone else to flesh it out if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Laura

Wow. Kal's secret was a total shock for me.

Okay, now that *that* is out of the way, I'm dying to hear Lois' confession about the superpower and to hear her read her letter (I'm sure Kal won't let her forget about that, x-ray vision or no).

BTW, I think our water problems have just been solved. Lois just needs to do some super-snooping to find those underground lakes and direct the drilling. Then she can turn her attention to figuring out what Nor's plan entails.

Woot! I can't wait for the next post. Bravo!

Like I said, not obvious. laugh

I, too, thought of Lois using her x-ray vision to find water. The trouble is, how would Kal explain to the council how he knows where the water is without giving away Lois's secret?

Wow, what an interesting idea for Kal's secret. It explains things like how he could be so ignorant about things like facial expressions and just generally naive. Although it doesn't explain how he learned to love and form attachments. Or rather, we can assume that he *didn't* learn to form attachments until Lois came along. Hence the awakening. He obviously learned about his duty to his people, though. I suppose that would be part of the training. The poor boy! He was concieved, protected, and trained entirely for the sake of his people, not for his own sake at all. His whole life he has been treated as a means and never as an end. How horrible! He's obviously brilliant if he could learn enough in six months that other people didn't realize that something was very odd about him. (Or maybe they did realize it, but they wouldn't say so since he's the Supreme Ruler.) This is a small community, though. Didn't people wonder where the Crown Prince was all that time? There must have been some kind of cover story.

Or could it be that Kal himself doesn't know the whole story? Was he truly in hibernation for all those years, or has his memory been somehow altered? How would he know the difference? He only has Ked and Yent's word for it. I wouldn't bring up such a convoluted idea were it not for that dangling clue about the searching mother. Somebody's child disappeared. Was it Kal or someone else? Is Lara alive somewhere? Is it a foster mother who is missing him? Is that another child altogether?

Curiouser and curiouser! laugh

Wow. That was just ... wow.

I certainly never would have guessed Kal's secret, but you nailed it perfectly when Lois says that she just bested him with one of her own. Never saw that coming. And I love it, in no small part because I'm hoping she'll have enough invulnerability to survive any nefarious plot that Nor might be hatching to get rid of her. And maybe even save Kal in the process.

I think what I like most about their relationship is how open Kal is about everything he's feeling. There are no games being played here. She asks a question and he answers it. When he doesn't understand, he asks for clarification. It's completely refreshing, not just for Lois and her bad romantic track record, but for me as a reader. Really, really enjoyable.

I am practically climbing the walls wanting Lois to express her suspicions about Nor, though. I can feel us getting closer and closer, and Lois's investigative mind is clearly going great guns. So the anticipation is killing me, especially since I half-expect Nor to slam into the room and launch his evil plot at any moment. You're doing a great job with your pacing and clearly have us right where you want us. wink

(Which can also be said about their inevitable conversion about the diagram and what else marriage includes, btw. goofy That conversation, too, is getting closer and closer, and I know I'm not alone in wanting to lock them into the room until they figure it all out, LOL. )

More, please! I am positively addicted to this story. thumbsup

So... when Kal was four months old, they put him in hiatus. And they kept him that way until he was fifteen and a half. Then they woke him up and told him to prepare to become the Supreme Ruler of New Krypton. And when he was sixteen years and one month old, seven months after he had been woken up from his fifteen-year-long hibernation, they married him off to Za.

Talk about robbing the cradle!!!!!

Wow. That explains Kal's innocence and complete lack of deceit. But it also says something about Kal's incredible strength of character. Imagine that he has turned out that marvellously compassionate in spite of Nor's (and Yent's, and Ked's?) horrible machinations!

Kal's secret isn't that tragic a confession, unless it has implications in NK society which Lois doesn't grasp (and, by extension, the readers). And apparently that's what he's afraid of. He thinks Lois will consider him less of a "person" because of his lack of upbringing (or lack of something).

And this sudden and unexpected display of Lois' powers will come in handy when she finds Nor's hidden stash of fresh water underground. Not to mention that his inability to hurt her will help thwart his evil plans. When will she start floating in her sleep? When will she accidentally set on fire the story she's working on? When will she hug Kal a little too hard and squeeze his breath out of him? And when will she clobber Nor and have Riz sew her a purple costume, cape included?

Interesting twist. Now she'll have one more reason to stay on New Krypton forever. She'll be able to help all those people openly and directly with her powers, and she won't need a secret identity to do it. And she can still publish her newspaper!

Looking forward to the next chapter.

Aaarg! You stopped before we could see Lois's reaction! Will she be relieved to discover that Kal's confession is not so tragic after all? Or will she freak out at the thought that all this time she's been dating a 10-year-old? Why did you have to end here?!?

Call out to Michael: This is all *your* fault! I *knew* telling Corrina that her posts are longer than those of other authors was a bad idea! Now she tells us she's "adjusting her chapter breaks." Who's fault is that? Huh? Huh? laugh

Awww. Is he thinking about this?:

You left us with many, many questions. How is Lois going to react to Kal's secret? How is Kal going to react to Lois's? Will Lois continue to develop superpowers? What is Nor's plan? Why would the knowledge that Kal was in hiatus for the first years of his life result in civil war on New Krypton? Is there *more* to his secret than what we've seen so far?

And, most importantly, when are Lois and Kal going to talk about that diagram?

Between them, Lois, Kal and Tek should definitely be able to solve the water problem on New Krypton and stop the evil plans of Nor!

jawdrop To the secret. Though some people got pretty close. I think most of us just thought he'd been locked away on his own or something though, rather than in 'hiatus.' Poor Kal, no wonder he feels embarrassed. I'm sure Lois won't care. Though he can only recall the last 10 years, he is a fully-grown man and he's had to develop a great deal of maturity in order to lead New Krypton. Due to recent developments, she's likely to be a lot more concerned how he will feel about her when he knows her secret! Of course, we know it won't change his feelings, he already knows she's an alien after all. At least they can work through it together and hopefully put her powers to very good use.

I know it's hard to believe, but I thought just the other day it would have been an interesting twist for Lois to get superpowers under a red sun. I just thought as she hadn't so far it wouldn't happen. It seems they just take time to develop. I forget it's still only been a week or so she's been there. Oh dear, watch out Krypton, with a Lois with the power to eavesdrop etc! Clark was always very careful not to abuse his power, an inquisitve Lois may have more trouble helping herself, especially until she gets used to her powers. Imagine how confusing it will be if Lois and Kal ever do visit earth!

It was a wonderful part as always. Can't wait for the next part of the conversation! I hope they're not interrupted again.

Quote
Under the plate was a piece of paper. Lois picked it up and immediately smiled. It was a simple drawing of a woman sitting on a bed facing a man sitting on a chair. The man had a plate of food on his lap; the woman was holding a cup with a waft of steam floating above it. Above the picture was the word, ‘LOIS’ and below it was the word, ‘KAL.’
This was lovely, Kal has become so thoughtful. He uses everything Lois has taught him so well.

Quote
But her gut told her Nor was a man with a plan.

And that plan did not bode well for Kal.
Lois' reporter's instincts are still very much on form. It is time she told Kal though. I imagine he will be shocked, but he knows Nor is not to be trusted, he's done some awful things, and Kal has had to step in to protect people from him. He has learned in a short time to trust Lois. She is the only person he has ever had a loving, trusting bond with. Now we fully understand why. It makes me feel so sad for him. Lois must want to hold him and never let go, but he is stonger than his innocence suggests.

Quote
He put on his newest coat and straightened it. Then he glanced around the room; he tidied the already tidy pile of Disputes. He had no intention of working on them this evening.
laugh Kal is on a mission. Supreme Ruler duties can wait! The strict monotony of his life has at last been broken. It doesn't mean he no longer cares about his duties, he's just more able to realise that altering his schedule a little will do no harm. There are other ways to live, and much better ways to spend his time!

Quote
He really wanted tonight to go well.

He wanted Lois to smile a lot. He hoped there would be opportunity to turn off their Translators so he could become more proficient in her language. He wanted to hold her hand and touch her face.
Aww. He has such lovely, simple, expectations and such appreciation of the little things. It is so refereshing and sweet.

Quote
And, if everything had gone really well, he was hoping it would be appropriate to linger over their goodnight kiss.
The way he's thinking what's appropiate seems to suggest someone, i.e. Tek, has told him to go back to basics and build-up gradually.

Quote
“Yes.” She stepped forward, but paused as she passed him and hesitated long enough to kiss his mouth. It was short, but there was something about it that made him think it held a promise of more to come.
Perhaps his expectations aren't quite so innocent now!

Quote
She smelled wonderful. Kal took her hand and walked her to his bedroom.
love wink Imagine the power she'll have when they take things further!

Quote
He seemed less troubled by her refusal to agree to marry him. He *would* ask her again – she was sure of that. And when he did, she intended to find out *exactly* what he meant by marriage.
You do that Lois - soon!!

Quote
He shuffled through her papers and then returned with one sheet. When he held it up, Lois recognised it as the letter she had written to Kal. “I noticed this writing starts with my name and finishes with yours,” he said. “Is it a letter?”
Ooh, I'd almost forgotten about that, and that it was bound to come up again at some point. Kal clearly didn't forget. He's keen to know everything about Lois and her writing etc.

Quote
She hadn’t realised the full repercussions of teaching him written words. “Yes.”
She's not going to be able to hide under the cover of her own language for much longer.

Quote
“Why do you want me to read it to you, Kal?” she asked, buying time to navigate her way through this. “Is it because you’d like to know what I said in the letter? Or because you are worried about telling me your secret?”

“Both,” he admitted.
Aww, she knows him so well.

Quote
Lois took the letter from him and placed it on the bed next to her. “I think it would be a good idea if we got it done first. I promise I will read you the letter after you’ve told me the secret.”
That means she has to read the letter now, and Kal won't forget!! Then he can ask her the awkward but all important questions!!

Quote
He was gone for a minute. Then a minute more. Lois perused her letter, imagining reading it to Kal. He was going to ask why she wanted to hold him, but couldn’t. And that was going to lead to a whole lot of explaining. Lois grinned suddenly ... maybe she should go with the writer’s mantra – show, don’t tell.

That would be easier ... and a whole lot more fun..
wink Go Lois, that's a good mantra!!

Quote
She stared at the door, wondering how rude it would be to attempt to hear what they were saying. It wouldn’t be rude at all, she decided, not for a reporter.
Good reasoning Lois!!! If you're a reporter it is perfectly acceptable to pry, eavesdrop, break-in etc.

Quote
The door peeled back and she stared *through* it.

Not through the doorway.

But literally *through* the closed door.
Oh boy!!!!

Quote
Lois slammed shut her eyes and tried to reassemble her splattered wits. What had just happened wasn’t possible. People did not see *through* doors.
It was hard enough for Lois on the show, and she had known about Superpowers for years, what they did and how they worked etc. For this Lois, who has never known Superman (well, she does now!), it must be so frightening and seem so freakish. Who knows what'll happen when the others develop.

Quote
Without waiting for her to reply, he helped her to her feet and gathered her into a close embrace. “Whatever happened Lois, we will be all right,” he said. “If we’re together, we’ll be all right. I won’t ever leave you.”
Even with his lack of experience of intimacy, Kal has already learned when it will be welcomed and what to say to comfort etc. He has seemingly never had to offer support or comfort before, just as he has never been given it, but he is a natural.

Quote
He discovered his hand on her head was moving ... gliding slowly through her soft hair. It would probably untidy it, but he couldn’t help it. He had to soothe her, had to comfort her, had to do something to make her world right again. “It’s all right,” he murmured against her ear. “It’s all right, my Lois. My lovely Lois. I love you. It’s all right.”
This was beautiful and it's all suddenly coming so naturally to him. They can get through it all with this strength of love.

Quote
“What happened?” he said.

“I don’t know,” Lois said. “But I think I just trumped your secret.”
Yeah, I think she may be right!! At least they're a bit more equal now.

Quote
“All right.” Kal’s deep breath reverberated through him and he could feel the pounding rhythm of his heart. “What I’m about to tell you I have not told anyone before. I was told that it was my duty to never tell anyone.”
Hmm, I wonder why the bad guys would protect him, and if it was the good guys who did it, why is it a secret? Because Krypton was unlikely to accept someone with so little life experience as leader? Or maybe because they don't want the rest of Krypton to know Kal's well-respected parents were so mistrusting of the other nobles.

Quote
There was still more - something in Kal’s tone told her there was more. “And?”

“And all the other years until I was fifteen and a half.”
Oooh, Corrina you've spoilt us again posting this chapter so quickly. It's going to be hard to be patient for Part 19!!

This sums up pefectly one of the things that makes this fic so unique and wonderful. Even in the later series, L&C weren't always open and honest about how they were feeling etc.

Oh this deserves so much more FDK than what I have time for right now frown

The superpowers totally took me off guard. Someone even suggested it a while back but I figured, there's no reason to go there and no precedent so why open that can of worms, too? Oh well, I don't mind. Except that my own Muse is really feeling peer-pressure now huh

How did Kal learn his basic skills in just 6 months? Or was there some sort of in-sleep education? And have his stigma-fears something to do with his education not being official, just like Tek's wasn't official and so he wasn't accepted as a scientist?

The letter was a nice touch and Kal is a quick study if he can deduce cursive letters from block ones. At least, I'm assuming Lois taught him block letters first.

As for the diagram and a hand's on approach:
[Linked Image]
I'm sure Lois will help Kal with the intricate details on how to properly assemble their relationship.

Hope I haven't forgotten anything too important and oh, yeah, warm and fuzzy feeling all over this part laugh

PS: Vicki, I'm sure that I also suggested upping the frequency while cutting the part-size so that we can get nice, happy 4k parts on a daily basis laugh
