I must say that, like Michael, I am wondering how Kal could get through all the mental and psychological development of a 15-year childhood in six months. There are some huge tasks that happen between 4 months and 15 years. Things like developing an idea of self as distinct from others, language acquisition, both oral and written, learning to negotiate and influence the physical environment, developing social skills, developing a basic personality and a set of values. Not to mention developing control of one's own body, both large motor like standing and walking and small motor like writing or fastening buttons. And these require physical changes like developing very complex networks of neurons and muscle strength and control. Are we to understand that Kal awoke as a mental infant in an adolescent body? Or was there some sort of education going on during those years? I'm still leaning toward the 'raised somewhere else and had his memories erased' theory. The more I think of it, the less I believe that he could have developed so quickly. And having a fifteen-year-old son disappear could explain why Mom is still looking for him. She could believe that he ran away and she's searching the horizon like the father in the Prodigal Son story.
This *is* my happily ever after.

Wow, what a great part. And what a sad secret. Kind of reminds me of "the Pretender". This is a very well written chapter. Your story is just amazing!!!

Wow! Great part and great revelations for both of them. It does explain Kal's innocence and his honesty and lack of guile. Although I still wonder you the person on earth was with the tears. Is it sadness over Lois or is this somehow tied to Kal? Looking forward to the next part real soon, hopefully. I LOVE this story. Thanks for another great part. Kathy www.chili-everyway.com

I don't know how much time I have with internet access and I'm really hoping to get 21 off to Iolanthe today - so this is going to be a quick reply. RE the chaper breaks - I split 18 and 19 into three which meant you could have 18 and still leave me with 2 parts as a buffer. If hadn't shortened 18, you wouldn't have got it until today at the earliest! Hope that works for everyone Re the cursive - good point, Michael, about block and cursive letters. Lois taught him their names in block, but K, L,(capital) O and S are the same and l and i are similar, so it wasn't too much of leap. Emma - Yorkshire Pudding ... yummmmm! I had English parents. Did you have roast beef with it? If I can get 21 to Iolanthe today, I'll work on 19 tonight, then post it the next time I get internet access. A huge thank you for sticking with me and leaving such wonderful FDK. I'm relieved that the secret worked OK and satisfactorily explained some of the questions about Kal. Corrina.

Corrina (and Michael), You *do* know I was only kidding about the chapter breaks, right? Corrina, you can post as much or as little as you want, as often as you can or as infrequently as you need. I'll still be here, grateful for whatever you can give me. I LOVE THIS STORY! HappyGirl said: I'm still leaning toward the '[...] had his memories erased' theory. Or maybe it's just the opposite. Maybe he had his memory implanted. Well, not so much memory, but instructions. These people mastered space travel, implanted translators, and who knows what else before their planted exploded. Couldn't they have developed a way to put a baby in haitus and then implant the necessary instructions for all the things you mention (language, motor skills, cultural values, etc.)?

I knew you were joking, Vicki :p , but I was in a hurry to just get in an explanation and get to some writing! Anyway, I've managed to get Part 21 to Iolanthe, so will put a final polish on 19 tonight and post it the very next time I get net access. Thanks Corrina. RE the language discussion in the other thread - how very apt for my current situation. Tonight we are dining on a Canadian specialty which seems to me to be hot chips covered in a variety of toppings. But, of course Canadians call them fries, and when you add in the French connection, they become poutine!!

Yay, can't wait Corrina. By the way, yes, I did have roast beef with my Yorkshire Pudding and it was delicious! The chips you are having sound lovely, of course, there's another confusing one, 'chips', 'crisps' and 'fries'!! Em

Yes, what HappyGirl said. I, too, find it amazing that Kal could develop the mind (and the body control) of a fifteen-year-old in six months. Wow, you know. (There's a reason why we humans have a proportionally longer childhood than any other member of the animal kingdom - it's because we have to learn so much, and learning takes time. But maybe Kal isn't human?) So maybe Kal really hasn't been asleep for most of his life, he just thinks he has! But maybe he really has been asleep after all - and I'm not complaining either way... Finally, now that Lois has become Ultrawoman on New Krypton, enquiring minds want to know - is there any deadly Earthite on New Krypton? (And if so, what color is it?) Don't give this flower to Lois? Ann, I couldn't help but notice that you and President Obama have something in common. Maybe that's why you've been thorbjorned lately.

I SO did not see that coming! I might be the only one, but I'm more interested in Kal's reaction to Lois's secret than in Lois's reaction to Kal's secret. I think Kal's secret is only going to further Lois's determination to get to the bottom of things, especially as she had just been wondering how Kal had even survived long enough to become First Lord.
Thank you for posting while you're on vacation!
Can't wait for more! Amber

I knew you were joking, Vicki Ah, good! Because it wouldn't be the first time that I had posted something online where I thought it was blatantly obvious I was just kidding around, and the recipient took me seriously. When you responded to my "complaint" with an actual explanation, I thought, "Oh, no! I didn't make it clear I was just having fun. What must she think of me? What must *Michael* think of me?!" So, any chance you're reading this TODAY (Saturday)? Because if you are, that means you have internet access, and *that* means you'll be posting Chapter 19!

Just wanted to make one point about Lois's powers. Seeing through the wall was actually the second incident - the first being when she heard Kal from her room in the Concubine Quarters on the night of the massacre. Some of the FDK decided it had been a 'soul mate type telepathy' and I didn't disagree. Thanks for all the amazing feedback, Corrina.

Michael, Yes, well, unfortunately the 'daily posting' part hasn't exactly panned out now, has it? Hey, if my memory serves me, wasn't there some talk awhile aback about a quid pro quo involving more frequent postings of 'Awaken My Heart' in exchange for part 4 of 'PML - The Whole Story'? I think you guys should get together and work out the details. That sounds like a win-win arrangement for all concerned.

Some of the FDK decided it had been a 'soul mate type telepathy' and I didn't disagree. [Big Grin] Now that's confusing because wouldn't she have been surprised to hear from that far away when she hadn't before? Then maybe the seeing shouldn't be so surprising. It's the second episode of powers, so she shouldn't be so surprised. She needs to tell Kal about her hearing too. Artemis

The way I read it, Lois didn't realise about the hearing-thing, she imagined she had 'sensed it' like a lot of us did. Either that or she was half-asleep and didn't really know what was happening. I don't think she actually thought she 'heard' Kal. She may well look back and realise, especially when she 'super-hears' the next time. I loved the comment about Riz making a costume for her by the way!!
I was so impressed when I read it wasn't the first time!! It hadn't occured to me, but it shows just how well written and thought out this fic is. I will have to read back and spot clues.
I'm pretty sure from Lois' reaction etc she thought seeing through the wall was the first weird thing. Can't wait for more!

Perfect explanation, Em. Lois awoke from sleep - she'd been dreaming. When she got to Kal, he was distraught about the massacre ... I thought that was enough to make it reasonable that Lois didn't immediately realise how strange it was. I mean ... it is usual to go around wondering 'which superpower will I develop today?'

Okay, I'm soooooooooooooo slow sometimes.... Four days ago, HappyGirl wrote: Ann, I couldn't help but notice that you and President Obama have something in common. Maybe that's why you've been thorbjorned lately. I thought to myself, What? I have something in common with President Obama???? And then it occurred to me... President Obama is this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner... and ehrmmm, it seems that on these boards, I'm a Nobel Peace Prize winner, too! Well, it says so every time I post something here, because I have posted more than five thousand times! What can I say? The Nobel Peace Prize ain't what it used to be! But thanks for pointing my similarity to President Obama out to me, HappyGirl! I'm humble, humble and thorbjorned! Ann
