I'm sure they poisoned Clark's food just to make sure he died! Which is kind of overkill, but Tempus doesn't want to take any chances.

I didn't know they had female gladiators, but I'm glad Xena's close anyway, if she can just get out of that cage.

I love the way you showed the differences between Mad Dog Lane and Lois. It's almost like she has her own alter ago.

And not to be sarcastic or anything, but what a great place to end the chapter. grumble

jawdrop No! You can't stop there! That's just cruel! Although I really like this chapter- the battle scene was well written, and Lois's personality shifts are very good. As a side note, I also liked Lois coming up with "Sangria" for a name laugh Very clever.

Can't wait for more! Clark needs help!

Well, it wouldn't be Tempus really. Remember, Tersius stands to make a *lot* of money if/when Clark dies. Tempus is just the one demanding that Clark die.

In real life, I don't think there were female gladiators. However, anything and everything goes in the Xenaverse. laugh

Glad you liked the switch between Mad Dog Lane and Lois. I wasn't sure if that worked the way that I wanted it to. Looks like it did though. laugh

As for the ending.... *insert maniacal laughter here*

Thanks Mouse! Don't look at it as a chapter break....look at it like a commerical break. Besides, I never promised to play fair in this story. wink devil

Glad you enjoyed the battle. I love writing action scenes, but I am always afraid that they might not translate well to the reader. Ken J takes about half the credit on this particular fight scene though.

Glad you liked "Sangria" - Xena and Hercules had a history of using ridiculously funny names (like Archivus the scribe). I was just upholding tradition with Mimosa and Sangria. laugh

Humbly, I beg to differ. The original concept was yours. All I did was clean it up a little bit to correct some minor errors.

Oh no! You can't end it there! (But you just did.)

I didn't know that about the ridiculous names - good job!

Am I wrong in saying that you have more blood and guts in this fic than they ever showed on the "Xena" TV show? I saw it once or twice and there seemed to be a lot of stunts (for some reason, Lucy Lawless flipping through the air comes to mind) but I don't recall overt bleeding.

Regarding female gladiators: Noted historical novelist url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gillian_bradshaw]Gillian Bradshaw[/url] has a book out, "Render Unto Caesar", where a main character is actually a female gladiator. It's not the best Bradshaw book ever, but it's very readable. Plus, you learn a lot about gladiators.

Thanks Io!

I'd say that I'm on par with some of the gorier episodes. Actually, the first season finale "Is There A Doctor In The House?" almost never made it to airing because some sponsers thought it was too gory and they wound up cutting parts. (Xena actually aputates a leg on screen and a lot of that footage wound up on the cutting room floor so that it could actually air.) There were definitely a lot of stunts on the show (Lucy flips a *lot*) and some episodes were far less bloody than others. We do even get the ocassional throat slit right on screen and plently of people being impaled by various weapons.

Is the blood a problem with the fic though? Should I consider scaling it back?

*ducks and hides as there is more fighting yet to come*

"Starting?" Lois echoed. "What does that mean?"
Clark's likely not dead yet?

Quote
"I overheard some centurions talking while I was out. Caesar's festival is going on for seven days."
Since it gets more obvious later on... And yeah, I did read sort of ahead of FDK blush Anyway, aren't centurions the officers only, not the regular soldiers?

Quote
"Let me guess," Lois sighed unhappily. "Every day has fights scheduled."
Nono, only on the first day. Later on, there will be a knitting contest, a Rome's Got Talent show, clown acts, and on day seven, it will culminate in a free-for-all-free-Romans orgy on the arena sands.

Quote
Would Clark really be there tomorrow? Would their plan to free him work? What if they failed? What if Xena couldn't get to Clark on time? Would Tempus be there? If he was, would he spot her and raise the alarm?
And there's still so many parts left. What will they do after they fail?

Quote
Part of her wondered if her nightmare had come strictly from her own distraught mind or if Morpheus, the god of dreams, had decided to torment her during the night.

Layman's terms mostly.

d we meet him on the show? Was he a cordial fellow?
Erm, kinda. We met some of his followers in Season One's episode "Dreamworker" not the god himself. But he didn't seem to be a very nice god, what with wanting Gabrielle to kill and then be sacrificed to him as his bride and all.

Quote
Yes, but Clark in a costume similar to Lois's blue veil number from season one might have also attracted attention.

Didn't patrician women travel in litters? /goes hunting and huh, apparently there had been sidesaddles back then, too./ The things you learn...
Xena's good at poker, but not that good?

Quote
And on second reread, given Ellen's fondness of all things wine, very fitting indeed. /imagines Ellen slurring "Sangria, come to mama."/
rotflol I actually hadn't thought of that when I wrote this. The names just popped into my head one night as I getting ready to shower. laugh

Sad and funny at once. /imagines Jimmy in place of Ren/
laugh He is kinda Jimmy-like. Without the Interruptus part.

Glad you are still reading!
