Okay! We're getting somewhere now!
Holy Bat-mobile-glider, things are getting ready to pop. Thought it was telling that Dad and Bil both thought that it was a possibility that Kal's dreams were accurate. Look out Lux & Nor. The good guys are getting ready to take you down!!! And when they get done, Luci will be free to marry someone better, Lux will not have Lois (unless Dr. K'lly can bring him back from being hung), and Kal will have more power than ever before because he is not only a good fighter, and a good lover, but a good dreamer also. Covers just about all the bases.
Good story, Vicki. Pat

A new chapter! "I'm so sorry, Dad," he whispered to the empty, lifeless room around him, his voice barely audible to his own ears. Poor Jor! Another "kid" missing! But we all know that Kal/Clark is a lunkhead. And, by the way, "lunkhead" is a word that I never learned when I took english in "lycée" (french word for "highschool"). You know, I learned some new words on these boards: "lurkism", "feedback".... And, yes, "chumpy" is a word. Back to the story: "Ruce? It's me, Kal. I need your help." SuperKal and Bat-Ruce? What a team!

Good story, Vicki. Pat Hi, Pat! Yes, things are coming to a head and will burst in the next chapter. Yes, I realize that only puts us at chapter 18. I have plans. To be fair to Jor-El and Bil, they both know Kal wouldn't pursue something unless he was more than 100% convinced of the truth/worthiness of a cause. Also, they are desperate for *any* leads, even if it *does* come from a dream. It's not so much a suspicion of Lux's guilt. And, of course, everyone knows how brutal Nor and his brothers are, so that helps. Many more things still to come in the remaining chapters. Will Luci marry? Will everyone get out safely? Will Kal be too late to save Jai? Tune in next time! And thanks, for sticking with this!

Poor Jor! Another "kid" missing! But we all know that Kal/Clark is a lunkhead. I actually took French in high school (and a semester in college). Well, French and Latin in high school (honor's kid here - was forced to take Latin). Sad to say, I'm actually forgotten a lot of my French. Anyway...yeay for randomness! You know, I actually *did* try chumpy on Scrabble recently (Hubby and I play on our phones). It wouldn't accept it as a word! SuperKal and Bat-Ruce? What a team! Next chapter is "Two (Super) Men On A Mission." Soon, I hope, and with a happy ending: Kal and Ruce (and Lois) will save the others; Lux Uthor and his sons will be arrested or killed; Luci will fall in love with...Jai? or Ruce? And she'll marry him. Hmmm...you seem to have things all figured out, huh? Well, we'll see.

I read this last night, but wasn't coherient enough to tie together two thoughts into a sentance. Now, I'm awake... better FDK. And, by the way, "lunkhead" is a word that I never learned when I took english in "lycée" (french word for "highschool"). Syndey, that's because it's a made-up word from the show. But we all know what she meant. Previously On Contractually Bound (Chapter 15)... Chapter 17... "That's it!" Kal said, his voice taking on an excited edge as he tried to shake off the images his dreams had stirred up. "That has to be it." Nice long nap there, Kal. He stood and stretched, wondering where the Supreme Lord was. Realy? He thinks of his dad in that way? The steel-stiffness of his depressed body fell away. But... But... we like his body like steel! He knew that Lord Nor had his family; knew it with absolute certainty, though he had no hard proof. Isn't that always the way it goes?! He needed a plan in order for that to happen though. And he needed help. This was one battle he knew he could not fight alone. He needs to call in Ruce! Ruce is good at plans and good in a fight (well, except when the rest of Kal's family was taken.) He knew that he needed to find his father. Needed to find Bilan. Needed, perhaps, even to seek out the friends that he had in Krypton's military RUCE! In the next moment, Kal left his father's study, completely focused on what he had to do. He stalked through the halls of the palace, like a wildcat searching for prey. His mind was entirely fixed on the knowledge that Nor had been the kidnapper. They going to kidnap Kal as he roamed the empty hallways of the palace! <<bites fingernails>> His eyes saw nothing except Lord Nor's murderous, vengeful eyes. Nor's THERE?! As if spoken through layers of heavy cotton, the words directed at him were muddled and muffled until they were no longer intelligible and no longer had the power to divert his attention. He was only dimly aware that he was no longer on the tournament field, though his mind imprisoned him back on the field on that fair fall afternoon. He nodded distractedly as he walked, some tiny part of his mind registering the servants he was passing. Not really himself, is he? "The main receiving hall?" Kal echoed, wondering aloud. "For what?" Duh! Kal, it's Monday, time to listen to petty complaints from the noble and peasant class. Work must go on. Had he chosen to give in to Nor's demands? Oh, please, Jor-El, NO! After what felt like a year of half-walking, half-running through the halls, Kal was finally in sight of the main hall. He really needs a inter-palace hover craft. Jor-El stood talking with a small group of people. Kal needed only a split second to identify them. Lord Ra, Zara's esteemed father. Samm, Elle, and Luci Lyne, Lois' family. Yikes! The women's families. They're going to blame Kal for buying the hot chocolate and not being there to protect the womanfolk! Kal had been so preoccupied with his own worries that he'd quite forgotten Zara and Lois' families. The thought shamed him. Good! He should feel ashamed. He wanted to run screaming through the room that he knew who had their loved ones. But now that he had found his father, the idea seemed absurd to him; that a dream had given him the answers his waking mind hadn't been able to figure out. Which idea was absurd? That Nor was to blame? Or that he wanted to run screaming through the room? Luci was crying; tears stained her cheeks and her eyes were red and glassy. Boldly and unashamedly, she hugged the prince tightly and sobbed on his shoulder. Ooooh. She really likes him. Is she hoping her birth-husband and her sister get killed and she can have Kal to herself? "Samm. Elle. My Lord Ra," he said, greeting each of them in turn. "We need to talk." Is there a reason that he addresses Samm & Elle by their first names and not by their titles? Is this because they are lessor nobles, his wife's family, or don't have official titles? Or is it just that Lord Ra doesn't have a first name? "I think I might know who the abductors are," Kal replied in a hushed tone. "But I don't want to speak of it in the open. We already know that Jen Mai was a traitor and a spy. I don't know who else might be." Good thinking, there, Kal. He paced before the floor to ceiling windows, though he never once looked out over the view it afforded him of the snow and ice covered gardens, once so beautiful to his eyes but now seeming grotesque and misshapen. Yep, so long Winter Festival! "Nor?" Jor-El repeated, as though unable to believe his ears. "Nor Uthor?"
The prince nodded. "I'm almost positive."
"How?" his father asked. "Have you come across some new evidence? Um... No. A little birdy told me in a dream... and um... the birdy was dancing with a pink elephant, but I think the elephant really didn't mean anything at all. Or the bat hovering overhead. Or the mad dog nipping at the elephant's heels. The important part of the dream was the birdy jumping up and down squaking 'Nor's a dodo! Nor's a dodo!'" "So...my daughter is missing because...Lord Nor Uthor is upset with you for besting him in a duel?" Lord Ra asked gently, trying to puzzle out all of the pieces. Lord Ra: So, this is all your fault? Kal: No, Nor and the Uthor family. They're the ones behind this. Lord Ra: If she loses another baby because of this... And you could have stopped this by throwing the drei fight... Kal: Eeeps! "And what of Lord Uthor himself?" Zara's father asked. Kal couldn't be sure if Lord Ra believed him yet, or if he was merely humoring him. "Do you believe that he is also involved?" Yes! Yep. Yes, sirree, Bob. You don't mind me calling you "Bob" do you, Lord Ra? Nor and his brothers don't make a move without a nod from their dear ol' dad. Kal shook his head again. "I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. Lux has always been friendly with our family. He's even a friend of yours, my lord. I just don't know. And I won't know, until we bring in the whole family for questioning and search their estate." "Lux can't have anything to do with it," Samm said with certainty in his voice. "He wouldn't dare harm Lois. His son, Nor, is promised to Luci." First this: ( he's the Supreme Leader? Maybe Lux is right, they do need a change at the top!), then this: Pooor Luci! "I'm not proud of it," Samm admitted sheepishly. "You see, Nor's birth-wife died in the Red Fever epidemic. For whatever reason, Lux didn't arrange another one right away. But when we were expecting Luci, Lord Uthor approached me and offered his son up as Luci's birth-husband. I saw a good opportunity to secure a prosperous future for her, and accepted the contract that Lux produced. I realize now that I made a mistake. And I wish to Rao that I hadn't done it. But the contract is iron-clad, the same as yours to Lois. I can't undo it. Believe me, I've tried." And this is why reform is needed on Krypton.

FDK - Part 2 - Kal felt himself growing ill at Samm's confession, felt as if the entire room had been slanted to one side, felt himself sliding closer to some vast, ominous abyss. He couldn't blame his old friend. There couldn't have been a way for Samm to know that Nor would grow up to be a sociopath. But his stomach roiled all the same. First, Samm's his old friend? Jor-El's maybe, but Kal's? And, secondly, if you think you feel like this from this idea, how do you think Luci's feeling about now? Think about someone other than yourself for a change there, SuperKal! "Kal," Jor-El said, looking his son in the eye, and jarring him back to the present. "These are serious accusations. You are accusing the Uthors of treason of the highest level. This isn't something we can treat lightly." There was no reproach in his voice, only an earnest hope that Kal knew the gravity of what he was saying. Ooooh, , High Treason! That would break the marriage contract! He shook his head again, trying to loosen his tongue, now that it had gone leaden. "I don't know yet. Yep, thinking is not Kal's strong point. "Wouldn't it look strange if they suddenly just took off to one of their other homes, just as the royal family is abducted?" No, it would look like they were getting out of Dodge before someone came to kidnap his sons. Although, really, who would want them? :p "What if we sent someone to the Uthors' estate?" Luci asked. "Someone innocent looking. Just to check things out." Good plan, Luci, you volunteering? "If they're even the ones to have them," Samm added gloomily. Sure, the Uthor's are innocent, Jor-El. Any other suspects there? No, then shut-up! "I don't know. Maybe someone looking for Lord Uthor's help in the search." He ran his hand through his hair as he thought. Ooooh. How about Ruce?! "Or maybe someone in disguise," Luci offered. "Someone to poke around right under their noses, without the Uthors being aware they are even there." Ruce! Ruce! Ruce! Or even better, Ruce & Luci! Batman and Batgirl! I likey! Jor-El looked dubious. "Breaking and entering?" he asked quietly. "It would be one thing if we had any sort of hard evidence..." Right. Isn't this the same man who wanted all the homes on Krypton checked not a few hours before? All I would need to do is disguise myself as one of the officers, and I could slip in unnoticed. Really, Kal? You? No, no, no! Ruce! He wouldn't be in this story just to be a red herring. Call your buddy! He's not next in line to be Supreme leader. We already know the kidnappers don't want him. He said he'd do anything. Send Ruce! "No. This plan of yours...I admit that it has merit. So much so, that I am inclined to follow it through. But...you will not be the one to do this."
"I have to be the one," Kal insisted grimly. "I've been in the Uthors' manor before. I know my way around it. How many of our security officers can say the same thing?" <<cough>> Lunkhead! <<cough>> I'm sure Ruce knows the layout of the Uthor manor as well, Kal. The Supreme Lord shook his head. "I said no. There must be another that we can send to do this task." "But, DAD! I wanna go! Please, please, please, with a cherry on top! I'll be good. Really! You'll see. I can do this, Dad. Really, I can. It won't like I'm going into a trap or a lion's den or anything. Just because they missed me the first time, I'm the perfect bait!" <<pouting as Jor-El still shakes his head 'no'.>> "Geez, Dad, you never let me do anything." "It must be done tonight," Jor-El countered. "We're running out of time. The note that was sent to me...I do not wish to see if they are bluffing. I won't risk my children's lives."
"And we'll need time just in case Nor, Ran, and Drull aren't the abductors," Lord Ra said, shooting Kal an apologetic look. Yes, let's not take a couple of days to put this to vote with the elders. "I'll place troops here, along the eastern edge of the Uthor estate. This line of trees and brush will conceal them a bit, though it would be better if it wasn't winter and everything was in bloom. Still, we can make this work. I'll have some men patrolling here in the south as a decoy. To draw their eye elsewhere. We'll send in one, maybe two men to have a look around." Why do I have a strange feeling that this plan will backfire on them? Jor-El nodded. "I want you to arrange a security detail to guard each of our personal chambers. I'll have the staff prepare the guest rooms for you," he said, looking at Lord Ra and the Lynes. He shifted his eyes back to Bil. "Ensure that a careful watch is kept on my son's chambers. He is not to leave them for any reason."
"Dad!" Kal sputtered in disbelief. Jor-El knows his son. There had never been fear of any rebellions, uprisings, wars, or takeovers from neighboring planets, not for at least a thousand years or so. What did the criminal element do for fun?... So, it's Utopia? Gee, thanks, Herb. This isn't what I thought you meant by Utopia. I should have know, you coming from the 1800's and all. "I'm going to take care of my brothers' cats," he informed his escorts, without so much as a backwards glance over his shoulder. Thank you. Kal obligingly scratched the cat behind his ears and under his chin, eliciting an immediate start to the cat's purring. But Kal took no notice, no joy, no comfort from the tabby's presence. Gee, he was kinder to his brother's cats than to Fasa. What did Fasa do to deserve that? It amazed Kal that he hadn't shed a tear while he sat there. He wanted to, needed the sweet release that it offered, needed to unburden some of the painful weight that sat on his heart and in his chest, crushing him, driving the air from his lungs, slowly killing him as he struggled against it. But none would come, as though his entire body had gone completely dry, making it physically impossible for any moisture to pool in his eyes to spill wastefully down his cheeks. He's probably dehydrated from all the other times he's cried. He just needs to drink some water and then he will be able to cry again. He attempted to read, but after reading the same line ten times and still not knowing what it said, he gave up. He flipped through the channels on his video screen, but found the sudden influx of sound to be unsettling without Lois' presence to offset it. He flicked the monitor off again and tossed the remote to the far end of the couch. He went back to pacing. Yep, going stir crazy. Did Jor-El really think leaving Kal alone in his aparmtent was the best idea for his son? He's a man of action, not a man good with quiet reflection. His gut instinct told him that he was the one who needed to explore the Uthors' manor. He'd been there before. Not many others had. Lux was very particular about who he allowed into his home. Kal felt certain that his foreknowledge was an advantage that would mark the difference between the mission being a success or a failure. <<cough>> stubborn lunkhead <<cough>> "Ruce? It's me, Kal. I need your help." FINALLY! Kal's brain has started working again. At least he's not going half-cocked on his own. I think they should bring Luci too. But... But... But... We just got to the good part! Lunkhead and BatBoy go out to bash heads!

Woo-hoo! Progress!! ) Look out, Uthor's. I get a feeling there's a beatdown coming your way. But on the other hand, I'm still okay with knocking somebody off. If that's what's in your plan. Make it a struggle, of course. Otherwise- it's clobberin' time! (Wow, I'm just full of the superhero cliche's tonight, aren't I?) Anyway. Good chapter! Especially liked the inclusion of the Lyne's here, as well as Bil'an. Can't wait till the next chapter! Saturday? Sunday? Saturday. Or Thursday, if you'd be so kind... Off to make my sugar rush productive...

Syndey, that's because it's a made-up word from the show. Actually, when I belonged to Planet Fitness, there was a sign on the wall that said something like: "Lunkhead: Someone who drops weights and/or grunts while lifting." Nice long nap there, Kal. Nah, really wan't supposed to be. Realy? He thinks of his dad in that way? Isn't that always the way it goes?! Of course! He needs to call in Ruce! Understatement of the year. Duh! Kal, it's Monday, time to listen to petty complaints from the noble and peasant class. Work must go on.

It might break Nor too! Yep, thinking is not Kal's strong point. Right. Isn't this the same man who wanted all the homes on Krypton checked not a few hours before? Um, he wanted to tear apart the public places for clues. The terror forces were Michael's troops. Really, Kal? You? No, no, no! Ruce! He wouldn't be in this story just to be a red herring. Call your buddy! He's not next in line to be Supreme leader. We already know the kidnappers don't want him. He said he'd do anything. Send Ruce! Yeah, but this is *Kal*. Strong of heart. Woo-hoo! Progress!! Go kick some hiney, Kal! And smart move bringing the Bat-Kryptonian along with. You know, at first I contemplated sending him with Jak, then I got the idea to write Ruce into the story. Nananananananananananananananana- Cool Guys! But on the other hand, I'm still okay with knocking somebody off. If that's what's in your plan. Make it a struggle, of course. Otherwise- it's clobberin' time! Or on Sunday. Depends when I get enough free time to prep the next chapter for posting. I'm having everyone over my house on Saturday for Mother's Day, so today and tomorrow are dedicated to cleaning and prepping food. Off to make my sugar rush productive... That means new L&C fics, right?

Are you *sure* it wasn't five cups of coffee??? Yep. Sugar hits me pretty hard. Plus I don't drink coffee. Should start though, for the mornings. (Have I mentioned that I'm a really bad person in the mornings?) Hmmm...well, I think I can satisfy your bloodlust by the story's end. Wait. What?! NO!!! WAIT! I didn't mean... I mean, don't just do it for my sake! I didn't put that into your head! I want deniablity! That means new L&C fics, right? Yep. Sugar hits me pretty hard. Plus I don't drink coffee. Should start though, for the mornings. (Have I mentioned that I'm a really bad person in the mornings?)

He knew that Lord Nor had his family; knew it with absolute certainty, though he had no hard proof. And Kal was determined to get them back. But there is no *proof*! He could almost feel the rapid firing of his synapses as he tried to slow his thoughts enough to make sense of them all. Lock picks. Battering ram. Drei. Nor. Boold. Gore. Lois. Nor. Blood Gore. Chain. Strangled. Tongue. Nor. Blood. Boom. If anything, it only seemed to fuel his brain into an even greater frenzy. So, he should probably not drink Red Krypton? Needed, perhaps, even to seek out the friends that he had in Krypton's military. But would anyone believe him? He’s almost the supreme commander. Couldn’t he, I don’t know, *order* them to storm the manor and shoot everyone in sight who’s not on the approved El family list. /hopes they’ve added Jai by now/ Gen nodded. "I saw him not ten minutes ago heading to the main receiving hall." Oh, great. It’s petition day. Nor will *so* regret being made Heir. Unless he figures out that he can request sexual favors from the petitioners in order to grant their wishes. "Begging your pardon, my lord, but I don't know." /imagines gen already training for the new management and teeping his last will to the central records keeper/ Jor-El stood talking with a small group of people. Kal needed only a split second to identify them. Lord Ra, Zara's esteemed father. Samm, Elle, and Luci Lyne, Lois' family. Oh look. Jor-El’s called them to inform them of their sad loss. She headed straight towards Kal, for in the few brief times that they had met, the two had instantly gotten along. Great. So she can marry him after Lois doesn’t make it back. "Who could have done this?" she replied, sniffling. Ky’e Griff. To Yman. Ma’ell Deer. Lenn Stok. Bilan Hurc. Scholar Jeff’son Col. Tempt Us. Kal returned the smile with a tiny one of his own, hoping the gesture would further console the girl. Don’t worry, Luci. I’ll marry you after the appropriate grief period of six hours. "But I don't want to speak of it in the open. We already know that Jen Mai was a traitor and a spy. I don't know who else might be." Also, walls could have ears. Found a signed confession. It read ‘Now your plaything is mine. Mwahahahaaha. Sincerely, Nor, Heir to Lux Uthor.’ Sadly, it was written before Lux decided to take Lois for himself. On second thought, burning Nor that way might cause him to rebel and return the bargaining chips to the bank. His voice was desperate, imploring Kal for some solid shred of evidence that could be used to justify a full-scale search of the Uthor's estate. Hello. Supreme Lord of all of Krypton. Just. Send. In. The. Troops. "A...dream?" Jor-El asked, his prior hope deflating before his son's very eyes. Also, he realized that his one remaining and legitimately claimed progeny is doing all sorts of drugs. "So...my daughter is missing because...Lord Nor Uthor is upset with you for besting him in a duel?" Lord Ra asked gently, “Yes. I’m very sorry, my lord Ra.” *twack* “Spares. Even when they’re not muddling the gene pool, they make trouble.” Nor holds grudges like you wouldn't believe. He’s rich. He had no further options in the social ladder. What else is he supposed to do with his spare time? He's always despised the fact that there are no daughters in this family that he could have been promised to, thereby granting his family a toehold into the ruling family. And Nor didn’t want to marry Ching and be the woman in the relationship? Or did Samm refuse to do the operation after reached his twelfth name day and it was clear Lux wouldn’t have any more suitable girls? "And what of Lord Uthor himself?" Zara's father asked. Kal couldn't be sure if Lord Ra believed him yet, or if he was merely humoring him. "Do you believe that he is also involved?" /shakes head/ No. It couldn’t possibly be. He *donated* a whole wing of the new girl’s orphanage. *And* he was willing to set up stipends for their later education in the Luxor Caregiving Center for the Rich and Noble. "Lux can't have anything to do with it," Samm said with certainty in his voice. "He wouldn't dare harm Lois. His son, Nor, is promised to Luci." (since there’s already another part waiting) Michael
