I'm afraid we are a little spoiled over here in the states. I live in a state where everything is fairly cheap (although it also means we don't make as much money). We rent our 1,000-square-feet one-bedroom apartment for around $800/month - and we think it's expensive and too small!
(Most of my friends have mortgages on real houses with land for less than what we rent this apartment for...I'm not sure why we still live here).
