Terry, I've just gotten caught up with "The Write Stuff" and have absolutely loved it. The pacing, your dialogue, just the overall flow of the story is fantastic. (I've also been laughing at myself for the past five minutes instead of giving you proper FDK because even though Ann mentioned Tom Wolfe earlier, and I'm even in the middle of "The Bonfire of the Vanities" right now, I *just* got the titular pun. Sleep deprivation is apparently taking its toll, or maybe I'm just senile at 22?)
Regardless, that's neither here nor there. The point is! Amazing storytelling.
This was comic brilliance:
Karen handed Lois a light brown folding wallet. “Here’s your badge. You are now fully authorized to snoop where you’re not wanted, poke your nose into other people’s business, and make a general nuisance of yourself in the pursuit of your duties.”
Lois grinned at her. “Now that sounds like a job description I can get my teeth into.”
Nice. Doesn't really deviate from Lois'
true job description. If the Major only knew ...
The conversation with Mark had me riveted, and I loved this:
“And you would’ve taken revenge if you’d had the chance?”
“Yes. But I didn’t. I was at work all shift last night, the night before that, and the night before that. I simply didn’t have the opportunity to kill him. Besides, I promised the Major that I wouldn’t kill him on the station.”
Hmm. All right. He's convinced me. I think.
And the Major's repeated admission of innocence is pointing straight to her ...
“You don’t think she’s a suspect?”
Karen’s eyes turned granite. “I already told you. The only person who I know for a fact didn’t murder Claude Guilliot is me.”
Hmm. Double hmm. I'm almost afraid to trust that instinct, though -- I feel like you've got a lot of surprises in store for your readers, Terry. Can't wait to read the next part!
