My understanding is that Lois did get the job right out of college (on the show anyway), but I assume that was because she had done an internship there. But it that canon? Or fanon?
In one ep from S4, Perry does say she started out as a research assistant, yep. I would guess she was an intern, too. In this case, she's trying to be a reporter from day one, though so he might not have hired her for that straight off the bat.
