Ouch.

How can Superman survive this? And even if he can, how can HIS MARRIAGE survive the fact that he spent so much time thinking about someone else? You know, I just had a thought. Do these mixed memories have anything to do with the time Superman kissed Lois?

And, of course we have the famous park bench scene. That had to be hard on both of them.
Clark, for obvious reasons, of course. He's watching his best friend fade away from him, as well as the woman he loves. And she grafitating to someone he knows is evil. And then she tells him she's not in love with him.

I have to say I feel more sorry for Lois at the park bench scene, though. She has to tell her best friend she's not in love with him. She knows that's hard, but she also needs to stay true to what she believes her heart is telling her.
This is probably based on my expriences, though. I've never been rejected, so while I can sympathize with Clark, I can't really feel his pain. But since I have had one of my best friends in love with me while I wasn't in love with him, I CAN feel Lois's pain. On one hand, you want to be true to yourself and not belittle love, so you can't lie and tell that person you are in love with them. On the other hand, he's your best friend, and you don't want to hurt him. And you want to keep him as a friend.

Of course, we all know that Lois IS really in love with Clark. But I really believe she doesn't see it right now. Notice how she didn't hestitate when. she told him she wasn't in love with him? (In canon or in this story.)

Quote
Lois tried to school her features. She did not want to hurt him, but that was unavoidable. Pulling her hands gently from his grasp, she stood up. “I love you too, Clark.” One look in his eyes, and she could tell he already knew where she was going with this. “You’re my best friend and the only partner I’ve ever actually liked working with. But… I don’t think of you that way. I’m so sorry.”
And then we have Superman kissing Lois again. "I love you, too." Double ouch. Of course, he does prevent Lois from saying yes...but I still don't see it as a good thing. I still stand by the explanation that Lois isn't ready to love someone attaiable, yet. By making Superman attaniable, it could blow up in his face.
And like I said before, this is going to hurt his marriage.
