Fiordland is more
southwest of Christchurch than just west. There is no direct road access to Fiordland from the West Coast (Westland) even though they are on the same side of the island. Although I suppose he could always fly in by helicopter from the Haast / Jackson Bay area of South Westland.
But from Christchurch I'd imagine he'd travel to Te Anau before heading into the hills, etc.
