I wonder if it will ever dawn on Clark that she said he'd "returned" for her. That really wouldn't make sense if, from Lois's POV, he'd been unconscious in the other room and she'd been rescued by Superman.
I can see it now. "Clark, you had to go save L.A.! I told you to go!" "But I still should have come back faster, or taken you out of there first or... uh, waitaminute, what did you say?" Lovely deer-in-headlights, or at least adorably confused look as he processes that she's figured him out and is two steps ahead of him.

I figured he instinctively moved to protect Lois and got surprised by rifle butt then had to fake unconsciousness.
You're right about the deer-in-headlights moment - Clark was so out of it he probably didn't realize he'd spilled the beans.
