Lois looked down at the summer intern applications on her desk. As city editor, she had to choose one of three applicants to work in the city room under her supervision. The first two candidates looked good. They were second year journalism majors with experience on their high school and college newspapers. The third applicant was the one she kept coming back to. He was a third year science student with extensive newspaper experience. Like the others, he had high school and college experience, but he had also worked on his local newspaper. He actually had several op ed pieces published in newspapers across the US about his summer travels and his experience in the big city. The articles showed insight and a sense of humour. In addition, he had investigated and proven financial corruption at Metropolis U's Student Council. Normally, she would not have second thoughts about hiring him. But this was different. Jose

Hope this hasn't been used already. ---------- She stood on a tennis court in the bright warm sun. A very warm sun. In fact, a hot sun. And she thought that it wouldn't take more than a rally or two and she would be sweating like a...forget that! Not a good metaphor; no, not a good metaphor at all. She saw that she held her trusty old tennis racquet in her hand and wondered <Why am I holding this? I haven't played tennis in years. Where am I? > ------------ c

Think this one is still on my massive 'to be read' list, but with that subject matter I'm going to take a guess and say it has to be Jude's tennis vignette. <G> Hang on...yup, Jude's Revelation, Anyone? A Smashing DiscoveryDarn, I had one of these in mind yesterday and now my mind has gone a complete blank as to what it was...be back soon... Well, can't remember what was in my head, but this is another favourite anyway and should be reasonably easy too. "Lois! Lady Lois . . . wait!"
Lois slowed her pace, turning reluctantly towards the speaker. "Hi, Cat," she said woodenly.
"Is it true?" asked Lady Catherine, breathless after her sprint to catch up to Lois, ". . . what they're saying? Has the King really asked permission to have your hand in marriage?"
"Asked," affirmed Lois sadly, "and granted."
"I can't believe it. After all this time! If I were to tell you the number of women who've set their caps for him - beautiful women, too - and he's never fallen for any of them. Lady Antoinette . . . the Earl Tailor's daughter . . . even Lord Lang's eldest, Lady Lana. It was said he had a preference for her once, but it came to nothing." She gave Lois a sly look. "I even took a shot at him myself . . . ." Lois nodded - *that* she could believe. Lady Catherine "took a shot" at *every* man.
"He's so handsome, too," Lady Catherine continued. "And the finest figure of a man I have *ever* seen. You won't mind producing an heir with *him*." She paused, suddenly noticing Lois's lack of enthusiasm.
"Don't you agree, Lois?" she asked. "You've seen him . . . ."
Lois nodded, although she hadn't "seen" him, not really, anyway. When the King of England and his court had come to Metropolishire, she had barely looked at any of them, her thoughts dominated by the man who had stolen her heart three weeks earlier. "Do you know anything about Sir Lancelot?" she asked. LabRat
Athos: If you'd told us what you were doing, we might have been able to plan this properly. Aramis: Yes, sorry. Athos: No, no, by all means, let's keep things suicidal.

Awww!! Without even looking it up, I have to guess that this is Shadowfax's hilarious farce, The Once and Future King. Loved it! And I miss Shadowfax... where are you??? This one should be easy... "One hundred and seventeen buttons," the Wedding Coordinator had pronounced with no small satisfaction, as she closed the last one. Between the bride's mom and herself, the "buttoning in" of Lois had taken a mere half an hour. During which the bride had stood quietly, mind racing, as each button further sealed her fate - locking her away from her former life, her former self, and her former...ummm...partner. Wendy

Yup, very easy one. That's CC's wonderful Lois Unbuttoned . This is probably quite easy too, but it totally cracks me up every time I read it. "Okay, Doctor Folk," said Lois, her pen poised expectantly over her notepad. "What can you tell me about this new drug? FDJ?"
"FDK," the man corrected her. He sighed. "It's not pretty, Ms. Lane. It's a thousand times more addictive than anything else on the market, and as far as we can tell, there's no cure."
Lois frowned at this. "No cure? There's no cure for cocaine, either." Saskia

Just discovered this one a few weeks ago Hypergirl by Crystal Wimmer. Okay, I'll be back as soon as I think of one...and here it is Lady Lois Laveney smiled wickedly at her own mannish appearance, reflected in the looking glass. She suddenly spun around and addressed her maid who was hovering near the door. "So what do think, woman? Would I pass for a man?" she asked in a deliberately gruff voice. Then, unable to help herself, she burst into giggles. Sara
