Or at least Lois not suffering from FRD...

Are there any stories that start out basically canon but when Clark bursts in to the space transport to save Lois she recognizes him immediately?

I know of a few where she had reason to recognize him. The Girl Next Door comes to mind. But I was wondering about something more canon than that.

It popped into my head today and it seemed like an interesting idea. I was just curious if it had been visited.

I'm afraid I don't know any such stories. But FWIW, Lois does not appear to have prosopagnosia. For example, she was able to recognize Trask immediately from a decades-old photograph in "Strange Visitor". That took some doing.

She didn't have "face blindness"; she just had "Clark blindness".

One of the things that I noticed on the show but which I've never seen discussed is Dean Cain's Oriental ancestry. His eyes without glasses have a slight almond-shaped cast to them, but with the glasses they appear rounder (at least, they do to me). Eye shape is one of the things we use to recognize people, and seeing someone for the first time after that person switches from glasses to contacts can be jarring, especially if the glasses are visually prominent.

It's as if everyone associated Clark's glasses with his face and mentally made them a part of him. I don't think Lois was stupid (either galactically or locally) for not making the connection. Even when she thought she was in love with Superman, she placed him in a completely separate mental and emotional slot in her mind where no one else resided, and since there was no comparison between Superman and any other man, she never compared Clark to Superman to see the similarities. It wasn't until Superman touched her with the same tenderness with which Clark had touched her that she made the connection.

Of course, Bob, you could read That One Great Love , (my latest offering) where Lois figures it out rather quickly. It's a rewrite of the pilot with some twists in it.

Well, I always thought it was very believable that people could see Clark and Superman as different people - especially Dean's Clark and Superman. So, no, I don't think Lois was galactically stupid. But I do think it took her a little long to figure it out because Clark / Superman sometimes "slipped" up.

It seems I recently read or maybe GE'd a story where Lois knew immediately, but I'm not at home so I can't check right now.

Thanks for the plug, Michael!

The idea of Lois seeing through Clark's disguise from the get-go has always been a favorite of mine, but alas, after devouring every single story in both the Fanfic archives and the nFic archives in my 18-month L&C fic binge, I don't recall reading one that played with that notion to my satisfaction either... hence my choice of that particular PlotBunny for my second significant L&C fic.

I'm tellin' ya, those PlotBunnies can get pretty vicious when they're neglect for so many long, dark years. The selection process ain't easy! I've prioritized the first several lengthy-fic PlotBunnies somewhat, but of course, that's all subject to change at the whim of the muse! :p

Anyway, I'm still hard at work on the next installment of Nobody's Fool, so hopefully I'll have it posted pretty soon. This is certainly an ambitious little romp... a chapter for each ep through the entirety of the first two seasons--oh, and I'll probably do one for the Season Three premiere just to wrap it all up in a pretty bow!

Love and hot fudge,
Bren Ren
