Hi, Great piece. That is a great idea. He’d spent a few more hours helping her pack up her stuff and prepare the apartment for her extended absence. He’d even gone so far as to put her fish in a plastic bag with water so he could care for them at his house. She hadn’t questioned just who was running the paper while he was there. She suspected he’d needed the time with her as much as she had needed him to be there. Someday, somehow, she’d find a way to pay him back for all the love he’d shown her.
Lois was on the plane headed in the direction of Smallville now. The only direction that made sense in her life anymore. The place where she could feel close to Clark, feel the comfort of his parents’ love, and hopefully, the place he’d come home to her. Poor Perry! He acts like a real father does. More ASAP, please. This is the father figure Perry that we've all come to know in fanfic. There were hints of it in the series, but fanfic has taken it to another level.
One small problem that I see. Perry mentions that '... right now it's just an unsubstantiated rumor...' . No, it's not. Lois was the one who publicly said that the baby was Superman's. It was part of her plan. So, if you wish to call it a rumor, it's a rumor started by the mother to be. Not too easy for Perry to explain away.

I have to disagree, Tank.
Lois said to Clark in a private conversation (which happened to take place in a somewhat public place) that the baby was Superman's. She offered no proof. She could have been wrong or lying. Also, since it was a private conversation, it would, in official terms, be hearsay.
So, it's a rumor based on a single overheard conversation with no solid proof to back it up. Perry, being EIC of a world-class newspaper, would certainly think in those terms.
I think, under the circumstances, "unsubstantiated rumor" is a fitting term.
Explaining it away and dealing with the public backlash are, of course, seperate issues which will have to be dealt with. Difficult, but not impossible. It wouldn't be the first time Superman has recovered his good name from a PR disaster.

When in doubt, think about penguins. It probably won't help, but at least it'll be fun.

I know I'm *really* late in responding. But I'm glad most of you seemed to like Perry and Lois's conversation. Tank - Glad to see you're reading. As far as what you've pointed out... duly noted... and, well... I'm not saying nuthin' else. Thank you Maria, Rachel, Tank, Paul, Jose, and Erica for your comments as always!! And thank you for bearing with me as RL attacks me from all sides. Sara
