Virginia, I love those grammar peeves; thanks for choosing them with me in mind. smile

You know you're a verbophile when you look at the affect/effect one and know that it is an oversimplification. "Affect" can also be a noun (with the meaning of "feeling"). Although m-w.com indicates that this sense of the word is obsolete, it is actually still used in scholarly circles. I remember reading articles in grad school about how one's affect could affect one's language learning.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled thread topic...

Yikes--bear with me...I'm editing my edit dizzy

Quote
quote:
"Strong women don't need a superhero to back her up, but it doesn't hurt to have one on speed dial."
I had made bold:

--should it read " A strong woman doesn't need a superhero to back her up, but it doesn't hurt to have one on speed dial" ?

but I also should have made a few more words bold blush . I should have posted:

--should it read " A strong woman doesn't need a superhero to back her up, but it doesn't hurt to have one on speed dial" ?

(also--now there'd be two 'doesn't's in the sentence...maybe one could be made into 'does not'?

The rest of my post was a-okay though party

Thanks, KatherineKent. That one came to me just as I was putting the final touches on the list. Glad you liked it. laugh

A strong woman can rescue herself, but it doesn't hurt to have a superhero on speed dial.

Does that sound better?

Since you asked, Virginia,
Quote
"FanFiction: After 20 years, my superhero can still beat up your superhero, but he's chooses to be better than that."
Change "he's" to "he."

Quote
"I prefer Chocolate to Rocky Road. Ask me why?"
The question mark should be a period, since you are instructing someone to ask you a question, you are not asking a question yourself. Alternately, the second sentence could be:

Ask me, "Why?"

But I think that is a lot more awkward.

Quote
"Evil Writer: I love to torture my favorite characters"
and

Quote
"Evil Reader: I love it when a writer tortures my favorite characters"
These both need periods at the end. There are actually several other items that also need periods, but I won't quote them individually here.

Quote
"The Hottest Team in Town! A woman in need of a hero and a man with glasses."
Should the exclamation point be a colon?

How about one more quote?

The math of superheroes: 1 + 1 = 1

Thanks for the corrections, Lynn. Umm... Are you sure your math shouldn't be 2 + 1 = 2 Or 1 + 1 + 1 = 2 ?

How about:

"LnC: The only triangle with two sides."

I had originally thought of 1 + 1 + 1 = 2, but I decided to simplify it.

Clark + Superman = 1 person; 1 + 1 = 1

Another possible saying:

If you're not a superhero, don't edit my copy!

(Note: This is not a commentary on your post, Virginia. I appreciate you asking for clarification. It's just another saying I thought might be cute.)

Or, less confrontationally phrased:

Only a superhero can edit my copy.

True, it is Clark, not Superman, who edits Lois' copy, but where's the humour in that?

I really like this one, too...(and even though it's Clark that edits the copy.) It's a nice link btw Clark/Superman clap

So many great choices!

The first poll to choose our Fundraising Slogans has been posted. I've divided the slogans into two categories (not quite divided down the middle but close to it): 1) FanFiction Specific / LnC Vague AND 2) LnC Specific. You can only choose up to ten in each category. I've set a deadline of voting for this first poll only until Tuesday midnight (as we haven't yet received even a rough timeline for the 2014 Fundraiser, so I wasn't sure just how time sensitive this is).

That's good, too, but it lacks a subtlety that mine had: Prescriptively speaking, the proper word should have been "may" in mine, not "can." People who are versed in the nuances of the two words will have a desired to correct my slogan -- in other words, to edit my copy. devil

I know it's too late to offer new ones, but I just thought of another one. LOL.

"Don't Jimmy my writing / reading time!"

or

"I hate it when real life Jimmy's my writing / reading time."

or

"I hate it when real life Jimmy Interruptus my writing / reading time." (This needs a Lynn beta job to make it sound right, I just know it. laugh )

It's too late to submit them to the official list, but I thought I'd share them for your enjoyment.

Since you asked, how about the following?

I hate it when real life pulls a 'Jimmy Interruptus' on my writing/reading time.
