What an amazing chapter, Wendy. I could feel the push and pull, and frustration and hurt being experienced by both. Very affecting. Can't wait for the conclusion.

Okay, first of all...you cheated! Yo were only supposed to have 1 more part.  Now, that was great but why didn't he tell her and rub salt into the wound? I love Clark giving it back to Lois and not backing down, but I like him loving her, too. Hurry back and fix these toys! 
I'm a firm believer in the fact that God doesn't put any more on us than we can bear. He does however make us come to Jesus every so often.

Wow, Wendy, this is great. I'm getting fed up with the agonizingly repetitive behaviour of these two characters - Clark jealously guarding his secret, setting his other persona up as a rival for Lois's affection, and then getting furious with Lois for falling for Superman!!! And then Lois fawning over Superman, being totally blind to what and who he really is. These two so need to be shaken out of their abject stupidity! A little anger is a good thing if it can make some cobwebs fall from your eyes. Yes!!! Keep it coming! I sure hope Lois can put two and two together after being chewed out by Superman!

Round two... *ding* He hadn’t answered her accusation. He’d just kept flying, his face averted from hers, his expression impassive. And it was pretty damn obvious what his intention was. He was taking her home. He’d bring her back to her apartment, set her down, bid her goodnight and fly away. He’d made up his mind about her and he had no intention of revising it.  Maybe, now, she could understand how he did it. Awwwwww!!!! That's... that's so sweet!! But she still needs to realize (and so does Clark) that she's a huge part of what recharges him  ) “Gone?”
He sighed. “It exploded. I don’t know any more than that. It happened... years ago. I was just an infant.” Ooh... lots more than he's said before. And... are you ready? Babble time. <g> This really says something... Clark's probably still upset and angry, still would rather not have Lois know anything more about Superman so he can better prove his point (not to mention it's safer to guard his heart that way), but this... His irritation with her kind of bleeds away just a bit for this because it still really bothers him. It's still raw, though well-buried. And... it's just really sweet that he doesn't hesitate to share this with Lois even when he's so angry with her. Homeless, too, until he’d come to Earth. Where had he been all those years? Drifting around in space? How long had it been, anyway? How old was he now? In human appearance, he looked to be something between twenty-five and thirty, but that was meaningless. Who knew how Kryptonians aged? He could be the equivalent of a thousand years old - or he could be around ten.
Put that way... there was a lot she didn’t know about him. Awww. So true, Lois. But... if you're thinking along these lines, *he* doesn't know that much about him. <g> His planet. Gone.
Was that what drove him to keep saving humans from the consequences of humanity’s own mistakes? *gasp* Awwwwwww!!! (<-- I did this out loud ) This was going from bad to worse. Any moment now, she was going to tell him how well she understood him again. That she knew how lonely he was. That she knew he needed comfort... Awwwww. God, poor Clark!! ...and she was going to offer it. And he's hating it because he wants nothing more than to accept it.  He turned away. “Lois, I thought you had something important you wanted to talk about. Unless you do, then I’m going to take you home. I don’t have all night.”  He needs a cardiac band-aid. Now, even if it killed him, he had to convince her that she didn’t love him. Even if it made her hate him in the process... even as part of him was starting to hate her. Gah! Just stab me in the heart, Wendy. Honestly.  She couldn’t see what was right under her nose. Swore up and down that she loved Superman, would love him if he were an ordinary man, yet rejected that ordinary man outright when he laid his heart at her feet. You know I love this.  And... I just love the connotation of "swore up and down". He spun around to face her. “Yes, I think you’re shallow.” *GASP* (<-- Did that out loud too) But well deserved!!!! Have I mentioned before that I love angry Clark? Adore him, really. It's... I think it's his most powerful emotion. Yes, his love and compassion and everything else is almost unfathomable on the grand scale of things, but his anger... that's something he keeps a very tight rein on. Not just because a Superman with a bad temper would be dangerous, but because that's who Clark is. Intrinsically good, respectful, etc. So this makes his anger more emotionally driven than most, not impulsive at all. Clark has to be really hurting on a deep level, so much that he can't keep a hold of that control he always has over it, and it slips. So... what I meant to say was... "Awwww!! Poor Clark!! I can tell he's hurting!! " “Really? Not fair, is it?” He gave her a level stare. “How about this, then. Today, you turned down the love of... someone you know.” *GASP* (<-- that too) Oooh!!! OOH!! She's gonna be pissed that Clark told Superman. <g> You hurt him and you didn’t even care. Mega ouch factor. “Your contingency plan. Lex Luthor. Or am I wrong in assuming that the only thing preventing you from accepting his proposal was needing to know if...” He paused for a second, then quoted her, a sardonic tinge to his voice. “If there’s any hope for us.” Ack!! This hurts! tbc...

A faint hint of guilt stabbed him. He’d never spoken to anyone so harshly before, and never imagined that he would to her. But... she deserved it. Every word he’d said was true. I agree!!!  I. LOVE. THAT. And... I think I've already gone on enough about why.  Then she’d insisted that they needed to talk... and her refusal to react the way he’d wanted - expected - had just triggered something in him. Anger. Rage. A need to wound, the way she’d wounded him. Oooh! I like this! That emotion triggered in him. And the "refusal to react the way he's wanted" that's... well, that's so un-Clark-like, but it fits. He wants to lash out. His plans didn't go the way he expected, which only served to hurt him worse... and... no kidding that would trigger the rage. (That he doesn’t realize is partially at himself because he's the strongest man in the world, and he can't get her heart to budge one inch. ) You don’t even realize how well you've got the characterization down, do you? That's... I'm jealous. ;P tbc... again...

Wendy... Okay... this has never happened before... and I'm a bit scared, actually... You know that Word template I have for feedback? Four full pages of [ quote] [ /quote]? Yeah? Well... I ran out. I've hit the end of the document. No more quote thingies. That's... just wrong. Isn't it? I mean... I have needed to use 3 separate posts for one feedback thread once... but... I've never run out of quote thingies... Moving on... because, yes, there's more And Lois was still blind.
It was crazy, but part of him, over the past year, had actually hoped that she’d figure it out for herself at some stage. Because there was that part of him that wanted her to know. And, too, because she was a great reporter. Lois working it out would have restored his faith in her investigative abilities, faith which had been badly damaged by her complete inability to see through Lex Luthor. I think... all that's needed here is a This would be the final time he’d fly with her, other than if he had to rescue her. From now on, Superman was definitely staying well away from Lois Lane. Breaking my heart!! You know... This only makes it hurt worse! Where's part 3??  Sara (who's going to run an hide now because she's embarrassed at how long this one was... )

Oy. Yeah, I'm still wincing here. They're both saying a lot of things to hurt each other. Clark especially! I understand it, but still. But now that Clark made that little slip, will Lois connect the dots? Can't wait for the next part... and glad to see there is one!

His mouth tightened. “That you know nothing about me at all, Lois. That when you said you’d still love me even if I were an ordinary man...” His hands formed into fists once more. “You were lying. Because I am an ordinary man, and you don’t.”  You can feel his relief with just the etchings of his bitterness about the situation, too, in these few words. There's so much here to write about but I really would be writing what everyone here already has written! Wendy, I'm in constant awe of your talent, and this story's got me! My god, you are good! I LOVE IT! I am going to read that section again, that begins w/ that first quote! Hehe ~NICOLE ps- might part 14 be on its way for your OTHER amazing, fantastic, lovely, excruciatingly angsty story also currently residing on the boards???

Yes, I know I have commented a bit already, but honestly... this is so brilliant. This is the essence of Lois and Clark. Or rather, this is the essence of Lois and Clark and Superman, the love triangle of three people who are really two. The star-crossed lovers who have been taking one step forwards and two steps back in their relationship for 67 years, since Siegel and Shuster created them back in 1938. You don't know me, Lois... How true that is. And you so needed to vent some of your rage at her, Clark. Or Superman. Or whoever you really are. But can you blame her for not knowing you? It's not as if you've actually tried to tell her. Look at how you react when you have *almost* told her: He was safe. He hadn't destroyed himself after all.
And Lois was still blind. Clark, you are killing me! And Wendy, you'd better let Lois figure out Superman's secret identity quickly and then let her tell him a few choice words. God knows he needs to hear them. Aah, and then, you know, you can make them kiss and make up! All in one short chapter! More soon, Wendy. I can't wait! Ann

Wow!! I'm astonished and delighted at the wonderful response to this story! - and so there'll be a fourth. Not quite sure when that will be posted - I have to write it yet and I want an appropriate date. But part 3 is coming up shortly. I should add that this story hasn't been beta-read. Sara has very kindly let me paste some sections to her on IRC and she's told me what she thinks, but that's not a substitute for full BRing - therefore, if there's stuff that needs fixing or doesn't make sense please do tell me! Oh, and speaking of Sara, I have to add: that section, where Clark reflects that Lois is still blind and he's disappointed in her for failing to see through his disguise, is all thanks to Sara. She commented, when I showed her that section, that he might well feel disappointment that she - such a good reporter - couldn't see what was right under her nose. It was a fantastic insight and I just had to use it. Sara, you have such great ideas! Thanks so much again, everyone, for your wonderful comments.  Wendy
