This was so well-written, and ultimately so, so heart-breaking.
And this, in particular:
Reaching into his suit pocket, he pulled out two small rings. ... Staring at them, he knew they could never belong to another. He couldn’t keep them, he couldn’t sell them. It was all just too much to bear.
Ack! It just got me right *there.* Of course Clark can't keep them or sell them — he has to bury them with his wife, because her rings are such a raw, shattering reminder of what he's lost.
