I, too, am fascinated by this. I'm not entirely happy with Clark for proposing to Mayson. Not now, now that he is not only dreaming about Lois, but now that he has found proof that she exists for real, too. And not only that, but he couldn't stop himself from flying to New York to see her! And he not only saw her, but he spoke to her too! I loved this:
Clark knew that he should just leave. He should go back home, back to his life and forget about her. This was sure to only complicate his already complex existence. But he just couldn’t tear himself away. On the contrary, he found himself beginning to move almost as if it were someone else moving him, like a puppet. He felt his body float down into the alleyway between the buildings and spin out of his suit. He went along, helpless to fight it, as his body walked around the corner towards the entrance to the Daily Bugle. He watched in fascination as his body led him directly into the path of Lois Lane as she walked out of the building.
This is great! Clark's mind tells him he should leave, but his body won't let him. I love it!
And then Lois somehow recognizes Clark, too, so that it's not just Clark who recognizes Lois. (How could he know Lois from his dream, by the way, when he didn't see her face there?) Anyway, I really liked this "first meeting" between them (except it can't have been their first meeting!!!):
“Ooof!” she exclaimed as they bumped shoulders. “Hey, watch where you’re going!”
“Oh, excuse me! I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying any attention. Are you all right, Miss...? he asked, pausing expectantly.
“Lane. And no I’m not all right,” she said looking over at her shoulder and rubbing it. “I’m gonna have a bruise there tomorrow. What’s your shoulder made out of, steel?” she asked him, seeming irritated.
Clark could barely hide his smile. Well yes, actually, it kinda is, he thought. He stood there staring at her, mesmerized by this woman who’d taken control of his dreams. She was smoothing out the jacket of her pale blue suit when she finally made eye contact with him. Her eyes narrowed slightly and she frowned at him.
“Do I know you?” she asked.
“I don’t think so, but you do seem very familiar.”
“Well of course *I* do. I’m the top reporter for the Daily Bugle. You’ve probably seen me on the billboards all over town,” she replied smartly. “But where have I seen you? Do you work around here?” she asked.
Hah! I love Lois's confidence here. Of course she feels he ought to recognize her... but why does *she* seem to know *him*? (Psst, Lois, it's because the two of you are soulmates, and the universe is determined to bring you together.... How's that?
)
And Clark likes her assertiveness. How could he not? You don't fight the forces of the cosmos, Clark!
This woman was a very *take charge* kind of a gal, wasn’t she? Clark liked her instantly.
“No, actually I’m here to...take in a few sights,” he said, wishing he could come up with a better explanation.
“Really? Well maybe you should pay more attention to where you’re going and not what you’re here to see. Just a little friendly advice. Have a nice time while you’re here Mr...? I didn’t catch your name.”
“I didn’t give it. It’s Kent. Clark Kent.”
Kent. Clark Kent. It sure sounds as good as Bond, James Bond, doesn't it?
“Hmm, Kent,” she paused and seemed to be contemplating his name. “Well, have a nice time in New York, Mr. Kent.”
“Clark.”
“Okay, Clark. If you’ll excuse me, I’ve gotta get going,” she said, starting to walk away.
“Of course, nice having met you, Ms. Lane.”
She paused in her departure and looked back at him. “Lois. Yeah, after the initial jolt, I guess it was nice to meet you, too. I’d say see you around, but New York is a big city. Don’t let anyone hustle you. Bye, Clark.”
Yess!!! She likes him too! Ah, but she can't fight the forces that make her like him, (such as him and her and the way the two of them fit together like two halves that make the most beautiful whole), honestly she can't!
Clark nodded his head at her in farewell. Goodbye, for now, he thought.
Yes, Clark, what you said. Goodbye
for now. But then Clark insists on proposing to Mayson, and I can't quite understand him here. All right, I
can understand certain things, I really can. I thought this was really beautiful:
They had been seriously dating for well over a year now. There wasn’t a *spark* there like he had read about some other couples having. But there was a deep love and affection, and definitely a physical attraction.
There are so many worse reasons to get married than because you feel this way for another person. And you really do manage to show the love and affection that Clark and Mayson feel for one another. I loved the sweetness of this scene:
At that action, the waiter reappeared with a bottle of wine and a beautifully arranged bouquet of red roses, which he placed on the table off to one side. Behind him came two other men, one carrying a violin and the other a cello.
Mayson looked at Clark, surprise showing in her eyes. “You didn’t,” she whispered, and then the violinist and cellist began to play Mozart’s Violin Concerto number three. The first time Clark had brought Mayson to Sergio’s, over a year ago, they had heard the musicians playing this song in the background. She loved it, she had said.
Clark watched her contentedly as she listened to the hauntingly beautiful music. Moisture was beginning to form in her eyes, and a tender smile graced her face.
But as much as Clark really does love Mayson, he shouldn't have done this. His heart, or mind, or whatever, tells him that he shouldn't:
But, as special as this moment was for her, he felt the guilt in his heart.
He had done this for her, to make her happy because she loved him. And he loved her; but if he truly did, then why could he not stop thinking about Lois Lane? Why did his mind keep drifting back to a woman he didn’t even know?
If you dream about a woman whose very existence you were unaware of, then read her name on a name plaque in your dream, then find out that this woman exists for real, then find yourself inexorably drawn to her, then meet her and like her and find that she almost instantly likes you too, then can't stop thinking of her while you are planning to propose to another woman... well, take a hint already, Clark. It's not normal to have dreams like that, I swear it isn't. The universe itself is trying to tell you something. And what it's saying is that you and Mayson are not meant to be. You and Lois are.
Unlike Andreia, I'm not totally convinced that Mayson really said no to Clark's proposal. Clark may think she did, but it could well be that after a little while, maybe quite soon, she may have decided that she wants you after all. What are you going to tell her then, Clark?
Well! I may not approve of Clark's decision to propose to Mayson, but I still find this totally fascinating - including the situation his proposal has created. And I love this story!
