So it was Tempus. I should have guessed. (Though admittedly the whole thing still seems a little alternative reality to me. How can Lois and Clark have two sets of memories about what has happened to them? How can Lois have left the Daily Planet before Clark ever arrived there, while at the same time remembering her "true" life with Clark?)

So is it still Tempus who's behind everything? Is he the one who made that bomb go off when Lois put her key in that lock?

(Oh, and... this is where I'm supposed to go off my rocker, right? This is where I'm supposed to start ranting and raving and.... But I remember your full WHAM warning, so I will not.)

But now Clark has been saddled with a terrible, terrible choice. He can build that time machine whose blueprints he remembers from his dream, go back in time and save Lois. Only if he does that, Mayson will die.

It seems to me that if Clark goes back in time, knowing that Mayson is about to be killed, he could put her under super-surveillance for a while and protect her. I guess you're telling me that if he goes back in time, he won't remember what's going to happen to Mayson.

Well, Clark has no choice really. He must save Lois. (And I think it could be argued that he has to save H.G. Wells, too.) There is nothing for it: he will have to go back in time, rectify the messed-up timeline, save Lois and H.G. Wells, and doom Mayson. Because the time is out of joint: O cursed spite, that Clark's the one that has to set it right again, whatever it will cost!

Horrible, DJ. I really feel sorry for Mayson. (And for Clark too, of course!) Hmmm... are you going to let him talk to Mayson before he goes back in time? Guess not. What could he say? Sorry, Mayson, but the time stream has been messed up, and I'm going to put it right again. Only that means that you are going to die.... Oh horror!

(Perhaps he could say, "Mayson, I'm so sorry. I've just learnt that the time stream has been tampered with, and I'll have to put it right. Only I don't think you and I are going to be together in the corrected timeline. I don't even think you and I are really meant to be together at all. But please remember this: I do love you.")

This is so sad, DJ. But it's still so fascinating. Hmmm... would it be all right for you to post the final part a little sooner than you'd planned to?

Ann

Hi - I'm new to posting on the board. I read the first four chapters last night and went to bed thinking how can Clark consider changing time back if it means killing Mayson. The way you set up the moral dilemma was very realistic as was Clark's reaction. I can't wait until tomorrow for the final chapter. Thanks for the great story.

Ann - as always I appreciate your wonderful feedback. Thank you for not beating me over the head after you read Lois' death scene. I was worried blush You asked so many good questions and brought up so many good points that I fear you are trying to read my mind. wink Where did I put that aluminum foil cap? (The one Lois wore to keep Aliens from reading her mind). Hee hee. laugh

As for posting early, mmm, we'll see, but probably not - don't you know anticipation is half the fun? smile1

Whamm, whamm, wildguy devilsplat

<deep breath> <exhale> Lois or Mayson, Clark has to do it. He'll hate himeself but he has to do it.

Pity he can't build the machine, load Mayson in it and have her help him reset the time line, and have it somehow work out so that she lives.

I helped beta this story and, trust me, I pleaded with DJ on multiple occasions that Clark had to save Mayson. DJ very carefully explained all the different scenarios she had worked out to me. In the end, she picked the one we all can live with...

Those aren't tears, I have allergies. mecry The angst is particularly bad this time of year.

Lois: You know, I have a funny feeling that you didn't tell me your biggest secret.

Clark: Well, just to put your little mind at ease, Lois, you're right.

dance I can't believe you didn't even give me a hint at what it would be though? Are you trying to torture me? Oh...ahem, I guess it's not like I didn't do my fair share of that. blush

Okay, well since Ann asked so nicely, and LLWB has me waiting on pins and needles...I'll try to get the final part posted tonight, before I head off to find the sandman. No promises, but I'll try.

Thank you everyone for all your feedback on this story and your encouragining comments. I've been on a fdk high laugh I'm a little sad I only have one part left. I hope you all enjoy and it lives up to the story.

Oh, good, Framework4 - I was hoping I wouldn't lose you on that WHAM laugh Glad to see you're still with me. As far as Mason goes...well, I guess you'll just have to read on...

And Sue, you were wonderful by the way, thank you for looking at all those continuing little changes I made and things I added in...even if you haven't seen season 4 laugh Now maybe you'll at least want to watch one or two of the episodes. wink

Mayson is toast.

Tank (who never hated Mayson, but always liked her better on "Wings")
