Finally, Rac, here is some feedback.
I very, very much appreciated the scene with Lois, Jimmy and Perry. There was such warmth, familiarity, friendship and trust here. These people know each other, love each other... but one of them is carrying a burden much heavier than the other two, and she won't share everything she feels with them:
"Thanks." She gave them a smile that didn't reach her eyes before opening the door and walking out.
That was so poignant: she smiles, but the smile doesn't reach her eyes.
But Perry and Jimmy are wonderful friends. I loved Jimmy's musings. You made Lois look so beautiful through his eyes, Rac. Jimmy could see that Lois is physically beautiful, of course, but these days he can see the beauty of her heart and soul even more clearly. And of course, Jimmy's ability to appreciate Lois for these things, and his own humble, unspoken, (or "un-thought-of") commitment to fight for the same ideals as Lois, and to be there for her and be the best friend he can to her, makes Jimmy look so beautiful in his mind and heart, too.
As for Lois, not only can't she truly speak to Jimmy and Perry about everything she feels, but she can be even less frank and honest with the Kents. I feel so sorry for both Lois, Martha and Jonathan. Lois is trying to "protect" her in-laws by keeping much of her life a secret from them. This, of course, is what we so often saw Clark do to Lois. It doesn't work; you only hurt your loved ones worse by shutting them out, by telling them that they just don't have it in them to be there for you and share your sorrows. Oh, well - but it was lovely to see that sweet scene between Lois and Jon.
It felt really strange to me to suddenly meet Constance Hunter in this story - as if she had just stepped out of Terry's current fic, where she figures so prominently! But I very, very much approved of Lois's decision to give away the money she's going to get from the Nobel Prize Committee and give that money to the people in Kinwara with the help of Constance Hunter.
As for Clark's situation, I'm feeling really nervous about that trial. Again it is so strange, as if this story is a sort of counterpart to Terry's fic. In this story, Clark is the most important witness for the prosecution, and he mustn't fail, or that monster of evil, Lord Nor, may be let loose on Krypton again. In Terry's story, Superman himself is on trial, and he is going to take the witness stand as a witness for the defence. He'd better not fail, or he may end up in prison.
I can't help feeling that more is at stake in this story than in Terry's, though. Tragedy might strike more ruthlessly here. In Terry's story, the really bad guy has already been disposed of - he is dead, in fact, which is why Superman is on trial in the first place. But in your story, Lord Nor is alive and unbroken, and there seems to be a real possibility that he might be acquitted. And that spider of evil, Rae Et, is on the loose, unbeknownst to everyone, and she is spinning her horrible webs of malice.
You did an excellent job, sir," Ching said as he sat down across from him at the library table.
Clark smiled somewhat weakly. "Thanks," he managed. He couldn't believe how exhausted he was, how psychologically draining the entire experience had been. "But I'm only half way there."
"You will do fine on the cross examination, sir," Ching assured him in that confident tone he used when he was certain of everything and in complete control of a situation.
Ching seems so certain that everything will turn out all right, that the prosecution has already won the case. You make me feel, instead, that everything can go horribly wrong. I worry for everyone's safety - Clark's, Ching's, Enza's, Lok Sim's... Talan's?
I absolutely loved Clark's dream at the end of this chapter. It was so full of love, but also so full of understanding and insight... and sadness and loss. Lois's sadness in Clark's dream was so achingly similar to the depression Lois seemed to feel in much of this chapter. Oh, please, Rac. Let Clark and the others win the trial. Let all the good people come out of it safe and sound. And please, please let Clark come home to Lois soon.
