Ahh! Shayne you snuck up on me. I knew I should have paid attention in the channel. LOL Loved it! So the question is now... will she stay and talk to him or will she run away and be patient for 10 years? Haha... I think we all know the answer to that one. I can't wait to see her reaction when she finds out about him being superman though. She can't be mad at this Clark cause well... he isn't the one who kept it from here. Poor girl doesn't know what she is in for. I can't wait for more. ^_^

Wow, I just spotted this story tonight. It's a FASCINATING premise! I'm so looking forward to more.
Regarding Lois...well it depends! Right now it's of course really mature to recognize that their time isn't for another 10 years. But knowing what she knows...will she really be able to resist Clark? We already know Clark's fallen like a rock for her <g>. Are they going to rock the timeline?

I read this last night but didn't have time to comment. As Shadow says, she's really mature to realize that she and Clark aren't supposed to get together for 10 years, but in her old timeline she lost him. Now she's 17 (with all the hormones that go with it) and he's 18 and *alive*. I doubt we can really expect her to stay away from him for 10 years. As long as he's not doing super feats and getting himself involved in things too soon, maybe he and she can stay alive and save the future, exact timeline notwithstanding.

This is a completely fascinating premise. Lois is on a mission; she has to save the life of Clark Kent. But she is also a woman who for two years has felt like a "widow" - if I remember the previous two parts correctly she had never actually married him before he died in her original timeline - but after his death, she realized that Clark Kent had been the center of her life, even the reason for her existence.
Now Lois is a frighteningly mature and supernaturally "knowledgeable" teenager, a young woman with an, at the start, almost exact knowledge of her own future. However, the longer she stays in her new timeline, the more it will deviate from her original one, and the more the entire timeline she has come to will be affected. We are talking about the second law of thermodynamics, which is actually a movement into greater chaos and less predictability, and this in turn is the reason why the arrow of time always carries us inexorably forward. (Enough rambling.)
So the longer Lois stays in her new timeline, the less she will know about what is going to happen in it. The future will eventually become as unknowable to her as it is to us (or pretty much so).
And as others have already pointed out, Lois and Clark have already fallen for each other like a ton of bricks in this timeline. Will Lois really stay away from Clark for another ten years so as not to disturb "the proper timing" of things? Not willingly, no. Not unless you, Shayne, do something to keep young Lois and Clark forcibly apart.
I have to say that I absolutely loved how you showed us, in this chapter, how Clark just instantly recognized this very young woman whom he is destined to love. And I also loved, of course, how Lois was so powerfully affected by seeing and hearing him.
This is very, very beautiful and totally fascinating.

Still here, still loving it and following avidly. Although I'm a bit confused about the original timeline. Clark died after the Nightfall incident, am I right? If so, how can Lois not know he was also Superman? Also, Nightfall happened only about half an year into their partnership. Lois ruminates that it took them "years" to build up their relationship. What did I miss?
“Is he dead, Lois?”
“No! But I was really mad and I wanted to kick him between the legs and pull his nose off and put out his eyes with a freshly sharpened pencil and disembowel him with a dull letter opener and strangle him with his own intestines but I stopped myself just in time!” - Further Down The Road by Terry Leatherwood.

Hi, Great part! “Are you all right, miss?”
Lois closed her eyes for a moment, then accepted his hand. He pulled her up easily, and Lois’s hand tingled where he’d touched her.
He didn’t release her hand until several moments after he should have.
“Are you all right?”
Part of her felt as though nothing could be more right. The rest of her worried that nothing was ever going to be all right again. Beautiful! More ASAP, please. MAF

Awww I love this part! I'm so glad Clark caught her before Lois got a chance to leave. Can't wait for more.

I'm sorry I haven't commented before, but I am greatly enjoying this story. Lois has been given an opportunity so many of us would love to have--the chance to go back to a certain point in our lives and use our acquired wisdom to reshape our history.
In this case, Lois gets the opportunity to reverse a horrible mistake--failing to recognize and respond to the man she fell in love with. In so doing, she gets to modify history--to save not only his life, but also the planet itself.
How will a 28 year old Lois react to an 18 year old Clark? She loves him, of course, and feels an immediate connection (as does he). However, the man she fell in love with is a man shaped by experiences Clark hasn't yet enjoyed--traveling the world, learning his craft, saving people surreptitiously, etc. She must be careful not to expect too much too soon, regardless of his exceptional nature.
There is also the problem of changing history, as previous posters noted. It is impossible to predict with any certainty how a modification to even one decision will affect the future, much less to understand the impact of a radical altering of the time line.
I'm interested to see how this plays out!

Somehow, the radio station had decided to play nothing but country music…old style country music. An unending diet of Hank Williams and Patsy Kline.
“I’m so lonely I could die.”
Lois groaned. This trip was going to feel like it lasted forever. Oh, I remember those long trips before CDs and Tapes(even 8 track!) where the only radio station you could find were hog markets or depressing country music. Now, don't get me wrong. I like some country music, but some of it is soooo depressing!!! But in the wake of the panic overtaking the planet phone lines had been down and airports congested. Lois hadn’t been able to risk not being able to get back in time to make the trip. Its not nice to temp your readers... Lois slipped on her favorite burgundy blouse and the leather jacket her grandmother had gotten her for Christmas. Ooh, Lois's Grandma buys nice clothing. I only got plaid shirts... A girl was staring at him. She wasn’t anyone he’d seen before, but she was beautiful. Slender, with a long neck and long brunette hair. She was staring at him with a stricken look on her face.
She was beautiful.
He gasped. It was if a world which had always been in black and white was suddenly in color.
So this was love. Ahh isn't it grand. Looking forward to more soon. James

When I awoke this morning trying to figure out the sequence of events prior to Lois' journey back in time, I realized that it was time to vacate lurkdom and provide some feedback. Shayne, I love your writing style and I'm enjoying the premise of this story for so many reasons. I am also completely intrigued and frustrated at the tiny clues you've left as to how Lois (and the world) ended up in this situation. For instance, you hinted in part 2 that Clark died just after expressing his love for Lois. How did Clark die and why as Clark and not as Superman? Did Lex succeed in killing Clark after trapping Superman in the Kryptonite cage? How did Lois learn that Lex was a criminal if Clark wasn't around to investigate him? What has put the world in jeopardy? What kind of cataclysmic event would effect the earth but take another 18 months to destroy it? I'm anxious to see how Lois handles meeting young Clark. Knowing Lois, she'll want to keep in contact with him (for the same reason that she couldn't wait to contact him) and further change both their timelines. It'd be interesting if Lois slipped and mentioned Superman to a younger Clark. Not knowing that they are the same person, she could explain that Superman is an alien from Krypton with the ability to fly, x-ray/heat vision, super strength, invulnerability (except for Kryptonite), etc. Since Lois knows more about Clark's origins than he does, his reaction might precipitate a conversation where Lois tells him who she really is and why she sought him out. How would an earlier debut of a superhero affect the world? So many wonderful possibilities ... Like James, I love time travel and can't wait to see this story unfold. More soon, please! BJ

I second everything Ann (TOC) said and, like Hasini said, I'm still here and still loving it.
Goodness, I certainly do have imaginative FDK today, don't I?

This is so fabulous, I can't tell you. I had a terrible time waiting for lunch so I could take the time to read it.
However, that said, I think I'm going to have to back off from this for a little while. I'm also reading & enjoying That Charming Smallville Hospitality, which also has teen-aged Lois & Clark and I don't want to get them muddled. Keep on writing, though; I want to have a lot of good stuff to catch up on!

I'm with BJ. When James and I were discussing this over dinner, oh so long ago, he wondered how Clark had died and I told him how obvious it that he had been killed by Lex before Lois's near-wedding.
I hope that Lois gets everything she wants from this trip. It's going to spend her several days to drive halfway across the country and she'll have to spend the same amount to come back. Since we know she doesn't want to lose her internship and we know that Clark needs to get back to Wichita, that won't leave her with a lot of time.
I remember the country music very clearly, as well. My dad traveled for a living, and he always talked about listening to "a sad cowboy" all the way across Illinois--which is a long trip if you travel from tip to tip.
I love the meeting. I love how Lois has second thoughts and I love how meaningless her second thoughts are. Clark has already fallen for her.
