Well, I'm still mad at Clark for saying the things he did, but it's lucky Lois is more forgiving (or feeling guiltier) than I am. Glad we skipped all the angst and angry drama that might have otherwise resulted.

I don't really have time to quote right now, but it's heartbreaking to see how they both want the same thing - to be together and never let go again - but absolutely can't because both are afraid to say what they really want. It's like being separated by the thinnest and flimsiest of walls but not knocking it down because neither of them know that they can find the other on the other side of the wall. Does that make sense?

Why did Martha have to knock right then? thumbsup

“Is he dead, Lois?”

“No! But I was really mad and I wanted to kick him between the legs and pull his nose off and put out his eyes with a freshly sharpened pencil and disembowel him with a dull letter opener and strangle him with his own intestines but I stopped myself just in time!”

lol Ah, Lois. You've thrown away so many things - all your ice cream, Clark... It's going to be a lot harder to run down to the market and replace your best friend.

DJ, you already know how freakin' frustrated I am with both of them right now. They need to just open up and engage in a little full disclosure. <sigh> How you love to torture people. It's sick, really.

OUCH! Man, that one hurt. I gasped right along with Lois.

And I still want to slap them both. Really, really hard. Idiots.

Lois: You know, I have a funny feeling that you didn't tell me your biggest secret.

Clark: Well, just to put your little mind at ease, Lois, you're right.

Oh how sad and sweet at the same time. I'm glad they are talking and hopefully their time apart will only make them stronger OR he could decide to stay and they could throw their arms around each other and never let go. laugh

Aww, don't worry about the multiple posts! They made everyone smile.

She suddenly wished there were four messages. Obviously he didn’t mean to call back after that last one. Lois fidgeted a little and looked up at her front door. She didn’t really want him to leave like this.
Come on Clark! Only three messages?! Where is Groveling!Clark? I very much like him. smile

Quote
She owed him a better goodbye than what she had given him.
Yes!

Quote
He could feel the warmth of her palm where it lay pressed against his skin and it was sweet torture. Then her thumb pulled against the skin next to his stitches and it *was* torture.
That line was so funny! Wonderful job of incorporating a little humor into such a bleak picture.

Quote
Clark was completely speechless as he watched Lois close the distance between them and wrap her arms around him. She hugged him gently and whispered in his ear, “And I’m so glad you’re okay.”
*sighs happily*

Quote
With the Daily Planet gone and me out of work, there’s nothing to keep me here right now.” Nothing but you, he added silently.

Lois’s breath caught in her chest. There was nothing to keep him here. Not even her.
Argh! Clark you are such a *lunkhead*

Quote
Lois smiled, pleased with herself. She moved her hands lower, kneading the flesh through his shirt as she went. It would be more effective if he didn’t have a shirt on, but she was too embarrassed to ask him to take it off.
Woo! Take it off Clark!

Quote
“Do I? You told me just a few short weeks ago that you didn’t share my feelings. Then you told Superman that you’d love him even if he was an ordinary guy – but you didn’t love the ‘ordinary guy’.” He looked away from her sadly and glanced down at his lap. “You already told him that you didn’t.”
Awww to confront her now, when his feelings are still so rough. Ouch on both sides.

Quote
And that was true. He wasn’t sure why, but the thought of her staying here, at his apartment... it just made him feel better about leaving.
...Just think how much better you'd feel if you stayed there too Clark!

Quote
“You really need to come back and visit us again soon. I promise I won’t wear a dress while you’re there.”
Jonathan. sloppy I love Clark's parents, lol.

“Goodbye,” Clark whispered after her and then wondered again why he had decided to go to Kansas.
You and me both, buddy!

Hi everyone!!! <me waves>

I'm so glad you all enjoyed my little mishap this morning. Heh. I was afraid people were going to come after me with sharp object. LOL.

Hi Hasini! First again! smile

Quote
What a very sad chapter! Stupid, stubborn Clark! Silly Lois! [Whinging]
LOL. Yes, I know. But hang in there... by about part 10, I think you'll love me (I hope). <bg> Thank you so much for the fdk and I'll get the next chapter out timely, I promise.

Hi Jojo!

Quote
I'm sure you are gonna to do all you can to torture us and poor Lois and Clark.
Who me? <looks around innocently>

Thanks for the fdk... and I'm glad you at least love being tortured. <g>

Hi sammie! Sorry to have upset you... don't worry, you'll be pretty happy by part 10, I think. <g> Thanks for the fdk!

Hi Sue!

Thanks for the fdk. smile And slap away, you know Clark's vulnerable right now - just don't slap me! <ducks, just in case>

Hi Jackie!

LOL! And then what would we do for the next 15 parts or so? Ummm... on second thought, don't answer that... cause then we might have to move to the dark side of the boards - LOLS Thanks for the fdk!!!

Hi Laura S! Yes, I'm so glad everyone was able to laugh at my frustration this morning <bg> It's better than rotten fruit, anyway.

I'm so glad you pointed that out... it was one of my favorite parts in this post...

And this was one of my other favorite parts and you quoted it too...

Welcome!

I know there has been a lot of angst. And I know I promised you waff... and I promise that it's still coming. Really. It is. You can trust me. angel-devil

Thank you all! I figured I'd better reply to fdk real quick before I was out of pocket for the weekend. I'll check back in on Sunday night! See you all soon and have wonderful weekends!!!

*blushes* there was no need for a public thank you - I barely did anything, just put in some silly comments here and there and giggle because I got to read this part before everyone else. <g>

Back in Sue's FDK thread for Honeymoon, I mentioned I worked for a cell phone company - well, I actually worked for several different phone companies over the years and your answering machine bit reminded me of that. Back in 1997, I worked for a company that installed phone systems and one of the things I did was to record answering-system messages (eg: "for service in English, please press one" and "To speak to a customer support representative, please press 6") so for a time, I was the voice people don't want to hear. *lol* The weirdest thing was calling one of these companies and having the system answer because that meant I was answering my own call... hehehe! Okies... enough about me. wink

She didn’t really want him to leave like this. She didn’t want him to leave period.
Lois... don't waste your time telling us - or even telling your front door. Go tell HIM that. And hurry!!

Quote
In her anger, Lois had forgotten to tell Clark about the experiments and the other samples in the lab. How could he possibly have understood the validity of what she had done? He didn’t even really know why she had done it.
See, see! If she only had had the chance to tell him that, he might not have over-reacted and he might not be going off to Kansas and... *sighs* They're so dense, these two!!

Quote
Even if he never regained his powers and ended up being just like every other man – he wouldn’t ever be ‘normal’.
aaaawwww!!! *hugs Clark* Poor thing! You're more normal than a lot of guys I know. Really, I swear. You're more normal than I am, most of the time, even. Besides, it doesn't matter if you're from Earth or not, Clark... we love you!! I'm not kidding!

Quote
“Yes, it will put my parents’ minds at ease, and it’s so quiet and peaceful on the farm...” He gave her a small smile. “It will be the perfect place for me to rest and take it easy while I recuperate. With the Daily Planet gone and me out of work, there’s nothing to keep me here right now.” Nothing but you, he added silently.

Lois’s breath caught in her chest. There was nothing to keep him here. Not even her. She didn’t let him see how his words had affected her and instead chose to redirect her feelings in a different way. She’d argue with him. “But Perry is working on getting the Planet rebuilt. He’s going to need our help.”
You so have no idea how badly I would like to kick them! Idiots!!!! She wants you, you want her, why don't you just say it. GAH!!!!!

(btw... the best clue that I'm enjoying the story and that it's believable to me is when I get so caught up that I start yelling at the characters. And, trust me, I been yelling at them lots in this part!)

And shooooo!!! for the case of Martha Interruptus. All your stories have multiple cases of interruptus by several supporting cast members.... we're going to have to go and teach them manners pretty soon! They have no right to interfere with the good stuff! *lol*

Quote
Jonathan stepped up and gave her a hug of his own. “You really need to come back and visit us again soon. I promise I won’t wear a dress while you’re there.”
You have no idea how much that cracked me up! I wonder why no one ever brings it up, it's such an amusing little wink to GGGoH. laugh

Quote
For just a moment he had been able to pretend that she felt more for him, for Clark, than just friendship.
She does! And you do too! ...GRRR!!!

...oops, my play date is here. *lol* I mean that literally, it's time for our daily Mario Kart race. And the guys just got here. Gotta go! smile

Yeah you're absolutely right Lois!! Give him a normal goodbye (or say he doesn't have to go!) !!

Clark wanted to cry at the irony. Lois would have never said that she loved him if she had known the ordinary man inside him was Clark.
Isn't there someone here who can talk him out of that!?!

“What were you even doing up?” she scolded him, putting her arms awkwardly around him and trying to help him up.

ooh I love these lines!! laugh really good!!
How can they both be thinking the same thing without saying them out loud? They should think less and talk more!! goofy

Lois grimaced. What bad timing.
hey Lois thought so to wink
what an ending!!! How can Clark still wonna go to Kansas!?

Ahh...DJ. You've posted early. Thank you. laugh

And now for the feedback!

I too loved this part:

Quote
He could feel the warmth of her palm where it lay pressed against his skin and it was sweet torture. Then her thumb pulled against the skin next to his stitches and it *was* torture.
And the allusion to GGGoH. Jonathan in a dress... rotflol

But I think everyone else pretty much already quoted everything else I adored about this part. Well, Laura and Camy already quoted the 'torture' bit too, but I just couldn't resist.

I loved the whole part, DJ! Come back again soon? Please? Thank you in advance. wink

Well, DJ, what separates animals from human beings? According to my colleague and friend, Arnost, there is no difference. No, don't worry, I won't try to prove to you that Arnost is right about that - in fact, I argue with him all the time: Arnost, there is no way you can tell me that animals can do all the things that we humans can do!

[Linked Image]

So what's the main difference between animals and humans, then? In my humble opinion, it's our ability to use complex (spoken) language. (Okay, written language may have done even more to set us apart from the apes and the giraffes, but one thing at a time, you know.) So what good is the use of spoken language, then? Well, how about it offers us endless opportunities to mislead and confuse other people by not telling them what we really think and feel?

Quote
In her anger, Lois had forgotten to tell Clark about the experiments and the other samples in the lab. How could he possibly have understood the validity of what she had done? He didn't even really know why she had done it.
We can always choose to refrain from explaining to others (or even forget to tell others) why we have acted in a surprising or offending manner.

Quote
The doctor hadn't agreed with Clark checking out of the hospital so soon and he had told Clark that he should stick to bed rest for several days.

But the doctor didn't realize that was like asking Superman not to fly. Clark had already lost his powers and was grounded. He couldn't stand the thought of being confined to a bed for several days on top of that. Although if he didn't slow down, he'd probably end up overdoing it. Then he'd feel even worse... if that were possible.
We can always promise others to follow their good advice, and then refuse to do so once the advice-giver is out of sight.

Quote
“Everything looks okay but I should probably wipe it with some peroxide or alcohol just in case I had any germs on my hands. Do you think you could get sick from a human germ?”

What she had said had been innocent enough, but it hurt an already open wound in his heart. “I'm not human, remember?” He sighed. “Don't worry about me. I'm fine.”
We can interpret their spoken concern as contempt.

Quote
Clark was completely speechless as he watched Lois close the distance between them and wrap her arms around him. She hugged him gently and whispered in his ear, “And I'm so glad you're okay.”

Before Clark could recover and have the opportunity to hug her in return, she pulled away from him. He almost reminded her that he wasn't okay. But he knew what she meant. Things could have been so much worse. He was fortunate that he hadn't died inside that Kryptonite cage.

Lois walked back to his couch, wiping under her eyes,
We can choose not to tell our loved one that we love him, and we are so sorry that we have messed up. And we can cry and not explain why we are crying.

Quote
“I don't want to be experimented on like some kind of lab rat. I understand why you did what you did, but that doesn't mean I'm happy about it.”

“But it wouldn't be like that!” she protested. “Dr. Klein is trying to help you...”

“Yeah, and in the process he stands to help himself quite a bit. The first physician to study Superman's biology.” He scowled and turned away from her, a far off look in his eyes. “The way they buy and sell Superman on every street corner, I don't even want to think about what would be for sale if I whore myself out to some doctor for research.”

“But...”

“No, I said! Don't ask me again.”
We can jump to conclusions and then interrupt our would-be loved-ones so they don't get a chance to explain.

Quote
Clark was flabbergasted by her insistence. Was it so hard to understand that he didn't want to be dissected like some frog? That he didn't want to be tested and experimented on? That he didn't want yet another reminder of how different he was?
We can stubbornly insist to misunderstand.

Quote
Lois was startled by his reaction and it halted any further protests that were forming in her mind. He wasn't going to do this – end of discussion, negotiations closed.
We can give in without trying to make our point at all.

Quote
With the Daily Planet gone and me out of work, there's nothing to keep me here right now.” Nothing but you, he added silently.

Lois's breath caught in her chest. There was nothing to keep him here. Not even her.
We can refuse to voice our thoughts and feelings, giving rise to all sorts of misunderstandings.

Quote
She moved her hands lower, kneading the flesh through his shirt as she went. It would be more effective if he didn't have a shirt on, but she was too embarrassed to ask him to take it off.

Clark wished he could get away with taking his shirt off. If her ministrations felt this good fully clothed, he couldn't imagine how it would feel skin on skin. His mind flashed back to her fingertips on his stomach and swallowed unconsciously. No, that probably wouldn't be a good idea.
Like I just said, we can refuse to voice our thoughts and feelings....

Quote
You told me just a few short weeks ago that you didn't share my feelings. Then you told Superman that you'd love him even if he was an ordinary guy – but you didn't love the "ordinary guy'.” He looked away from her sadly and glanced down at his lap. “You already told him that you didn't.”

“Clark, you don't understand, I...”

“No, Lois,” he interrupted, his voice heavy. “I understand perfectly. You were in love with your hero, with Superman. It's just that I don't want that kind of love. Superman isn't who I am. He's a big part of me, but he's just the disguise I use so I can help people and still have a semi-normal life... still be Clark. But you aren't in love with Clark,” he finished sadly.

“Clark, I know what I said, but...”
Umm... did I mention you can interrupt?

Quote
Lois shifted uncomfortably, realizing that it was probably time for her to go but not wanting to. How could Clark leave and go to Kansas? She had worked with him every day for almost a year. The past few weeks without seeing him had been awful.
Did I mention you can refrain from voicing your feelings?

Quote
She tentatively slid her arms around him and held him for a moment. “Don't stay gone too long, okay?” The longer she held him, the more she wanted to continue holding him. Why did he have to leave?
Did I mention you can refrain from expressing your wishes and feelings?

Quote
Standing there with his arms wrapped around her, she wished the moment wouldn't end. His embrace was so strong and sure, yet so tender and caring. She wished she could ask him to stay but that wouldn't be fair, and she wasn't entirely sure he'd stay even if she asked him to. And she didn't want to risk having to face rejection. “Call me tomorrow when you get to Smallville, okay?” she asked instead, pulling away to look up at him.

Clark didn't want to let her go. She felt so right in his arms. Her body was so soft and yielding, pressed against him. He could sense the strength inside of her but could also feel her fragility and uncertainty. For just a moment he had been able to pretend that she felt more for him, for Clark, than just friendship.
Did I mention you can refrain from... uh, you know?

Quote
“Goodbye,” Clark whispered after her and then wondered again why he had decided to go to Kansas.
Oh, and... did I mention that you can stubbornly insist on doing things that are so stupid that you can't even explain to yourself why you are doing them?

[Linked Image]

Congratulations, Lois and Clark! You have just won a diploma for your amazing skill at not communicating!

[Linked Image]

Oh well, but I noticed you hugged, touched and massaged each other, and looked longingly at each other. So, Lois and Clark, if you had been more primitive life forms, not so given to verbal communication, then surely you could not have hidden your love for one another?

[Linked Image]

DJ, please help Lois and Clark regress enough to express their love for each other!

[Linked Image]

(That's not exactly what I meant... maybe they could just take a course in how to express their feelings verbally?)

And that was the end of this chapter? How time flies when you are... eh... talking. Ah well, I'm certainly looking forward to more, DJ! wink

Ann

This was such an awesome chapter! I tried to write a reply yesterday but the boards appeared to be in Chinese...literally! Anyway...

Quote
“Message three:”

“It’s me again. Obviously you aren’t going to talk to me. I just wanted to call back to tell you goodbye. And to tell you that you’re still welcome to use my apartment while I’m gone. It’s going to be sitting empty and there’s no reason for you to waste money on a hotel. I’ll leave a key for you under the mat. I wish... I’m...” There was a sigh and then, “Goodbye, Lois.”
Well, Clark has exhausted all of his options so he is grasping at the onl thing he has left...the one safe topic for him and Lois...<will she stay at his house while he is in Kansas?>
Quote
His mind flashed back to what Lois had said --

‘Kryptonian’... his *alien* biology.

Even if he never regained his powers and ended up being just like every other man – he wouldn’t ever be ‘normal’.
She didn't mean it like that, stupid!

Quote
Clark opened his eyes when he heard a knock at the front door. Probably his parents. “Come in,” he tried to yell, but it came out as more of a strangled moan.

“Clark?”

It was Lois! Clark immediately began trying to pick himself up from the floor when she swung the front door open and came inside. Her eyes went wide when she saw him on the floor on his hands and knees.

“Clark! What happened?” She rushed down the stairs - dropping something on his couch as she passed it - and knelt down beside him.

“I had a little mishap,” he said lamely.

“What were you even doing up?” she scolded him, putting her arms awkwardly around him and trying to help him up.

“I wanted to get some fresh air,” he answered once he was standing again. He let out a surprised gasp when Lois lifted the edge of his shirt and carefully peeled back his bandage, exposing his stitches. “Lois, what are you doing?”

She ignored him and he could feel her soft fingertips gently probing the skin around his wound. “I’m checking to make sure you haven’t popped any stitches.”

Clark pulled away from her. “I’m fine.”

He was sulking and Lois had to bite her tongue so she didn’t say something she’d regret later. “You’re not fine, Clark. I came in and found you on the floor, holding your side in pain. Now let me look.”
Okay, lunkhead...Lois is trying to tell you, AGAIN, how much she cares for you. Now you're being the obstinant one.

Quote
This was your fault, her mind rebuked her. Her heart twinged with guilt and she kept her eyes on his side, unable to look him in the face. “Everything looks okay but I should probably wipe it with some peroxide or alcohol just in case I had any germs on my hands. Do you think you could get sick from a human germ?”

What she had said had been innocent enough, but it hurt an already open wound in his heart. “I’m not human, remember?” He sighed. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.”

“But I do worry about you, Clark,” she laid one hand on his arm. “You’ve got to be more careful. You don’t want to have to go back to the hospital because you’re bleeding from trying to do too much. Who knows what problems that would cause?”

“Don’t worry, Lois. I won’t be your problem after today,” he said sullenly, turning away from her.

She hadn’t come here to fight but she couldn’t stand his petulant attitude, as if he didn’t think she cared. “But you *are* my problem, Clark. This was my fault.”

Clark turned to look at her and was surprised to see the emotion in her face. It softened him and he sighed quietly, “No, it wasn’t.”
Now Clark has turned his hurt around and is trying to pour salt into Lois's wound. But Lois is moving past it and relaying that she is going to care for him no matter what. I'm really proud of Lois here!

Why didn't Clark just take a chance and tell Lois that she could keep him in Metropolis and why didn't Lois tell him that she needs him there. Did Clark even notice the pained look on Lois's face?
Quote
“No, Clark, you don’t need to get up,” she protested.

“Yes, I do.” When she got close enough he enclosed her in his arms. “Otherwise I couldn’t do this.”

“Oh.” She tentatively slid her arms around him and held him for a moment. “Don’t stay gone too long, okay?” The longer she held him, the more she wanted to continue holding him. Why did he have to leave?
In spite of what they say, their unspoken language says differently.

“Goodbye,” Clark whispered after her and then wondered again why he had decided to go to Kansas.
So, will Clark go to Kansas or wil he stay in Metropolis where he needs to be so that Lois can take care of him?

Hurry back! This story is fabulous!

*blushes* there was no need for a public thank you - I barely did anything, just put in some silly comments here and there and giggle because I got to read this part before everyone else. <g>
Hah! That is so not true. But I'm glad you feel that way, Lara. I would hate it if my betas felt like reading the story was a drudgery. laugh Thanks!

YOU were a "press one" voice? How cool is that? And yeah, that would be a little weird to have yourself answering yourself. Hee hee.

aaaawwww!!! *hugs Clark* Poor thing! You're more normal than a lot of guys I know. Really, I swear. You're more normal than I am, most of the time,
LOL!!!

we're going to have to go and teach them manners pretty soon! They have no right to interfere with the good stuff! *lol*
<snort> Don't worry, you're getting ready to read a part with NO interruptus. <g>

Hee hee - I'm so glad you found what Jonathan said to be funny. <g> That part in GGGoH always cracked me up. Thanks for the fdk, Lara! ........

P.S. - You play Mario Kart too? OMG - I haven't played it in a few years because I don't have any Nintendo machines right now (XBOX) but back a few years ago... the marathons and battles I would have playing MK with friends... way too much fun! I hope you won! I was always Princess Peach <snort> and hubby was always Wario. <g> I tried my best to shrink him with a lightening bolt whenever he was flying through the air on a jump - too fun. <g> Okay, back to fdk...

Hi Vonceil! Awwww <sniffle> Thanks, I'm glad you thought it was wonderful, despite the tears. I promise waff is coming... in about 3 parts, I believe. <g>

Hi Camy! Hee hee. Yeah, I mean, who wouldn't want to stay in Clark's apartment? Hmmm?

ooh I love these lines!! really good!!
Ooooh, thanks. I'm always excited when someone picks out a line that I happened to like myself. <g>

Thanks for the fdk Camy! Glad you enjoyed it.

Hi Anna! Welcome. <g> Hee hee. 2 of my favorites - the torture line and Jonathan teasing about being in a dress - glad you liked them. <g> Thank you! I'm so glad you loved the whole part. I'm hoping to post part 8 on either Tuesday or Wednesday. I'm waiting for one beta back on it. <g>

Hi Ann! OMG!!! Those cartoons and pictures were a riot! I LOVED them! <hugs> I agree with you on one major difference separating us from animals... that being complex communication. And especially in a relationship, communication is sooooooo important - if you want to get anywhere at all... hopefully our favorite pair will learn that soon. <g> And you know the old saying "actions speak louder than words" - hmmmm, maybe that will help a little bit??? <shrugs uncertainly>

LOLSSS! I love that last picture. Yes, Clark, just throw Lois over your shoulder and haul her back to your cave... err... den... err... well someplace. <snort> Thanks for all that fdk, Ann! I'm glad you are looking forward to more. <g> Hang in there... the waff shall start soon

<DJ wonders how long she can continue to dangle that carrot before someone takes it and smacks her upside the head with it -- only 3 more parts - I SWEAR!>

Hi Sheila! Oooooh, thanks for the 'awesome'. <g>

She didn't mean it like that, stupid!

What a great part!

I have to confess that I read part one when it was brand-spanking new, and then promptly forgot that I was reading the story. (I suppose I didn't look at the author.) So yesterday I combed through the boards looking for whatever gems I could find and thought to myself, "I wonder if House of Cards is any good." I felt entirely stupid when I opened the file and started to peruse. dizzy

Anywhoo... Between then and now, I've read/reread all 7 parts. Loving it and can't figure out why I forgot I was reading it.

I'm also looking forward to your next post. (Tomorrow is Tuesday, by the way.)

Yay! Hi Elisabeth! I'm so glad that you "re-discovered" House and are enjoying it. Hee hee.

Okay... I said Tuesday or Wednesday... remember? <g> But...

I'm getting ready to post. I had it done and so I'm posting. Look for it in the next 5 minutes or so.

Thank you!
