You guys really have to stop coming up with intriguing titles that capture my interest. I'm supposed to be off getting ready to go out here, Lara. It's just so unfair of you to distract me this way!

This was just...stunning. I adore it. First of all, Clark's thoughts about never having been used to silence in his head was beautifully insightful.

Then, the ominous twist halfway though - silence means death. My heart dropped. Oh oh...this can't be good...

And finally that payoff. Beautiful. Just beautiful. <snuffle>

Thanks for sharing, Lara.

I agree. Wonderfully written, Lara! thumbsup

Is this the prompt challenge that was on 12daysofclois?

β€œIs he dead, Lois?”

β€œNo! But I was really mad and I wanted to kick him between the legs and pull his nose off and put out his eyes with a freshly sharpened pencil and disembowel him with a dull letter opener and strangle him with his own intestines but I stopped myself just in time!”

LabRat said it best and I can't improve upon it.

Great story.

*stares at her screen in disbelief*

Woah! thumbsup

DJ - *giggles* at the "different adjective" comment. I only really mind repetitiveness when I'm doing a beta, you know. *giggles some more*

Nancy - girl, seeing a comment from you totally warms my heart. I'm so happy to see you around. We miss you!!

C. - well, I'm really speechless now... You know how much I value your feedback. Thank you!

Saskia - aww! *passes the kleenex* I'm glad you liked it!

Thanks everyone!!

Oooh! Lara, I loved this! Short things like this are sometimes my favorite. They pack quite a punch in 727 words. Labrat was right, the whole "silence means death" thing was terrifying! My heart dropped as well. But everything was okay in the end! Whew! Thanks for this. smile

Pfffft, and you needed convincing to post this on the boards! wink

Beautiful job, Lara. So beautiful I'm sitting here at nearly 2 in the morning, freezing my butt off (seriously, does this house even have heat?! I might as well be outside.) just to tell you how great is, when I could be in bed, cuddled under my warm blankets! wink

In all seriousness, though, stunning piece. I love it.

Awww!! smile Thank you!!

Elizabeth - thanks! I'm glad you think so!

Lara - (feel like I'm talking to myself here *lol*) a puddle of goo, really? heeee! laugh

Laura - thanks! I like short stories too. Easy and quick to read. smile And, *of course* it ended well. This is me writing the story and there's nothing I like more than a happy ending. smile

Jessi - awww! thank you! And yeah, I needed convincing, for some reason. Go figure, huh? Sorry you're freezing over there. *polar bear hugs*

Thanks again to everyone. I can't tell you how much your feedback means to me. smile

Lara, this is great! I second LabRat's points about how insightful Clark's relationship to sound is, and you can really feel how those dozens of seconds before Lois started to breathe again felt like a lifetime for him.
