You finished it! Yeah!!!

It is sure well done, considering how much criticism you've received along the way. Particularly from me! But you stuck it out and turned your story into a moving tribute to enduring love.

Quote
4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
In your story, Clark and Lois loved each other pretty much like this. Not exactly, of course. As for keeping records of wrongs... well, Lois certainly did it sometimes, and I always did it! And as for hoping... for the longest time I felt as if Lois and Clark did not really hope for a happy ending at all. And yet they couldn't stop loving each other, even though they were not always even aware of it.

I liked your way of resolving parts of the A-plot using flashbacks, instead of "forcing us" to see every little detail of how it all happened. I want to thank you once again for making Alice the pilot who took care of the kryptonite dust. I, too, couldn't get the Amelia Earhart image out of my head! laugh

I really, really liked John's talk with Lois. I have always liked John. He always struck me as a good and honestly caring guy, and I'm very glad that he turned out to be just that, too. I really liked this:

Quote
John smiled. “There's no surprising Lois Lane, is there?” he teased. “No, that's not why I wanted to talk to you. They are so happy they want me to offer Clark a job.”

“Really?” Lois said smiling. “That's great. Clark hasn't been able to write in years before this and I know he really missed it.”

John smiled at her. “You love him, don't you?”

“What?” Lois asked, the question catching her off guard.

“I wanted to talk to you first to make sure you were okay with it, but you didn't even think about yourself. You immediately thought about how Clark would feel. He's a lucky man.”
Yes! John is offering Clark a job, but he wanted to talk to Lois first. And I'm so glad he noticed that Lois thought about what the job would mean to Clark, not what it would mean to her!

This confirms to John what he already knew, or strongly suspected, about Lois's true feelings for Clark (which she may not be fully aware of herself):

Quote
Lois blushed slightly. “It's not what you think, John. We're just friends.”

John laughed. “Like us?” he asked.

“Huh?” Lois asked, not understanding where this is going.

“Clark adores you, Lois. I see the way he looks at you. He's in love with you.”

Lois' blush deepened. “Maybe,” she conceded, “but even so, he knows…”

But John cut her off, “And when I see you look at him, I know that you and I have gone on our last dinner date.”

“What?” Lois asked, startled.

“You love him,” John stated. “It's all over your face when you look at him. I'd probably be all eaten up with jealousy if it wasn't so clear that he understands how special you are.”
I love how John can be so happy for Lois because of the wonderful love that he knows that Lois and Clark feel for one another! mecry What a sweet guy he is!

Quote
“John,” Lois said weakly.

“It's okay, Lois,” he replied quietly. “Clark Kent is a good man. I can't seem to work up any of the righteous indignation I'd like as I like him too much.” Then getting up from his chair, he walked toward the door. “Just one more thing,” he said before he opened the door.

Lois, who was still feeling shell shocked, turned to look at him. “What?” she asked quietly, feeling a little afraid of what was coming.

“You're staying, aren't you?” John asked. “You're not planning to go back to the Daily Planet?”

Lois smiled, feeling better now that the question was one she could answer easily. “No,” she shook her head firmly. “I love it here and I couldn't leave Sammy.”

“Good,” John smiled.
I guess I like it better when Lois and Clark are in Metropolis, but that is really no big deal, after all. And this is most certainly not the first fanfic that has Lois and Clark end up somewhere else than in Metropolis.

Quote
“But, John,” Lois said as he started to walk through the door. When he turned around to look at her she said, “I don't know that Clark wouldn't like to move back to Metropolis. I don't really think he has any desire to live in San Diego, so he probably won't take the job.”

John smiled. “You really don't get it, do you? Clark would do anything for you. If you're committed to staying in San Diego, he's going to be tickled pink to be offered a job here.”
I love it! Yes, ask Clark where he would rather be, in Metropolis or where Lois is, and what will he answer? There is no contest. I love it that John understands this, but Lois doesn't. She doesn't know how special she is to Clark.

But Clark declines the offer of a job?

Quote
“I, uh,…” Clark fumbled for words as Lois approached and she realized she had lingered in John's office a moment too long and missed the offer. Looking up now, she saw Clark's eyes search for hers before he said, “I can't.”

“What?” Lois asked, loudly. Why would Clark turn down the job like that? Even if he hoped to move back to Metropolis, she didn't think it would be so easy for him to turn down the job offer.

“I'm sorry,” Clark said softly before pushing past them to make his way outside.
Why doesn't he want the job?

Quote
“What are you doing?” she demanded when she saw him. “You were offered a job writing again. If you want to go back to Metropolis, that's great and I'm sure you could get a position at the Planet again in a heartbeat. But still, I wouldn't have thought you could say no so easily.”

Clark stared at the sidewalk for a moment and when he raised his eyes to meet hers they were full of pain. “I don't want to work for the Planet,” he said softly.

“Then what do you want?” Lois asked him, her voice softening as she took his hand in hers.

“I want to work here with you,” he said and if he made an attempt to hide the longing in his voice, it failed miserably.
He wants the job here in San Diego with Lois! And yet he turned it down?

Quote
“Lois,” Clark said softly, “I can't do that to you.”

“Do what?” Lois asked, confused.

“I can't stay here. You don't want me…” his voice trailed off as if he could not decide how best to qualify that statement.
Ooohh!!! He thinks that his own mere presence at the paper where Lois works will be unpleasant for her! He turned down the job offer for her sake, because he loves her so much! mecry

Quote
“I…” Lois found herself at a loss for words. “Clark,” she finally said, moving closer to wrap her arms around him. “I want you to be happy. I want you to… I don't know, but I know that I don't want you to turn down this job.”
Thanks for telling him, Lois!

Quote
“Really?” he asked, his voice full of hope.

“Really,” Lois said, moving away slightly to look up at him. “I know having a chance to write again will make you happy. How could I not want that for you after everything you've done for me?”

Surprisingly, Clark's face fell. “Oh,” he said.

“What?” Lois felt confused again.

“Lois, you need to stop thanking me for that. It was nothing and you've more than made up for anything I might have done by forgiving me for all the mistakes I've made.”
Oh, poor Clark! He thinks that Lois wants him to take the job out of a sense of obligation. As if she feels that she somehow owes him the chance to be a reporter again. Clark doesn't want her to be noble for his sake, and be uncomfortable herself just so that he can work by her side as a reporter.

Quote
“Okay, fine,” Lois conceded. “But that's not the only reason I want you to take this job. I liked worked with you again.”

“Really?” Clark asked again, sounding hesitant to believe her.

“Really,” Lois said, smiling at him. She reached out to run a hand through his hair. “It's been fun,” she said, but found her breath hitch when she saw the darkening in Clark's eyes.
But Lois assures him that working with him wouldn't be any sort of sacrifice on her part. And suddenly their bodies "overtake their brains", as it were, and inform them that they very much desire one another! laugh

Quote
She told herself she should step back and put some distance between them, but found herself instead taking a small stop closer so that she could feel Clark's body pressed against hers.

Clark's eyes darkened further, but he took a deep breath, and pushed gently against Lois' waist. “Lois,” he pleaded and Lois could not determine if he was asking her to step away or to reject his gentle push and move closer.

She looked down at his hands on her waist and felt tears come into her eyes. She was weak. There was no other explanation for it. She was weak and John was right. She loved him. She loved Clark Kent. Despite all he had done and all her talk about never being able to move that much past it, she was in love with him.
Yes, finally there is no denying it.

I could quote all of the rest of this fic. But I think I'll just quote the last few lines:

Quote
“Thank you,” he whispered. “Thank you, thank you, thank you,” he said repeatedly between bestowing tiny kisses across her cheeks. But then his lips found hers again, and his mantra of appreciation stopped.
There is something here that reminds me of a drowning man, who has been pulled out of the suffocating water by the woman he loves. He thanks her, over and over, for saving his life. And then, overcome by his love for her, he kisses her. I love it.

Overall the story was well done and an enjoyable read. It was fun watching the awkwardness of Lois and Clark as they had to get used to being together again.

I'm never happy to see Lois with anyone else (unless its me!) but John seemed like an okay guy.

I guess I can almost accept the happy ever after ending, since they are to be expected in this fandom and you did a good job of almos making me believe it. But I still have a bit of trouble with Lois ever really getting past ten years of letting her believe Clark had died. Especially given what a rough time she had for so long.

Still, it was developed well enough to sort of gloss over that betrayel and allow for the happy ending.

An enjoyable read.

Thank you all for the reviews. I have to admit, I was more nervous posting this than nearly all the other parts. I think before now I always thought that if there was something that really didn’t go over well, I could probably find a way to fix it in the next part, but this time there was no going back. So, I’m glad not to open this to see that I had failed to bring this to a reasonable close.

Ann, your picture is exactly how I felt when I finished writing this. I think this is the longest piece of creative writing I’ve worked on since college. Actually, it’s probably the longest piece of writing (fiction or non-fiction) since then, too – I don’t typically write documents more than 30-40 pages for work (and those usually contain a fair amount of graphics) and I don’t recall having to write anything all that long for grad school that wasn’t a group project. I think my husband was surprised when I mentioned finishing it to him – he could not figure out why I thought this was newsworthy.

This was one of the things I was most nervous about. I was sure there would be some (several?) complaints about things that didn’t get shown. But I’m no good at resolving A-plots without things falling flat, so this way of dealing with it worked within my ability. At first, there was actually very little in there, but over time I added more and more detail in the flashbacks in until I felt like there was enough there. It was a bit like taking bitter medicine a bit at a time, so I’m glad it worked.

Typically, I do, too. They just seem to belong there. But I think it’s unrealistic to think that Clark’s pretending to be dead for 10 years had no impact on either of them. And I saw this as a nice impact it had on Lois – it made her somewhat more family oriented. So, moving across the country was not an option for her as she’s too close to Lucy and Sammy. It also makes sense in that (and it’s asking a lot that anyone remembers this) when Lois was talking to Martha she mentions that the first time she started to feel like she had a life that wasn’t nearly defined by Clark’s absence was when she moved to San Diego. Lois may be willing to move past things with Clark, but she doesn’t want to revert to who she used to be.

Tank, I’ll try not to be too offended by this:

Hmmm… I guess I can forgive you. wink

Honestly, I’m sure you are not alone in finding it hard to believe that Lois forgave Clark. For a very long time, the plan was not for Lois to forgive Clark. I thought I’d have a somewhat happy ending where Lois and Clark were friends again, but Lois was with John. But somewhere along the way, Lois insisted that she and John were just friends and then she wouldn't let me put them together. She insisted on ending up with Clark, and we all know how Lois can be when she sets her mind to something. I really had no choice.

While this isn't why Lois made this choice, as someone who flew yesterday from a very chilly New York to a very warm Los Angeles (and in general thinks San Diego is a whole lot nicer than LA), I can completely understand this. If we had family in San Diego, we never would have moved back to the east coast.

Really, really enjoyed the B-plot. For some reasons (ok, not enough time) I had waited until you where almost done, and it was hard to put down when RL came up.

Thanks, Michael! I want to say I'm sorry for distracting you from RL, but I can't do it sincerely. It makes me too pleased to know I did.
