Hearing radio signals is not a normal Superman power as far as I remember.
Might be better to have him listening to the pilots directly or the ATC center near him.

Love the pilots' reactions! Too funny! This Clark seems more comfortable with the media than the show. Now where's Lois to shout out her idea for a name?! Luthor's last comment sounded ominous. I wonder how he's going to "thank" Clark......

Thanks, sarah. Glad you are enjoying this. Hi, d. Radio signals are just a matter of frequency. He can see further into the infrared and ultraviolet and he can hear into the higher ranges of the electromagnetic spectrum. I don't remember anywhere it said he couldn't hear radio frequencies. And he was close to the ATC, the airplane and the MIX tower. Maybe he can't really sort out how he is hearing it. We do know he can hear a dog whistle, which is above the 20kHz of human hearing. Thanks for the feedback. Artemis

Clark did realize he was comfortable with his surreptitious use of his abilities and had some fears about going out in public, but, he reasoned, he had to put those aside to save the Earth. Tee-hee! I love how his next thought is that it's a little pretentious. Very Clark-like. “What did you see?” the co-pilot asked.
“A guy in a blue suit and cape holding up the wing.” The pilot was in apparent shock. It reminds me of that classic bit in the Christopher Reeve movie where the pilot says in a an intense monotone: "Just fly. Don't ask any questions. Just fly." “Hello. I was flying to Metropolis,” he began casually as if it was a regular commute... Tee-hee again! That'll raise some eyebrows! Clark noticed Henderson to the rear and had a moment of panic. ‘I hope he doesn’t recognize me!’ Then he squelched it. He wasn’t acting like Clark, therefore he wasn’t Clark. People see what they are accustomed to seeing. I'm sure that everyone will have the same Facial Recognition Deficiency Disorder that HappyGirl first pointed out. It's a common affliction in the LnC universe. Suddenly, without warning, Lois plowed into a stopped car and the world went dark. Oh no! I sure hope she was wearing her seatbelt! Why do I think dealing with her car wreck will be a job for Superman? “But,” Lex conceded, “All in all it was an astonishing debut. And saved me a bundle of money. Maybe, he should be awarded just recompense.” Oh, this does sound ominous! It's one of those phrases which could be interpreted so many different ways. Really looking forward to the next part!

Hi lcfan: Yeah, people need to defuse the seemingly impossible with a little humor. I think this Clark is more comfortable being on the receiving end of the media attention due to his FBI experience, brief though it has been. Hi Iolanthe: It reminds me of that classic bit in the Christopher Reeve movie where the pilot says in a an intense monotone: "Just fly. Don't ask any questions. Just fly." Good. It was an out and out tribute to the movie, as was the whole airplane rescue. I thought, why not go back to the classics. It was really that movie that set me on the Superman/Clark fascination. Yes, Superman gets named soon. Artemis

For situational awareness, he tuned his hearing to the aviation band, 118 to 137 MHz, and followed the chatter of air traffic control centers and responding aircraft. Lois could barely see through the driving rain, but she determinedly pushed on and could see the lights of the airport in the distance. Suddenly, without warning, she plowed into a stopped car and the world went dark. So, her Cheep isn’t the major car wreck. She’s just one of the many drivers caught in the massive pile-up afterwards. And she’s still going to give Superman his first coronary. Lex Luthor had been alerted that one of his aircraft was in trouble. Normally, he didn’t care about the daily workings of his airline, but this one had some special cargo from Denver designated for some of his clandestine activities. That will teach him about shipping his personal stuff on the less-maintained parts of his fleet. “Maybe this fellow could be useful to me, depending on how much about modern society he doesn’t know. Have you ever seen “Short-circuited 2”? “But,” he conceded, “All in all it was an astonishing debut. And saved me a bundle of money. Maybe, he should be awarded just recompense.” Maybe a ring with a glow-in-the-night stone? Looking forward to part 5, a.k.a the one where Superman rescues Lois. Merry Christmas, Artemis! Michael

Thanks for the feedback, Michael and Merry Christmas. Edit, since it’s being discussed in the thread anyway: Sound isn’t just a different frequency spectrum, it’s pressure wave instead of an EM-wave, so if anything, he’d be more likely to see them instead of hear them. And he’d still need to decode the FM-modulation of the signal. Well, I thought it was a pretty cool talent to have. But I've got another solution and will modify the story a bit. Yes, human ears hear with sound waves, but you can also hear by bone conductivity. Some items for the deaf use this technique. My solution will also answer the FM modulation issue. I'm all for making life easier for Clark and getting back to the budding romance. As for the pile-up, Lois is on the tail-end of the massive wreck and a crash is a crash, so she is hurt. A recent massive accident on I-17 south of Phoenix, Az due to sand storms reminded me of that danger. “What, no, I don’t have a pilot’s license.” … “No, I haven’t been flight-tested by the FAA.” … “Hey, I’m not a plane, I’m a person.” Precisely why he wasn't saying what happened. Artemis "It only Herz for a little while."

O.K. New stuff is in bold in the story. I'll change it to regular type later. Artemis

Cool, didn't know about the bones. Figured that they just transmitted the sound waves to the hair cells and that would be it. So, he basically built himself a broadband scanner that would play all the radio signals in range at once? How does he ensure that the speaker isn't just noising out. I guess, the same way he is sorting out the white noise generated by millions of conversations carried on within his hearing range. Michael PS: /whispers/ Hertz with a T in there. The other one's German for heart.

Re the hearing issue; I would have just thought Clark could hear the pilot's / controller's conversation normally same as they would as they either talked or listened through their headsets... like he would if he were to listen in to a phone conversation. Nice story, but I need to pick it up from the beginning rather than at this point so I will go back and reread it from the start. Merry Christmas! Elizabeth

Yep, you're right Michael. It's been too long since I had to write it out. But it kind of works for the saying as "Herz". Yeah, he just sorts it out. Glad you are enjoying it, Elizabeth. Artemis Wow, you can post a png file on folcsite!

As soon as I realized he was going to save a plane, I started having flashbacks to "Don't talk, just fly" moment from the Superman movie. It was fun to see a similar debut. Having it be a Lex plane, and with a "questionable" cargo was inspired. ‘And I need help with a name.’ Well, that's what you get for not having Lois there for your debut. Lois could barely see through the driving rain, but she determinedly pushed on and could see the lights of the airport in the distance. Suddenly, without warning, she plowed into a stopped car and the world went dark. AARGH!!! Bob

Thanks for the feedback, Bob. Yeah, it was awkward not having Lois right there, but I couldn't work it that way for some reason. Oh, just wait until he encounters Nightfall. I have a surprise for you. As I mentioned on an earlier feedback thread, I haven't read your story yet because I don't want to be influenced at this point. Artemis

i just started reading this and am now officially hooked!!! Loved Clark's 'debut' and I love that Lois' dad is his boss. Truly fantastic story and writing, can't wait to read more!
LOIS:I don't like you. MAYSON: Really? Oh god, that is such a relief - I don't like you either. LOIS: That makes me feel so much better
