Call The Midwife by Jennifer Worth. The book that the current PBS series is based on. A memoir of a woman who was a midwife in the East End of the London in the 1950's. Due to a lack of effective contraception, women were constantly pregnant and the midwives were constantly employed. One woman mentioned in the book had had 25 (yes, twenty-five!) children.
