He looked out of the window and saw Clark stopping the bus. And put two and two together later. He wasn't going to say anything because he knew Clark had a reason to keep it a secret. And he must have been hoping Lois didn't get it initially till she got to know Clark well enough to not expose him otherwise he would have had no choice but to run the story once she wrote it up and handed it to him.
