Once, when the steer kicked, Clark grasped the leg and stopped it from reaching her hand.
Love this detail for the great protective moment, of course, but also love the fact that she has no idea (really) how fast or hard that kick can be, so isn't quite capable of clocking Clark adequately here.

“We make a good team,” Lois said.
The hottest team in town, you might say. Such a fun little allusion here!

His reluctance to use the ATV had set him apart from almost every other man she’d known.
Yup. It's so crazy how little things have to be to make a big difference to us.

Not with her heart, obviously.
But perhaps there was no need for secrecy.
I really love her defense mechanisms, and the way you use them. ...because this is a thin line at best, lol. And she doesn't even realize. Great writing!

There was a level of control in being the only person who knew something.
This resonates so hard! Also, very much in the mind of a reporter.

Is there any chance you could fall in love with a simple farmer from Kansas?
Such great individual questions (not one feels like filler), and such a great structure leading up to the last one!

That sounded like a lead-in to the announcement of her departure. Clark held his breath, waiting for the words that would destroy his flimsy and unrealistic hopes.
“I have a question for you, Farm Boy."
Both cruel and poignant that she uses the appellation that had his fall for her just in the moment he thinks he'll lose her. Great emotional juxtaposition there.

Quote
The sense of loss cast shadows over her words.
Gorgeous phrasing.

“But not because of Perry. I left because…”
Almost broke my heart there, Corinna!! To think she nearly left because of Perry.

Quote
And Clark would have missed out on falling in love with Lois.
Jeez, that's a stab to the heart!

She lives in Texas with her third husband.
Yikes. shock That paints such a sad picture. But not every character can be a cycle breaker.

Quote
“You don’t believe him?” Clark asked gently.
“No.” She swallowed down a sob. “My father lies a lot. He also had multiple affairs.”
Such a sad interaction.

The postmark was Smallville.
...can Clark be right? I feel like this is either a plot on Lois or a mistake on Clark. Smallville is, well, small. It's a common enough name, I suppose, but that would be wild to find another person with the same name (outside of family members). And if there was another person with the same name, surely Clark and Martha would know them. ...is the letter from Wells, lol?

Quote
“Not as rough as finding your family and then discovering they bring nothing but heartache.”
Oh, ouch. Damning and painful.

Quote
She had found Clark, probably the best friend she’d ever had.
Such an emotional line! A stranger she's known for a couple of days gets this title. ...and she thinks thatfarming is lonely??

Quote
Silence settled around them. Silence and peace.
This is such a great taste of what their lives could be!

And he was sure he always would be.
