I'm totally with Mercy. I figured he just hadn't noticed and was completely caught off guard by the bullet. Then again, time seems to pass differently when you're reading in parts than it does when you're reading an entire chapter in one sitting, so it's possible that it wouldn't feel that way if I wasn't reading it as a WIP.
