Yay! Part 2 has dropped.
Two words that Clark uses a lot, both in this story and on the show. Part of what makes him so endearing -- That even someone as powerful as he still struggles with his limitations and regrets.
Fine - he could work up a little fight if it meant making up afterward.

How was it that he could hold his breath for nearly an hour,
A minor correction -- somewhere on the show (I don't recall which episode) it was mentioned that he can hold his breath for 20 minutes. That's still a long time, but nowhere near an hour.
I am amazed that I caught that, since I really was drawn into that part of the narrative... You write PG-13 prose exceptionally well.
"No. I was, uh, I was watching baseball." His mind whispered that he had been rounding second and headed for third base.
See! Didn't I promise you action on a couch and some nookie?
