This is Story 1 - 16 chapters. I'm working on Story 2, but progress is slow.

Many thanks to KathyB for being such a great BR.

Rating - G

Many of the characters are not mine. The title is taken from a well-known line in Series 1.

Story is AU.

Wow, I have so many questions. Like why Lois wants to (sorta) find Jack. Why Clark didn't leave Smallville, though I'm thinking the reason is sad frown
Looking forward to more.

Hi Corrina!

I can't believe that I'm seeing you back at posting hyper

I promise to get to it. Right now I'm totally swamped and backlogged but I really do need to spread that FDK around so... Yay!

So good to see you back in the boards. Really missed your stories. This is a very intriguing start. Who is Jack and why is Lois looking for him? What happened to her career? So many questions.

I love how she instantly feels comfortable around Clark, so much so that she falls asleep in his arms.

Looking forward to the next part.

Welcome back to the boards. It has been a number of years since your name appeared here.

Now on to the comments:

Quote
“That’s our farmhouse,” he said. “My mother’s kitchen is behind the left window. She will have seen you stop here. If I don’t take you in for a drink and something to eat, she is going to be really annoyed with me. I’m surprised she isn’t already charging down the hill to find out what is taking so long.”

Farmhouse - Check
Clark - Check
Martha - Check

I do not see or have read any mention of Jonathan Kent. Where is he?

Is this the young street-wise Jack that we all know and love? Since this is an AU story that might not be the case. Is he hiding out in the middle of Kansas for a serious reason or is he part of a story that Lois is working on in order to redeem her career? Lots of questions.

Quote
“It’s home,” Clark said.

“But?” Lois persisted.

“There’s a big world out there.”

Would he move if he could? Would he take the opportunity to experience something different? Did he want to? If he did, what was holding him here?

Much of the story rests on these lines. I have no doubt this fic is going to be epic.

Again, welcome back.

A writer's job is to think of new plots and create characters who stay with you long after the final page has been read. If that mission is accomplished than we have done what we set out to do, which is to entertain and hopefully educate.

Ditto what everyone else has said. I have questions which I’m sure will be answered as the story unfolds.

The story is off to an intriguing start. Lois falling asleep in Clark’s arms was sweet. I can’t wait for the next chapter! I love it already. Thank you!!

Thanks for the feedback!!

Blueowl - Chapter 1 - set up questions. Rest of story - answer them (hopefully)!

Michael - Not sure I can believe it either, Michael. It's been a long time.

Bakasi - Yes, in this AU, Lois does feel comfortable around Clark. Not too much angst.

Morgana - I must be out of practice. I completely forgot about Jack. No, this Jack is not that Jack.

Superjan - Thanks for such a positive reaction, Jan.

Amanda - Hopefully the answers start in Chapter 2. But some will take time.

Songbird - Next chapter is up. All 16 chapters are written and BRed so there shouldn't be too many delays in posting.

WOW! A new Female Hawk fic. You don't know, since you were already gone when I joined the fandom, but you wrote osme of my alltime favorite fics, so I was super-excited when seeing you're back on Lc fics.

And the new on ealready looks very promissing. As per usual with your fics, there is a lot of mystery going on already. So, we're not getting exposition dumps and instead start off right where the characters are now. Which is intriguing. There are, as the others said, so many questions on what's going on with Lois. Why is this Jack (my first thought was also THAT JAck but I guess not), whom she apparently never met, is so important to her/why wants she to meet him? What hapened that essentially destroyed her journalism carreer? Why is she a lot more, ah, open to Clark's presence and less full of prejudices against rural people? What does Clark know about Jack that makes him uncomfortable? And speaking of Clark, what's going on on his end of the story? Why is he still around on the farm despite him clearly feeling a desire to explore the world? I assume it it somehow related to the apparent absence of Jonathan (dead?). So much stuff to look forward. And of course Martha is a keeper as we know her.
I'm excited and will definitely stick around for this one since I never regretted reading any of your fics. Now I'm going on to the next installment.

Up, up and away - to the next fanfic.

BlindPassenger Thanks for your lovely feedback. You asked six questions - four will be answered directly, two should become clearer, even if a little less directly. Thanks for reading!

Hi Corrina!

Again, welcome back!

Quote
The tears Lois Lane had been fighting for over an hour welled up her throat in a knotty lump of pain and disillusionment. She pulled onto the grassy bank and cut her engine. As she slumped against the back of the seat, her restraint dissolved, and anguished sobs racked her body.
Given the lack of clues, this sounds like a TOGoM story. Or an alternate beginning with Lois driving to/through Smallville for some other reason.

Quote
All her tears hadn’t changed a single detail of the triple disaster that had destroyed her life.
hyper

Quote
And worse, her head felt like a bomb had detonated behind her swollen, sandpapered eyes.
I should stop quoting…

Quote
The fields were green-brown, glistening in the early fall sunshine and separated by networks of wire fences.
Yep, Smallville.

Quote
She’d left Metropolis that morning, the day after her world had shattered. She’d flown to Wichita, rented a car, and here she was.
It could be her abortive wedding and Clark and Superman presumed dead. That would make it a triple D.

Quote
And then, for a few short weeks, her life had seemed perfect. It had been a flimsy shell with no real substance, and deep, deep down, she’d known it did nothing to fill the void.
It does sound like the Luthor dating sequence because Lois would be calling a flirt with Clark unfulfilling.

Quote
Until the shell had crumbled, powerless to withstand the onslaught of revelations – three of them, one after the other.
Clark/Superman.
Lex/Boss.
Clark/love?

Quote
“Are you OK, Miss?”

Lois startled at the quiet voice and turned to find a man standing a metre from her window and leaning down to peer into her car.
Quick! Friendly country folk! Get the maze!

Quote
He was about her age, his dark hair was neatly trimmed, he wore glasses, and his clothes instantly announced him as a farmer.
Oh wow, it really is an alternate beginning. I should have gone with my gut with an FHfic.

Umm… hi, Clark wave

Quote
“Are you lost?” he asked.

Yes, she was. Hopelessly. But not in the way he meant. “No.”
Awwwww poor dear!

Quote
“Here,” the man said, offering her a clean, folded, ironed handkerchief, white, with the letters ‘CK’ embroidered in blue on the corner.
Nice one for those who didn’t get the first hint clap

Quote
She dried her eyes and wiped her nose, realising with some surprise how little she cared that she must look like a snivelling blob who lacked sufficient composure to articulate her circumstances.
Awwwww phrasing clap Let’s hope the blob won’t gobble up the farmer.

Quote
Trying to summon a shadow of the real Lois Lane from the debris, she resolved to get away from here as quickly as possible. She turned back to the yokel, words of dismissal forming, and discovered he was watching her with unmistakable concern on his rather good-looking face.
Great work with switching the phrasing to dismissive.

Quote
“That’s our farmhouse,” he said. “My mother’s kitchen is behind the left window. She will have seen you stop here. If I don’t take you in for a drink and something to eat, she is going to be really annoyed with me.
laugh
MARTHA: have you seen the dating scene in Smallville? He better not mess that up.

Quote
. I’m surprised she isn’t already charging down the hill to find out what is taking so long.”
This could be fun if they already had cellphones.

Quote
“No. Thank you,” she said, hoping her clipped tone crushed any possibility of extending this chance meeting.
Yes. Farmer. Dangerous.

Quote
Lois shook his hand but didn’t bother to offer her name.
City Girl. Snowwhite. Future Mrs. Kent. Take your pick.

Quote
“How do you know that?” Lois demanded, telling herself that if he so much as alluded to her unsightly appearance, she would drive away without another word.
Wild eyes. Heart racing at 217ppm. 221ppm. 222bpm. He really needs to calm her down.

Quote
There has to be a reason why you came.
It’s about as far as she could get from the beating heart of civilization and its men.

Quote
Maybe he could. “Do you know if someone called Jack Mackenzie lives near here?”
Waaa?

Quote
“No, here as in on our farm.”
“Jack Mackenzie is here?” Lois squeaked.
Say you didn’t by chance invent a last name for Jack, did you?

Quote
He said he’ll be back tomorrow around lunchtime.”
Been over at the Lang’s, checking out their coin collection?

Quote
Tomorrow? So soon? She wasn’t ready. She wasn’t sure she’d ever be ready.
Fun dichotomy!

Quote
He smiled, and she felt a little trickle of warmth drizzle through the ice layers capped over her heart.
Awwwww

Quote
Not because she could be coerced by soft brown eyes and a pleasant smile.

But because it postponed the need to make any other decisions.
Or all of those above.

Quote
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I haven’t asked your name.”
That’s okay. She didn’t want to tell him anyway.
LOIS: eek Lois… Luthor.

Quote
His eyebrows lifted in surprise. “You are a long way from home.”
Household name?

Quote
“You know who I am?”
Hehehe

Quote
“The local newsagency gets a few copies,” he said. “They come in twice a week.”
Daily news, twice a week laugh
LOIS : I’m in the boondocks.

Quote
“Yes.” He glanced sideways and smiled. “I’ve read a lot of Lois Lane’s stories and been amazed by the depth and quality of her writing.”
Probably thinks they’re serialized fiction. Like Alexandre Dumas’ works.

Quote
“Thanks,” she said without any real warmth.

“You are that Lois Lane, the brilliant reporter?”
LOIS: /imitates giggling schoolgirl/

Quote
She had tarnished that status – probably beyond repair – in the past few days,
He hadn’t gotten those news yet.

Quote
“Yes,” she said, hoping he wouldn’t launch into an in-depth analysis of any of her stories.
Just wait till she learns he’s also an aspiring writer submitting his stories to the local paper.

Quote
“Personal reasons,” she replied.

“He’s not in any trouble?”
Depends. Does he earn enough for the alimony?

Quote
Women? Money? Law? Drugs?
Terrorism. He likes to blow up buildings.

Quote
She took it. Not because she’d appreciated the warmth of his touch. But because it was easier than having to explain a refusal.
Aha. Yes. And?
/jots down notes/

Quote
“Half an hour ago,” Clark replied. “Still no sign of labour.”

Lois looked up from her biscuit and scanned the expressions of both Clark and his mother.
No, Clark did not get their favorite milk cow pregnant himself. That was Dr. Mills.

Quote
Did Clark have a wife? His ring finger was bare. And why couldn’t Martha ask Bess herself?
laugh

Quote
If he did, what was holding him here?
He got a cow and a minotaur on the way.

Quote
“Of course, you could. I’ll cook supper. You can eat, have a bath if you want, and get an early night. Everything will look better in the morning.”
They’ll even supply the guy Lois thought begot the calf on Bessie if she’s so inclined.

Quote
It sounded ridiculously tempting. Staying with these people was out of the question, obviously, but Lois was surprised by how close she was to agreeing to do exactly as Martha suggested.
Yes, stranger danger. They might have her for a savory stew tomorrow evening. Or trade her to the neighbor for use of their ladder. Or something of the sort. You can never be too careful.

Quote
“I couldn’t,” Lois repeated as the first twinges of panic began to stir inside her. It was becoming clear that Clark and his mother were not the sort of people to allow her to flee their home with no firm plan.
She really needs to get a hold of the sheriff.

Quote
She ate the rest of it while Martha and Clark talked about various things that Lois assumed had to do with the farm.
You wash the vegetables and cut them into thin stripes…

Quote
Lois took another sip from her tea. The biscuit had given her a short spurt of energy, but now it felt as if a blanket of exhaustion was smothering her. She was so tired, and her mind – usually so nimble – was suffocating in thick fog.
That’s the tranquilizer Martha added to the tea kicking in.

Quote
She felt the table shift a little and sensed movement around her. Strong arms lifted her and held her against a broad body.
Huh. Clark? Or Jack. The description says ‘Clark’ but would he…?

Quote
But her final reserves of energy were gone. She snuggled closer into his chest and succumbed to the captivating lure of oblivion.
thud this was an unexpected turn of events. So glad you’re back!

Thanks for the FDK, Michael - and the welcome back, too!

Not a TOGOM story - AU.

Quote
Clark/Superman.
Lex/Boss.
Clark/love?

Score = 0/3. Sorry, Michael.

Quote
Say you didn’t by chance invent a last name for Jack, did you?

No. I'm so out of practice, I forgot about that Jack.

Your FDK is always such fun, Michael. Many thanks.

Just started this and I'm hooked already! I've read other stories of yours and so excited to read this one!

Quote
exasperation at her own weakness.
Oh, man, I feel this so acutely. Great description of this whole emotional ride so far!

Quote
Somewhere, deep inside, she felt a gnawing ache for… something. It had been there a long time. It had been easier to ignore in the days when chasing her dreams and building her career had left her too tired to think of anything beyond the next story.
This is another deep cut!

Quote
She hadn’t been able to resist the impulse to run away.
I feel like we fall into the trap of "Lois wouldn't run" a lot, and I love love love that you've just followed her impulses instead for this story. THAT feels SO Lois Lane.

Quote
Lois startled at the quiet voice and turned to find a man standing a metre from her window and leaning down to peer into her car.
Aw, love this start that sets us so specifically in an AU.

Quote
Yes, she was. Hopelessly. But not in the way he meant. “No.”
Ugghhhhhh, this is heart-rending!

Quote
“How can I help?”
Claaaaaarrrkkkkk. I love how simple you made his empathy. It really sounds like him.

Quote
Trying to summon a shadow of the real Lois Lane from the debris...
Love this phrasing here. So evocative.

Quote
“My mother’s kitchen is behind the left window. She will have seen you stop here. If I don’t take you in for a drink and something to eat, she is going to be really annoyed with me. I’m surprised she isn’t already charging down the hill to find out what is taking so long.”
This is such a great descritopn of the Martha dynamic. I love it.

Quote
He brushed his right hand on his shirt and held it towards her.
Such a thoughtful detail!

Quote
But because it postponed the need to make any other decisions.
Delicious reasoning for Lois - it really puts us in her frame of mind.

Quote
She started to walk around the back of the car, but she didn’t release his hand or push away his hold on her hip.
Awwwwwww. Love that you're capturing this so early!

Quote
He glanced sideways and smiled. “I’ve read a lot of Lois Lane’s stories and been amazed by the depth and quality of her writing.”
“Thanks,” she said without any real warmth.
:rotfl: love this interaction!

Quote
Clark shot Lois a ‘told you so’ look, and she couldn’t help the small smile that squeezed out from the haze of her misery.
love

Quote
Except if she did decide she wanted to meet Jack Mackenzie, that decision would lead right back to Clark and his mother.
I like how subtle this little lead-in is. We know (hope!) that all roads lead back to Clark for her. smile

Quote
Clark poured from a brown teapot.
The brown betty here is such a cozy detail!

Quote
“There’s a big world out there.”
Love that you're pulling out this dynamic for him for this story. Such a telling response.

Quote
“We’d like you to stay,” Clark said quietly.
You capture him so well with so little!!!

Excited to read through this one! clap

Hi JadedEvie Thanks for the wonderful feedback.

As I've mentioned elsewhere, this story didn't start with an idea, but a feeling that maybe I could play with a story and see where it went. It did occur to me that I could be re-molding the characters of Lois and Clark to fit them to the circumstances I wanted to write about. It is very encouraging to hear that they still sound (and act) like Lois and Clark. Thanks.

I'm very excited to see you here as well. Welcome back! I'm pleased things have been going so well for you on your dream come true farm!

I love this opening. So mysterious and lots of little details that capture my interest.

I love how you described how her head feels after crying. Mostly because that's how mine does, lol.

I'm also surprised Martha wasn't storming down the hill to see what was wrong. But maybe she was just trusting Clark to lure the unsuspecting stranger into the den of cozy compassion. He did a good job!

I'm definitely looking forward to the rest!
