From Chapter 12...

“See you later,” Clark said, heading towards the barn.

“Sure will.” Lois watched him until he disappeared.

Tonight, she had a date with Clark.

It was supposed to be a way to gauge the reaction of Lana and the town.

It was supposed to mean nothing.

But it didn’t feel like nothing.

It felt like something.

And she couldn’t wait.

Thanks for reading.

I'm glad that there's nothing between Clark and Lana. I think Lois was relieved to find out, too. wink

They have a date! smile1 Okay, so there was some miscommunication, but it's still a date. I'm sure they can get it right. love

Looking forward to the next part. hyper

It's so sad what happened to Lana and Martha and Clark. And thinking about marryingn her seems like a very Clark thing to do. But I'm so glad there's nothing between them. Looking forward to the next chapter

Thank you for another terrific chapter! I’m glad there is nothing going on between Clark and Lana but it’s sad that Martha’s and Maggie’s friendship ended because Martha wanted Clark to only marry for love. She’s just a mother protecting her beloved son.

I’m excited that Lois and Clark are going on a date but I wish Lois thought that it was a real date and not a plan to tamper down expectations that Clark and Lana are going to marry. I can’t wait for the next chapter to see what happens! I love this story! Thank you!

I’m loving this story! And I’m so curious how this resolves in only 5 more chapters…

Interesting chapter full of little background reveals.
Well, ouch. That's a tragic mess. I just assumed Jonathan's critical health condition has been the reason for his death (or at least that seemed to be strongly implied) but this? Damn, that's even worse. And doubly so because had Clark not stayed behind to take care of that distraction, he pbobably would have been able to save his dad and Brett (and WAyne too) from this car crash. Knowing Clark, he has a ridicolous amount of guilt feels, justified or not. Which might also tie-in into his consideration to take careof LEvi and eventually marry Lana. (As in, it's my fault she has no longer a husband a kid no father, so I have to fill in the gap. Not really reasonable but it's Clark so...yeah)
Honestly, I don't think I like MAggie. I get that she wants to keep Lana and LEvi around but essentially dragging two people who are obviously not into each other into a mariage (and not to speak of just about a year after the other guy died) for "egoistic" reasons...yeah not cool. And Clark can still be a male role model for LEvi without being his moms BF/husband. I'm Team Martha on this one.
Also, wondering if Lana, when they are really so close, is aware of Clark's..ahem...super side?
Cause if not, that's *definitely* something that he would have to share before offering to marry her.
Lois "solution" to the issue made me laugh. Well there's some, ah, miscommunication going on but I'm sure they'll figue it out eventually...at some point...maybe.
CLark definitely knows what he wants but is doubtful he can have it (and for not-to-be-denied reasons). Lois, meanwhile, implied one of two things with her "federal disasters/men taste" comment: Either she considers Cark one - or, way more likely, she isn't really there yet to realize the full extent of her feelings for Clark which I think are definitely there, but she also might not be ready again to invest into a romantic attempt after what Claude did just recently.
Also, good to know Lois now knows some of th eMetropolis side of events going on. Now she has to figur eout stuff. HEr being drawn into two different life directions that don't really fit together certainly creates some conflict there that, for whatever way she decides in the end, will need her to make some sacrifices.
So, now we have an LnC date(ish). That should be fun...and a gut punch to the stupid gossipers of Smallville. Looking forward to it.

Andreia Lois always suspected there was nothing between Clark and Lana, but you're right, she was pleased to know for sure.

Bakasi I think it's a very 'Clark thing' to want to do the right thing for everyone else.

Songbird They can't go a 'real' date because they both know Lois is going back to Metropolis. But this got them on a date, without ever admitting it was a date.

Scarlet It won't be resolved in this story. Basically, this story puts the pieces in place. The second story resolves them. Thanks for your feedback, Scarlet.

Nick In the fic, I didn't get into Clark knowing it could have been different if he'd been there, but the great thing about writing for readers who know the characters so well is that there are some things you don't need to explain.

Thanks for your thoughts on Maggie. She has lost more than her only son. The future of the farm is now less clear/shaky. There will be more about her family.

Loved this chapter!

Quote
Figuring it was obvious he hadn’t given a complete answer, Lois waited, restraining her natural inclination to bombard him with questions.
I don't know if I'm more impressed that you justified giving her this amount of patience or having her think that's he's intelligent enough to know this wasn't an answer - just so advanced from the interview techniques we see her employ on the show!

Quote
“She wasn’t my sweetheart. Not then. Not now.”
Love that he's not leaving room for interpretation here! lol I really like 'straightforward Clark.'

Quote
“So much loss,” Clark said in a voice weighed down with sorrow. “Mom and Lana lost their husbands. Wayne and Maggie lost their son. Levi and I lost our dads.”
So tragic. But you phrase this in such a lovely way - the structure of the idea really feels like it compounds the sorrow you describe.

Quote
“If Lana moved, Wayne and Maggie would lose their grandson.”
“Yeah,” Clark said with a long sigh. “And that was about when Maggie started trying to push Lana and me together.”
Oof, this is rough. Such a complicated situation for all the relationships involved!

Quote
“Lana doesn’t want to marry you?”
“We haven’t talked about it. I’ve tried to pretend I’m oblivious. It’s not just Maggie. It seems half the town have us already married off.”
It's a nice detail here that he feels like he can really talk to Lois, but doesn't feel like he can talk to Lana.

Quote
“Mom heard some of the talk, and she is absolutely against me marrying Lana.”
YAY!!! Yay, Martha!! clap

Quote
Lois snorted. “I am not the person to be asking.”
lol This is a brilliant retort here.

Quote
“Worse. I seem to be attracted to terrible men, with absolutely no conscience, who are completely untrustworthy. And even more damning,” she said, trying to smother the resentment from her voice, “is that I don’t seem to be able to learn from the disasters.”
It's that last part that really hurts!

Quote
The alarm bells started to clang, jarring and dissonant. “What?” she said sharply.
Clark took an incredible shot using this opening here. OMG, that man IS brave!

Quote
“Perry?” she squeaked.
I felt exactly this in the last chapter when you listed his name under the story!

Quote
“Now that I’ve experienced a little bit of your life, I can see how… how toxic that is.”
Maybe she's finally learning from those federal disasters. I really love the underlying premise and foundations for this story, where distance offers clarity and kindness helps you heal.

Quote
“If Perry offered you your job back, would you take it?”
Lois chuckled sombrely. “Not a fair question, Farm Boy.”
love

But the price is living a cutthroat, exhausting, lonely, meaningless, empty life in a relentless pressure cooker world. I’m no longer sure I want to pay that price.”
I'm fascinated how this ends. Because if Lois and Clark aren't at the Planet, it seems like it removes the indomitable Lois Lane truth-seeker from Metropolis, and without her, how many crimes go unpunished? And if she's not in Metropolis, I wonder how Superman gets the idea to help, and how he would make that work. It seems like it would be an awfully bleak world to remove the good that they would both do?

Quote
Suddenly, she giggled.
“What?” Clark asked, sounding concerned.
“Did you get the chocolate?”
I love how you write her in these moments!

Quote
Lois had been asleep for over half an hour. Clark had decided three times he would wait ‘just another couple of minutes’, but they were still here.
This is SO CUTE!

Quote
His fear – irrational and unlikely – had been that he would marry Lana and then later meet a woman who was everything he’d ever wanted. Also, there was the more likely possibility of Lana meeting a man she loved yet being stuck in a friendship marriage with Clark.
This is such a deeply thoughtful consideration - it feels so in character!

Quote
If he’d been a normal man, it would be simple. Terrifying, but simple.
Ugh, way to double down on how tragic this feels!

Quote
He yearned to drop a light kiss to her cheek but forced himself to walk away.
“Goodnight, Lois,” he said, very low. Then, “I love you,” even lower.
Back to back, this is heartbreaking.

Quote
“I shut the gate,” Lois informed him.
This is adorable, and so in character.

Quote
She scratched her little hips, and the calf leaned sideways in encouragement. Lois laughed softly. “Daisy,” she said, “you’re wonderful.”
This is SO charming. ...And exactly how you fall in love with animals!

Quote
Lois watched him for a moment, then drifted back to Daisy.
Reading this, you really do get the feeling that she could step in for him for a day, if they were really in a jam, you know? I love that.

Quote
He was unsure whether to sigh or laugh out loud. The laughter won.
He had a date with Lois!
Such a sweet ending!

Looking forward to the next chapter!

Hi Corrina,

Sorry for the little break peep

Quote
Eventually, he said, “Yes… No… And a whole lot of history.”
Like *that’s* gonna comfort the skittish reporter.

Quote
Figuring it was obvious he hadn’t given a complete answer, Lois waited, restraining her natural inclination to bombard him with questions.
Yes, she only dates smart men.

Quote
“How long do you have?” he asked.
Until Perry finds her and sends Jimmy to retrieve her.

Quote
She leaned a little, close enough that she could feel some of his body warmth.
Wonder if he turns up the heat?

Quote
Then, she waited.
She’s good at waiting.

Quote
“I took Lana to the Prom. We were good friends, and for a while, we thought there might be a future together.”
Oooookay?

Quote
“But it didn’t work.” Lois felt his shrug. “I guess Lana is the closest thing I have to a sister. Anything beyond that just didn’t feel right.”
CANON LOIS: See? But when I love him like a brother, it’s the end of the world!

Quote
“She has Levi.”

“Yeah. She married Brett Irig. He is… was the neighbours’ son.”
Aaaaaaaaahhhhh…

Quote
“Yeah. We did a lot together.”
*Must not say it. Must not say it. Must not say it.*

Quote
“Then he married your high school sweetheart.”

“She wasn’t my sweetheart. Not then. Not now.”

Lois had figured as much, but for some reason, it was good to hear Clark say it.
Oh, look, there’s a whole rockslide coming off that mountain in the middle of Kansas.

Quote
. On the way home, a truck went through a stop sign and ploughed into them.”
Oh dear!

Quote
“If Lana moved, Wayne and Maggie would lose their grandson.”

“Yeah,” Clark said with a long sigh. “And that was about when Maggie started trying to push Lana and me together.”
Oh boy.

Quote
“No.” Under the blanket, his hand squeezed hers. “What would you do?”
Well, marrying the billionaire crime lord is out, so… huh

Quote
“Worse. I seem to be attracted to terrible men, with absolutely no conscience, who are completely untrustworthy. And even more damning,” she said, trying to smother the resentment from her voice, “is that I don’t seem to be able to learn from the disasters.”
There there, at least none of them were alien invaders, bent on populating their new world with their offspring.
LOIS: If you put it that way…
CLARK: peep
LOIS: Clark?

Quote
His fingers closed around hers. “I’m so sorry,” he said.
/points at above/
rotflol

Quote
“Anything about Claude… and me?”

“Not in The Daily Planet.”
Only in publications with a slightly more strained relationship with the truth.

Quote
. “I think you could have your job back if you wanted it.”
Awwwww

Quote
“If Perry offered you your job back, would you take it?”

Lois chuckled sombrely. “Not a fair question, Farm Boy.”

“Why not?”

“Because I’m snug and warm in a barn in the middle of the night, watching a cow and her beautiful calf, surrounded by peace, and lured by the sense of tranquillity and… I don’t know… maybe the sense of how good this feels. Right now, I cannot imagine pounding those Metropolis streets in search of a story ever again.”
Awwwww…but eventually, the hunger will return.

Quote
But the price is living a cutthroat, exhausting, lonely, meaningless, empty life in a relentless pressure cooker world. I’m no longer sure I want to pay that price.”
So, what she’s saying is that she wants Clark to keep her company in Metropolis.

Quote
“Because I really don’t want to outstay my welcome.”
Yeah, about that…

Quote
“Did you get the chocolate?”

“Yes, I did.”

“Do you still have some?”

“Yes.”

“Is it in the house?”

“No.” He reached up to the hay behind them. “It’s right here.”

“Perfect,” she said.
He has learned so much in just a few days.

Quote
His fear – irrational and unlikely – had been that he would marry Lana and then later meet a woman who was everything he’d ever wanted.
Yes, very unlikely.

Quote
But what woman would want to be dragged into the complications and weirdness of being married to an alien?
The adventures kind.

Quote
“You fell asleep, Lois,” he whispered. “I’m taking you back to your room.”
Clark!

Quote
“Goodnight, Lois,” he said, very low. Then, “I love you,” even lower.
Awwwwww

Quote
. “What are you two ladies doing?” he said.
One is being adorable and the other is watching a cow.

Quote
“I would sense she was about to move,” he said. “I can tell if she’s shifting weight from one foot to another.”

“You’re quite tuned in to her?”

“Yep.”
Now, does the same also work for reporters dangling over the jaws of death?

Quote
“It’s not right to marry someone I don’t love,” he said. Particularly now that he was hopelessly in love with someone else.
BESS: peep

Quote
“I think they’re expecting a wedding, so I figure a lot will be disappointed.”
Did they specify who should get married?

Quote
“Yes! If we go out to dinner in Smallville, Lana will hear about it. If she doesn’t seem to mind, you’ll know she’s relieved that you’re not wanting to marry her. If she does mind, you’ll know you need to talk to her.”
Yes, but this implies Lois being perceived as more than a sister.

Quote
“And it will dampen down all the expectation of the town. It’s a great idea, Clark.”
It will also provide readers with a date and thus a chance to gush over it.

Quote
He had a date with Lois! But somehow it had turned into a not-real date.
Nah, doncha worry.

Quote
He was unsure whether to sigh or laugh out loud. The laughter won.

He had a date with Lois!
party

I think I can see where the next part is probably headed to! /cuts to asteroid falling towards the Earth/
