Welcome, everyone, to the July 2024 FDK Scavenger Hunt!

The gist of the challenge is to find a fic that involves a certain item or theme which I will mention in just a moment, leave FDK for it, and then report back.

This month is going to be a little bit different. In honor of a certain national holiday over here, this is going to be more like an actual scavenger hunt, so read on for more details.

Rules are as follows:

1. Find a fic that contains at least one item from the scavenger hunt list and leave a comment on it. List is below.

2. Your FDK Post Must include a mention of this scavenger hunt, a genuine comment on the story (this is an FDK Challenge, after all), and a quote from the story which proves that it does contain the necessary item(s).

3. When you have made your post, report back here to let us know.

4. The fanfic can be from anywhere, as long as it's specifically L&CTNAOS. (See Scoring...)

5. Whether the fic is complete or not does not matter. WIPs welcome.

6. If the fic has multiple chapters, you only need to comment on one; preferably the most relevant one.

7. IF and ONLY IF there is nowhere to leave FDK, you may start a thread for it yourself. (See Scoring...)

8. You MAY NOT tag a fic once someone else has tagged it.

9. You MAY NOT tag your own fic. Leaving yourself FDK is just silly.

10. Multiple entries will ONLY be allowed AFTER nine entrants have reported in: This unlocks the free for all.

SCORING:

10 points for being the first one to report back here with a tagged fic.

5 points for being second.

2 points for being third.

1 point for all other entries

10 points for finding the oldest fic (final tally at end of the month)

5 points for finding the most recent fic (post date of most recent part posted by the end of the month)

10 points for Most Obscure Source (Mbs and LnC Archive not eligible)

20 points for having the author reply to your comment

5 points for triggering new FDK posts from others on a comment thread whose last reply was older than one year. (these new posts must be also be posted by deadline for this achievement to count).

5 points for having your own fic tagged. (Only counts if you're, y'know, participating in the challenge.)

10 points for leaving a long FDK post with commentary having more than 3 quotes from the fic.

Items from the scavenger hunt list also have additional point values, see below

Find a fic which contains ANY and AS MANY of the following as you can:
(Please note: The Item Must Actually Appear in the Story, it can't just be discussed, hypothetical, or off-screen.)

Ice Cream - 2 points

Sun-bathing or Tanning - 2 points

Stars - 2 points

Stripes - 2 points

A Character on vacation - 3 points

A Picnic - 3 points

A Swimming Pool - 3 points

A Beach - 5 Points

A Road Trip - 5 Points

Fireworks - 5 points

An Eagle - 5 points

An American Flag - 5 points

A member of the US Military (NOT Bureau 39) - 5 points

A US President (Real or Fictional) - 5 points

The Fourth of July - 10 points

Any US State that was originally one of England's 13 colonies (New Troy will count if the story claims it was a colony) - 10 points
(Pro-tip: If it starts with "New" but doesn't end in "Mexico", it's one of the 13.)

Any of America's founding fathers (Including but not limited to: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, etc.) - 10 points
(Note: A face on money will count if the story identifies who's on the bill or coin. Pictures and stamps also count as long as the depiction is explicit and not just implied.)

The US Constitution - 10 points (Note: A character invoking a specific right listed in it will count as its appearance in the story)

The Declaration of Independence - 10 points

A revolution of some sort - 10 points

Feel free to post any questions here.

Happy 4th of July, and Happy Hunting! smile

This one was harder. I got most of them, but I don’t know if all of them count.

The story is Fictious Persons by DebbieG.

FDK for Part 2 - Comic Book Confidential

Quote
Penny sighed; there was no easy way to do this. “Kara, we haven’t called him, because… because Clark Kent is a fictional character. So is Lois Lane.”
“Kara, I know you believe what you’re telling us about your family and where you’re from. But you need to understand that everyone else believes what I’ve just told you. As far as we know, everyone and everything you’ve mentioned are characters and places from stories. Superman is a character in a comic book, and so are Clark Kent and Lois Lane. Metropolis isn’t a real city—”
In this story Lois and Clark’s daughter finds herself in the real world, where she and her family are comic books characters. She has no idea how she ended up in another world or how to go back home. In the real world she learns that her father is secretely Superman at the same time that her own powers start to manifest. It’s up to Lois and Clark find their daughter and fix things.

Itens:

Quote
At the moment they were little flying ice cream cones. She was trying to keep them away with little success; she and her pajamas were getting splattered. It wasn’t even a good flavor of ice cream: it tasted like cauliflower. Kara hated cauliflower.

Quote
Unfortunately, the day dragged on with no change in Clark’s condition. He went outside and sunbathed a bit, but his powers showed no sign of returning.

Quote
Kara looked up from the copy of People she’d been perusing with Becca Hunter; the President’s daughter had wanted to see which movie stars existed in Kara’s world. Kara had recognized about half of them, but then she hadn’t seen as many movies as Becca, so there might have been more in common. Sophie was trying to peer over her sister’s shoulder.

Quote
Douglas nodded. “It’s a Presidential election year, and the President has stated his support for you, Dr. Jordan, several times. They’ve decided they can use that support against him for the campaign. It’s a good issue for them, because the kind of people to whom this argument appeals cross party lines. There are people of all political stripes who see Kara as an easy solution to their pet problems, if only they get to tell her what to do. And they see you as the primary obstacle to that.”

Quote
The girls were looking at her uncertainly, so she forced a smile onto her face and wrapped an arm around each of them. “Come on, we’re on vacation! Let’s see what kind of things they have to do here.”

Quote
“Oh, Centennial Park,” said Kara. “You can ride horses there, but you have to have your own horse. And there’s a bandshell and concerts. You can bring a picnic and eat while you’re listening. We went this summer.”

Quote
Emily was happy that despite the rarefied surroundings she was able to arrange a reasonable approximation of a normal vacation. Apart from Kara and Caitlin going flying their activities had been mundane: reading books from the library, watching DVDs, walking the trails, swimming in the indoor pool. Kara hadn’t had a swimsuit, but as always the staff was ready with whatever they needed. Emily tried not to rely on that too much as she didn’t want the girls to get used to being waited on. She didn’t think it was healthy.

Quote
On the way home they turned off Route 1 onto Slaughter Beach Road and visited that stretch of the shore. They parked the car and walked along the beach for a while as the sun hung low over the western hills. Back in the car, they swung by the marinas and went to see the historic Mispillion Lighthouse.

Quote
She noticed they were a couple of miles from shore. She recalled the marinas they’d visited on their road trip, and thought one of them must have been the man’s point of departure. Her vision found them.

Quote
Had another one of the kids managed to get out somehow? A few had been cutting the assembly and managed to escape once the fireworks started. She turned around and looked down, then blinked.

Quote
Clark shrugged modestly. “Eagle Scout, actually.”

Quote
A woman in uniform stood. “Felicia Mendoza, Lieutenant Colonel, United States Air Force. I’ll be your interface with the military, should you need it.”

Quote
“Ladies and Gentlemen, the President of the United States,” announced Theresa Foley.

Quote
She turned the page. “Oh, this is North Street Seaport. They shoot off fireworks there on the Fourth of July. It’s really hard to get in to see it there, but we get to watch from the top of the Daily Planet building and get a pretty good view.”

Quote
“I don’t remember exactly where Gotham City is.” Kara ran her finger along the New Jersey side of the bay. “Somewhere here, I think, in the middle. But Metropolis,” she said, moving her finger across the bay, “is right here.” She moved her finger in a broad oval incorporating a large swath of central Delaware, including Milford. Penny marveled at the girl’s imagination.

Quote
Mr. Douglas shook his head. “Becca is a bright young lady, but she doesn’t understand. You are not just celebrities. It’s ironic, considering we had a revolution to get rid of a king, but Americans have a fascination with royalty. Sometimes it’s the real thing, like the British royal family, but we have our own, home-grown variety too.

Thanks for the challenge! notworthy

Ultra Woman: Some count and some don't; I'll have to wait until I have more time before giving an itemized run-thru.

I can think of a couple high-scoring fics that I'm surprised not to see yet. :3

My comment on Epilogue.

When Clark was 21, he, Martha, and Jonathan were captured by Trask. He's not identified as either military or Bureau 39. Seven years later, Lois is an agent guarding Clark, and she's also never identified as military, just part of a secret government agency in this AU.

Quote
The countryside slowly became more familiar, calling to him, awakening the person he had once been.
Even after darkness had fallen, he could feel it. There was something about the sounds, the smells, the stars — the very atmosphere — that reached inside him and found affinity there.

Not sure this one counts:
Quote
“I won’t,” Lois said, cutting stripes through his heart. “But where you see weakness, I see strength. Where you see disgrace, I see dignity. Where you see shame, I see courage. Where you see defeat, I see tenacity.”

Quote
“I would love to eat pie now,” Clark said.
Lois beamed. “Would you like whipped cream or ice cream with it?”
“Ice cream?”
Lois took a knife from the drawer and handed it to Clark. “I’ll get the ice cream; you cut the pie.”
He cut two large pieces and put them into the dishes. Lois added dollops of vanilla ice cream, and they settled at the table.

Quote
“And I accept your offer of three months’ leave,” Lois said. “I’m going to do what I should have done in the first place — I’m going away for a long vacation.”
and
Quote
Scardino hung up his phone. He had to find a way to let Lois know that she could enjoy her vacation … with … whoever the prisoner had been before Trask had invaded his life.

Quote
They reached the belt of sand that stretched in both directions. A few people were scattered on the beach, and a couple of hardy surfers were riding the waves.

Quote
He had been driving the Jeep since they’d left the diner after breakfast.

As each mile had passed, she’d been conscious of her rising impatience. Driving steadily west to Kansas was too slow. Too restrictive.

A multi-day road trip had seemed like the ideal solution when she had assumed Clark would need much longer to settle into their relationship. Information — getting it and protecting it — had been the principal currency for most of her life as an agent, but she hadn’t given much thought to the difficulties of being evasive with someone she loved.

Not sure this one counts:
Quote
Her responding smile set off fireworks in his heart. She put her small soft hand into his and tightened her grip as she lowered herself onto the mattress. Her hand slid from his grasp, and she collected the remains of their lunch.

Quote
“Where are we?” he asked.
“Pennsylvania,” Lois replied. “Just short of the West Virginia border.”

This man isn't further identified as military, although I assumed he was from the context.
Quote
A man in a smart military uniform approached them. “Two passengers?” he said.
Eric shook Evan’s hand again. “Look after her,” he muttered.

“My name is Anthony,” the uniformed man said. “I will be your steward on the flight. Come this way, please.”

Cuidadora - Important question: Does Lois actually take that vacation during Trusting Me Trusting You, or is it just a plan in her head?

Officially, she's on vacation from her job, but it's her excuse to be able to rescue Clark and help reintegrate him into society.

So, while she does take vacation time and leaves her job in Metropolis, going to Kansas and living on the Kent's farm is not probably her idea of a vacation.
