Hi Nan,
We got another Scavenger Hunt on the boards, this time about school:
https://www.lcficmbs.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php/topics/300519/fdk-scavenger-hunt-september-2024So, what better story to pick (except for the junior-Kents in the Dagger series) than the start of the Home series?
> Anyone who knows my writing knows that I never go for the unhappy ending, so I can reassure you on that point, but if either of the other ideas bothers you, don't read the story. It is never my intention to upset anyone.
I read this the first time so long ago and it sure also helped with the *eep* factor regarding poor Lori!
> Lori glanced nervously to her right and left as she hurried along.
You do creepy so well!
> the fact that their neighbors seemed to be perpetually bringing in guys and -- well, Lori would rather not imagine what she thought she heard going on through the thin walls of the dorm rooms.
Well, I would assume it’s in-depth studying for the upcoming biology exam on human reproduction?
> In any case, studying was pretty close to impossible, so she had formed the habit of going to the library and staying until it closed.
I’m quoting this as one of the indications about Lori being a student in this tory to mark the story as prescribed by our task master.
> The distance to the dorm rooms was farther than she cared to walk in the dark that now stretched ahead of her on the path.
You know, thinking about Murder by Earthlight, you did a creepy walk in the dark at the start of the series and at the end. Unless you give us another chapter some day?
> The two girls had escaped alive, but although one had gotten away with only a couple of bruises, the other had been raped and beaten.
Eeep! Nan doesn’t do that to Lois. Nan doesn’t to that to Lois. /goes back to reading/
> When a dark figure emerged from the vegetation onto the path ahead of her it wasn't even a surprise.
Tell that to the character. /hugs self/
> This was it, she knew. If she didn't get away, she would be lucky to escape with only a rape and a beating.
Eeep! Eeeep! Eeeeep!
> A gust of air swirled about her and suddenly he was there; a tall, caped figure in the darkness,
Oh no, it’s one of the stories where Superman has to hide a body!
> It was one of the super-heroes, she realized, the new one who had appeared only two years ago. The one in the old Superman uniform, who looked so much like the pictures of his grandfather, or perhaps his great grandfather, the original Superman who had vanished fifty years ago.
Hi Clark! /waves/
> "Here." One handed, he reached up to detach his cape. "He tore your clothes."
Awwwww…
> Her assailant wasn't so lucky. Superman was holding him by the back of his pants and he dangled awkwardly, his arms flailing in the air.
Super-wedgy for the win!
> Besides, maybe they would fly.
Awwwww
> And I don't care if the Administration doesn't like it, I'm going to write this up for the school paper, tomorrow! They've ignored student safety around here long enough. If it hadn't been for Superman, I'd be dead right now. Others might not be so lucky.
And she’s all fired up!
> She was a twenty year old Journalism major at NTSU. It figured, he thought, shaking his head. He should have known.
Yep.
> Only, how was he to proceed, now?
Ring shopping.
> And then the time he dreaded had come at last. He had lost his beloved wife at the age of 108.
/points at heartstrings being pulled/
> And tomorrow, he would take his resume to the Daily Planet.
You know, considering the next story (which you hadn’t plotted at the time this was written) the resume might have been overkill.
> Anyone who had looked up at that moment wouldn't have believed the sight that greeted his eyes, for he would have seen Superman doing loop-the-loops across the sky. Life was suddenly full of promise once more.
Awwwww
> The End
The Beginning.
Time for a re-read some time in the future. That would be number 4. Or 5. Hmm… I think 4, probably.
