Thanks for the feedback!
Framework4, I never meant to imply that this Clark won't ever form the basis of a utopian society. The point is for Superman to be there to help him get there. I guess I should say that when I said "it would be too difficult for [Clark]" to become Superman that wasn't meant to imply that this Clark is weak, just that there are differences in this world and with this Clark and Lois that meant had Clark tried to do something like become Superman at the same point in time we are used to, it would not have worked out.
However, it is also true that this Clark is a bit more timid than the one we are used to. He won't always be that way - and I actually see that as a central tenant of the story such that once Clark is substantially strong willed enough, there's not much more story to tell. In a similar vein, this Lois is a bit more mean than Lois on the show. These are not large differences, just subtle differences in their personalities, but it leads to some actions being different as well.
I'm not sure this Clark will ever don a masked costume (other than perhaps Superman), but he will become a stronger person, more sure of himself. And I'm not ruling out the masked hero idea.
Elizabeth -
Your version of the story heightens the jealousy that Clark felt for Superman (and essentially for himself) in the original season.
This is one of the interesting things for me about writing this. I wasn't thinking about this aspect when I had the idea, but Clark's feelings for Superman (and Lois' feelings for him) are so much clearer cut for Clark when he is not Superman. This makes things probably a bit less frustrating for him, but it also increases the intensity of his jealousy.
