Then she’d insisted that they needed to talk... and her refusal to react the way he’d wanted - expected - had just triggered something in him. Anger. Rage. A need to wound, the way she’d wounded him.
Oooh! I like this! That emotion triggered in him. And the "refusal to react the way he's wanted" that's... well, that's so un-Clark-like, but it fits. He wants to lash out. His plans didn't go the way he expected, which only served to hurt him worse... and... no kidding that would trigger the rage. (That he doesn’t realize is partially at himself because he's the strongest man in the world, and he can't get her heart to budge one inch.
