Wow, You are doing very well in showing us a Clark who is being an idiot at the same time making it seem reasonable to Clark.
Thank you, Patrick, and to everyone else who felt the same way. This is exactly what I was hoping to do - to show Clark making a decision that we, as omniscient outsiders looking in, might not agree with, but one which he has rationalized to the point that it makes sense to him. I do hope he's still a sympathetic character, even in his lunkheadedness
I also love the way you are developing Constance's character--similar to the way that so many other stories have fleshed out Bill Henderson into a character who's as real as Jimmy or Perry.

I love Constance Hunter - I think she's absolutely one of the high points in WWW - and I've always wished she featured in more fics because I think she has the potential to be a really interesting character. I just couldn't resist using her in this one. She's like the anti-Lois; she's not blinded by or awed by Superman, and instead, she deals with him in a very practical, no-nonsense way. I think this Clark needs that right now, and I think that's why he's turning to her.
The way you describe Martha's hands so clearly reminds me of my grandmother's hands. We spent a lot of time up on the farm when I was growing up and this brought up all sorts of memories.
Oh, thank you for saying this, Vonceil. I was remembering my own grandmother when I wrote it, and I'm glad to know it evoked similar fond memories in others

Ann, I enjoyed your thoughts on Martha very much! I honestly didn't know when I started writing L&C fic how much I liked her or how much I'd have to say about her, but somehow, I wind up weaving her into every story I write and enjoying her immensely each time.
Clark is an adult, so he can choose his own path, but... someone should try to talk some sense into him. (But he is right that his parents will stick by him no matter what.)
Yes, his parents will stick by him no matter what, but Martha (my Martha, anyway) isn't shy about giving him an earful when she thinks he needs it. I think that Clark wasn't
quite honest with himself about why he chose not to confide in his mother that night. This Clark is very good at rationalizing things.
Clark has often been so contemptuous of his Superman persona. I'm glad he is having some small regrets here.
I think it's easier to look fondly on something you don't expect to be bothered with for much longer, and that's probably the key here.
This chapter brought us some wonderful insights into Martha and Constance Hunter. Now I want to see Lois interact with the new, Superman-less Clark! (I can just imagine him squirming and trying to ignore all kinds of cries for help...)
