OK, it is not ideal, but I am still surprised he gave up time to spend with Lois.
True, but he had no idea how long he would actually manage to stay in the tournament. So it would be really hard to make plans with her. And I doubt he would have been able to get into the event hours after it started. He and everyone else in Metropolis would be attempting to.
