From what I've seen of Diana, she has never understood the human race. She grew up on an isolated island, with different views and values and she looks down upon humanity from her high position as a princess and mighty semi-goddess. She can relate to super heroes, because they aren't just ordinary humans, but she can't relate to ordinary people because she is above them. I think this is why she has always called Clark 'Kal'. Kal is not human. Kal doesn't belong to humanity like her. And this is why she wants him to give up 'Clark'. Because Clark is what makes him human. His Clark persona ties him to humanity. Clark has struggles and fails that she can't comprehend. Her mistake is seeing Clark as his weakness, while this is his strength. He just can be Earth's hero because he understands and relates to Earth's people. Without this connection he would be a powerful dictator, even if his intentions were good.

I don't follow the New 52 (and hope that it burns in hell) devil but from what I've heard Diana is still her superiority-complex-self.

In an aside, Diana is an Amazon. They abhor men and don't even allow their unholy presence in their island. This is why I can't see Diana in a healthy relationship with any man, super or not. She wouldn't subject herself to have a relationship with an 'inferior being', as they see men in general.
