This, I believe, has been debunked in recent years as popular myth.
The word definitely has Anglo-Saxon origins, but beyond that, I have no clue.
Oxford dictionary lists no clear etymology, but given that the first recorded written instance of it (as a verb) in 1503 was spelled with two "k"s an "i" and a "t", I'd guess it's a myth after all. Then again... the didn't really spell so well back then.
