Practically speaking, they've never had a huge reason until now to get BFF with each other, in the words of my 13 year old cousin.
BFF?

As for what is different with Clark, I'm thinking that maybe, possibly, it has to do with the fact that he was about to propose to Lana and he still hasn't told her about his powers. I think it is more or less official that Clark used to tell Lana about his powers. When John Byrne revamped the Superman comics in 1987 (or so), he saw to it that Clark told Lana about his powers before he left Smallville to travel the world and learn to be whatever he was going to be. In that alt-Clark episode of LnC, surely Clark had told Lana about his powers way back in Smallville? And in Smallville, not that I ever watch it, surely Clark told Lana about his powers in the beginning of the first season?

Why has Clark not been honest with Lana about his powers, seeing he has grown up with her and wanted to marry her since he was six? There is a skeleton in a wardrobe somewhere here, I think. Or is it just that this Clark is even more pathologically secretive about his powers than he usually is for no particular reason at all?
