As kind of an over all statement... I accept the soul mates canon of L/C, but I'm not sure it exists IRL. I believe that you can truly love more than one person in your life. That if that first true/real love relationship ends - for whatever reason - you *can* truly love someone else afterwards. Or most people anyway. Some people can't or don't.
That said, I believe that Clark truly loves Lana here. *If*, for some reason, the situation were reversed and he'd married Lana - his old friend from high school - to save her from a mad man, while in love with Lois, what would their/your reactions be? If literally, just about all that changed was the females.
Would there be more understanding about wanting to make love - just once? About the 'as long as you're discreet' thing? About honoring his vow, even though his heart doesn't want to?
That said, I think it's probably still a fairly immature love - it needs to grow and all that - and it would have [still will?] over time.

On the advice of my BR /waves to Beth/, I'm going to simply mmm hmmm to most thoughts about what makes this Clark's history different.
Michael - See above. Given the absolute turmoil his life has been in, is that enough for now? Keeping the vow for the vow's sake rather than Lois'? At least for the moment? And will Lois call him on that?
AnKS - I think Joe really is what he appears - a teenage high school jock, who is growing up and starting to think more seriously - about relationships in particular. I think you've got Clark right on here.
Natascha - do you really think I'm going to tell you who the father is?
Clark never mentioned 5 years, btw.
Andreia - have I mentioned you rock? Seriously. You amaze me. Oh, wait, fdk... Yeah, Stupid!Clark about sums it up... As for the not telling Lois thing, I don't know that she'd really go for that - it might sound good in the moment but later...
Lara - /whistles tunelessly and refuses to respond to comment about Clark's history or Lana's use of red-K lined... er, flavored lipgloss. As for Clark floating in his sleep... I've seen that treated so many different ways - I don't think there's any *one* answer to that one...
